This is a video shot during a survey of the SW Sunk swatchway in the middle of the Thames Estuary showing the tide rip caused by the flood tide of the Barrow Deep squeezing the flood tide through the swatchway. All this on a windless day. Please ignore the date on the video on the corner. I had not reset it on the camera: it was taken on 27th May, 2021

Apologies for the delay. I was on a plane most of today: Yes, the front buttons are backlit. Brief press of the power on/off button brings up the screen and brightness adjustments. Keypad brigthtness is not very bright so not easy to see in daylight but show in the dark.

This model is actually better than the controller from Raymarine EV-1, there you must manually confirm that you want to go to the next waypoint, there's no way around it; that is, if you actually make it working in the first place because Raymarine uses deliberately non-standard N2K commands so usual chartplotter will not be able to control it (you only get error messages from the pilot). I have a few questions regarding your KAP866: Does the display and buttons have a backround illumination? If so, can it be set? Does it have N2K or only NMEA0183? Is it waterproof for use on the open deck?
Hi Alan. The display can be adjusted for brilliant and contrast. The buttons do not light but there is sufficient light reflecting from the screen. Adjusting the display gives full night time light. Setting the display is a short press of the Power button. Then select by pressing and rotating the round button. Only 0183, no N2K without a converter. And I regret it is not for open deck.

I have found my previous edition of the 'Crossing the Thames Estuary' book (and associated website) a fantastic resource for sailors in this interesting and challenging area. This latest edition looks to make it even more informative and user friendly. An impressive achievement. Thank you, Roger, for all your hard work and initiative in creating, developing and updating something so useful for us East Coast sailors.
