Beatrix Potters Hill Top - Window conservation project
A famous 18th century window that features in Beatrix Potter’s 1908 book The Tale of Samuel Whiskers has been restored and returned to Hill Top, the author’s farmhouse retreat in the Lake District.
The large, 250-year-old landing window, with its small leaded panes, had fallen into disrepair and needed significant conservation work. Now visitors can see it back at its best.
The window dates back to the late 1700s, when the staircase was added on to the back of the farmhouse. Since then, it has brought daylight into the house and provided its inhabitants and visitors, including Beatrix Potter herself, with views over the village of Near Sawrey.
The significant and much-needed restoration work was made possible by donations from two generous National Trust supporters and was carried out skilfully and carefully by expert craftspeople.

Pipe laying for our new hydro project in the Greenburn Valley

This short clip shows that we've now laid a quarter of the pipe we have on site and as you can see it’s quite an involved process. A trench for the pipe is excavated before the pipes are welded together into 100m sections and carefully lowered into it. this was great when we went here me a Stacey were always in the bunk beds playing his PSP tekken tag tournament lol building fences and gardens and walls ... base camp was great and we would have lovely fried English breakfasts in mornings at weekend then Graham would sit and play Guitar ... ans James who used to volunteer to take us in town with minibus great place great people and they really do have the best in heart for you ... i would have been a lot more responsive to the treatment if i knew what i know now, id have stayed at Lancaster and tried to give something back to Littledale, as it is, i went straight back to my old stomping ground in Nottz city centre and I'm now 47 and back on methadone daily but i am utilising what they taught me to stay away from street drugs and have managed it since 2014 id love to go back at some point as i did not get the most i could of from it if i went back now id work on relocating and giving back by volunteering after proving myself trustworthy and capable these guys changed my life Thank You LHTC i wish i had of listened to Andy and completed the last 3 months, i did 9 and a half months and it should have been 12, so i let my head have me over at a point where i was really low ... wish i never had of done that
Beatrix Potter give the properties to the National Trust to stop the housing developing.
Beatrix gave me s0 much peace through a difficult childhood.
She ought to be called or address as a Sant.
Beatrice was an extraordinary women. I've fallen in love with her persaonality.
The beauty of that area is breath taking!
Glad that Beatrix had the insight to want to preserve that beautiful countryside. A lot of people don't have the sense to leave beauty alone.
The movie :"Peter Rabbit " has led me there
I love all of you whom are dedicated to the land and home that Beatrix loved and cared for so much.. I had read the lil' white books to my 3 sons when they were little.. A wonderful collection it was and a pleasure to read and see the sweet and delightful drawings of the animals she loved.. Thank you for sharing this.. I love Beatrix Potter.. always will Xo
