It's a song of America. My ancestors mined coal in Kentucky for generations until my father moved to Ohio to work in a steel mill. I didn't want any of that. I went into the Navy.
When I was 5 years old I fell in love with him and will love him till I die. When he had his TV show I refused to miss it. The day he passed I was listening to one of his Gospel albums on my way home from work and when it ended the radio came and announced that he had just passed. He was such a special person!!
... I SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THIS SONG 🎵 LOUD AND CLEAR AT THAT SWEAT SHOP THEY CALL AMAZON. JEFF BEZOS CAN PAY FOR ALL OF YOUR RENT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, AND STILL BE RICH! THINK ABOUT IT.
This song is a classic, Its about the hard working man & woman that can't even afford to die because the system owns him/her.. nothing much has changed these days because your soul is locked to a system of money, and Saint Peter can't call because you will leave your loved ones in financial debt if you pass on!
History if not learned is repeated. Theres a reason most people havent heard this song. Thankfully had a us history teacher play this song with context when we learned about the scumbag millionaires of the early 1900s profiting off of serverly underpaid laborors
My great grandfather on my mother's father's side was a coal miner in West Virginia. But unfortunately, he died in a coal mining accident two months before my mother's father was born. So in short, my grandfather on my mom's side never knew his father. But fun fact, I actually knew his mother. She was the only one of my great grandparents I ever met. But, she died a couple of months after I moved to Montana for a few years. Also, both of my grandfathers died at some point. One died of bladder cancer and the other died of a combination of old age and Covid-19. But, at least I still have my grandma. The elders in my family sure have it rough.😓
There was a PBS show about building New York City reservoirs and taking land from the communities in Ulster County (near the Catskill Mountains). Apparently, the local business all wanted it to happen because it would bring more customers to these towns when the project was in motion. Well, the construction companies paid their workers in script so they had to shop at the company store. Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.
I first heard this song on a few old cassettes my grandmother had mainly the cassette tape Tennessee Ernie Ford greatest hits and I was like a year or two ago
I love the fact that we’re not only living in the same shit hole circumstances but it’s WORSE!! With the added benefit of mutually assured greed with mega corporations that have the same/greater power as politicians. Hell they are the political system. Everyone’s bought on both sides of the political aisle, they give us just enough so we don’t die while killing us to rely on the soul sucking healthcare system. You own nothing, and are told to be happy when you can’t even afford to die. But hey, at least I can take my mind off of this with the latest marvel disney Star Wars frozen live action remake whose workers that are forced to make this schlock are being fairly compensated and not overworked! 😀
I was born in 1970 so I don't remember a lot of songs (from the 70's) but I do remember this, By The Rivers of Babylon, North to Alaska & Sweet City Woman.

Tennessee Ernie Ford actually covered this song. The original was by Merle Travis.

Тоже не плохо, но Герберт Рид, на мой взгляд, все же, лучший исполнитель.
