This is the position of market justice. Healthcare is a commodity, and your ability to pay will decide if you get care. There are many physicians and clinicians who take this view, but there are also many who would take a social justict view. These doctors might donate their time to help those who do not have a lot of money or work in clinics and hospitals that provide care to many people who live in poverty. The two views currently co-exist within the US healthcare system.

It isn’t a commodity because governments are involved with the distribution of it. It should be an open market service. Calling it a right but having it distributed by government is just another means to control a population. Open free markets will lead to better prices and service. Don’t hide welfare programs in medical programs. Welfare is needed for some of the population, just separate welfare from healthcare.

Joe, great comments. I probably should have used the word "resource" as opposed to a "commodity." The perspective you express demonstrates a good understanding of market justice. The intent of this course is to provide a place to think about the two perspectives, and I can see you are doing just that! I will share that I like the idea of open market competition and supply/demand principles. However, I have found that if I assume that open markets always lead to better prices, I only need to look into some of the recent actions of some pharmaceutical companies to see this is not the case. I agree they need to recoup for research and design, but sometimes their actions seem based on profit. PrEP could be sold for $100/mo and there would be a profit margin, but the price has been placed at $2,000/month. Unfortunately, those born into poverty suffer due to no factors no of their making.

Healthcare is a service provided by another person. Why try to call it anything else? It appears to be twisting the facts.
