    Ssize and weight are the big cons of this lens. Such lenses can be built a lot smaller and lighter (the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM and the Sigma 50mm f1.2 DG DN are examples on how to do this). So I'm waiting for Nikon to redesign it. Until then I'll use the 50mm f1.8 S.

    • @CatherineGuidryEducation

      I could definitely agree with this! I think the reason why I'm *ok* with it is because I"m coming from a huge D3s for over a decade! LOL Using the nikon mirrorless has been so nice!! But yes! I do wish the 50 1.2 was as light weight as the 1.8!

    I have the 85/1.2; absolutely love it. Right now, I'm torn between going for a 50/1.2, or 35/1.8 to complement the 85. Thoughts?

    • @CatherineGuidryEducation
      @CatherineGuidryEducation 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it really depends on what you’re photographing!! If you’re doing portraits or photographing people, I typically lean toward the 50 because it’s more true to life. I also love a lower aperture so my preference has consistently been the 50 1.2! I hope this helps!

    I always bring three cameras to a wedding with digital. I had one camera break down on me at a wedding. Its nice to have a back to the back up. I heard of two stories from other photographers that had two cameras break down on them. Its super rare but why take the chance. The Nikon D200 has the same sensor as the Nikon D3S.

    When you broke your lens/the filter got jammed on, were you using a lens hood at the time? If you were not, do you think that might or might not have impacted the damage (pun intended)

    When you say that 1.8 is small is cause you are not comparing the G and F models... is HUGE for a 50mm f/1.8 and nikon has to improve that fact in lot of new lenses. That said, the 1.8 does the job but the big 1.2 is super sharp and fast. Good comparison

    Hi Cat, thanks a lot. Im wondering about the s 50 1.2 or the s 85 1.2 to Get a similar look of the contact 645 lScanned with frontier like the jose villa ones. Maybe you had the contact 80 lens? My question is regarding crompression and fall of. ( wedding portraits). Thank you.

    • @CatherineGuidryEducation
      @CatherineGuidryEducation 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not too familiar with the 85 1.2 so I cannot speak to it. But I have done a side by side test of the 50 next to the 80 (using an adapter on the Z6ii). The focal length is similar (slightly more zoomed in when the 80 is on my digital body) but the contax does seem to have more compression and slightly more fall off. I will have to do a video comparison at some point showing these results! I actually have only compared the 80 on a digital body and I’m still waiting for the film scans. I’ll make a note to do this video sometime after the film scans come back.

    My conundrum is I have the Trinity, 14-24, 24-70, and the 70-200 f 2.8 lenses. I would like to add the 50 1.2 to my kit but as you state, 2K is a lot of cash. My thought was that I could get away with a 50mm by using the 24-70. I am a general all around photographer of over 55 years, do not work professionally but love the best gear I can and sometimes cannot afford. I receive my Z9 this past February and just love it. I would love to have the 50 1.2 sitting on it but I am having a difficult time justifying the expense. My question to you is, in your opinion can the 24-70 be used successfully as a substitute for a fixed 50 mm lens. Thanks Rick

    • @CatherineGuidryEducation
      @CatherineGuidryEducation 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gosh this is tough. But knowing that you're a fan of the "BEST" gear...the 50 1.2 is incredible. What if you rented it to see if you could justify the cost? I do use my 24-70 very often (I have the original and the new z lens). However, every since purchasing the 50 1.2 I ONLY use the 24-70 when I cannot get the space I need to fit everyone on the frame OR if it's quick paced and I can't risk missing the shot (like a ceremony). It's hard to believe but I use the 50 exclusively for prep on a wedding day, portraits and if I can only choose one lens to take with me for a day out of exploring, it's the 50!

    Nice video. Point of fact: the difference between f1.8 and f1.2 is not 2 stops, it is 1.17 stops or (one and a one sixth). It breaks down to this 1.8 is 2/3 of a stop slower than 1.4 and 1.4 is half a stop slower than 1.2 - thus .67 + .5 = 1.17 or approximately 1 1/6 stops. You mentioned that it was 2 stops in this video and in another I saw of yours so I thought I would mention this.

    While I'm just an enthusiast, I bought a Z 50 f/1.2 S to go along with my adapted Canon EF 85 f/1.2 L II, even though I haven't used a 50mm prime for over four decades. While some pros may not consider the big & heavy 50 f/1.2 S due the reason that the 50 f/1.8 S is so good already. However and as a business owner myself, I often think of competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, horse for courses and each business has its budget, strategic plan and mission statement.

      @@CatherineGuidryEducation I bought a cheap brand of adapter, the ALTSON CEF-NZ back in the early days to explore this option, while the FRINGER EF-NZ/FR-NZ1 seems to be a popular and preferred choice by some Nikonians. I didn't bother to upgrade to a Fringer adapter because mine is compatible with my Canon lenses, such as 85 f/1.2 L II, 28-70 f/2.8 L, 24-105 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/2.8 & f/4 IS, etc., although the AF may not be at its best.

      Yes! Our bags are definitely heavy but it's nice to have that variety!!

    Very impressed that you're using the Nikon D3S in the year 2020! A ten-year-old camera it might be, but the D3 series (D3, D3X and D3S) were all brilliant cameras and they still are. I own a D3 and a D3X. I have considered getting a D3S to complete the line-up! Have you compared the D3S to something more modern? Like a D4S or a D750, or D810 or D850? Does the 12.1MP file size restrict you in any way?

      Yes!! I actually JUST upgraded to the Nikon Z6ii two months ago and I love it!! It’s the first camera I’ve enjoyed better than the D3S since I purchased that camera!

      I have the D3X and D3S. I would take a D3S over a D3.

      Valerie DePeel film has a soft, bright/airy and timeless aesthetic that is different from digital photography. In addition, the Zeiss 80mm lens has a beautiful bokeh, especially when paired with the shallow depth of field from a medium format camera!

      Hi there Cat😊 thank you very much for your video, very resourceful. I would like to know if the d3s is still relevant and if you still use it? And which lens would be you ride or die?
