Diving and collecting wild corals for the aquarium trade Ep1 Dive 1
I am a professional diver working in the commercial coral fishery.
This industry has provided the foundation for science and technology advances in coral reproduction and growth rates in captivity.
It is important for us to continue to be that foundation and find new and innovative ways to advance our understanding of corals in the wild.
My goal is to build a coral farm in the ocean which will reduce my impact and also provide research and documentation to scientists on coral growth rates.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about a topic please leave a comment and I will do my best to respond.

why is it still necessary to collect coral from the wild. i was under the impression that corals were successfully bred/duplicated in captivity nowadays.
I hope you know this is porn to us all. Seriously, seeing these corals in their natural habitat is making me aroused at this point 👍🏻
Love this content dude. You ever collect any acan lords ( micromussa ) ? I hear they're mostly found in murky tidal pools. Love the diversity of different corals in such a small area.
Curious as to the water temp on this dive? Great video!
Corals belong in the sea, not in aquariums.
What about corals propogated in captivity? They are used to aquarium conditions.
This is beautiful. And i do have coral in my reef thank but. I. Think that they belong and must stay in the sea. Imagine if every person would do that. We would. Have no more. Coral reef barrier on earth i guess ??
Please do more!!!!
Really awesome job! Interesting how the flow looks almost non existent while I got mine running as much as I can't without tearing any lps. Super cool to see how they are in the wild. Do you ever bring a blue light just to check out the fluorescence? You seemed to know what it would look like under blues though.
Will those shrimp live in reef tanks? I’m in Pinjarra
Woah you telling me thats not sps coral? Thats crazy
Jesus, leave him alone.
Jesus, don't be so upright.
@@deardanni4248 ? Don't need to handle the snake. We can see it just fine. Did the snake handle him? Humans are so bloody stupid and destructive.
@@garynewton1263 Oooo, random man on the internet gently touched a sea snake spookyyy
@@deardanni4248 I'm not random, I'm a Melburnian, that makes me way more special than you and your not the person who posted this video or handled the snake so why are you attacking my opinions? Best thing for you is to shut the fuck up and stay out of others business. If you'd called me random to my face you'd be face down on the ground requiring massive face surgery.
What an ignorant comment
Awww is so cute
Ayo see a grown one ur balls would invert and turn into a large hole
Do you ever come across Zoanthids? Do they grow in this environment or are they more of a shallow water type? Thank you for the awesome videos! Seeing corals natural environment helps to understand their care in captivity and is something that is seriously lacking in the hobby. I imagine most people expected to see you collecting off a reef that looked like a computer screen saver.
Man it's sad to see how drab our oceans look. They were bursting with vibrant coral not long ago
Thank you!! I hope to see more coral diving videos! I've been looking for them on TH-cam for a while now and happy to see this pop up. I wonder if bringing a portable LED light with you would be helpful to see potential colorations.
Mate this is awesome cheers 🤙🏽
Awesome!
that favia you showed was actually a dipsastraea.
Wish I was back in Australia to be a part of this. Incredible
Thanks for the insight in to collecting. I must admit it's not the reef I was expecting, just goes to show how our ideas are governed by what was are presented by film and mediA
Wow Great content. Love your work. Want to see more of it. Thanks Parkers Reef for the link to this content
Love the vid. Can't wait for more. I can watch this for hours. I came here from Parkers Reef.
That’s incredible !
Ommmgggg they are huggeeee !
Is this Australia ???
Epic vid mate
Thanks mate, awesome!
Hi Jake, Just wondering if you sell direct to the public or take request? Or just sell to retailers. Thanks Corey
Thanks Corey At the moment we are setup wholesale but we will be looking to set up an online store in the near future 😀
@@ReefcandyTV awesome mate loving the videos really interesting to see this side of the hobby. Look forward to you opening to the public for sure
enjoyed the vid . the vis did not look bad for what you were looking for..i also collect but recreational , been doing it over 20 years, keeping marine aquariums and diving go hand in hand.I always wanted to do it as a casual thing as a commercial collector.here on the east coast.but just never did..as its great fun as well as making a few $$ ...Just wondering if you have any vids on collecting fish as well ...? i also have a youtube channel ... and will start doing go pro vids for public viewing in a month or so..I think to build a coral farm in the ocean is a great idea it works over sea,s.. cheers
Thanks Steve Yeah not much better then treasure hunting in the ocean And awesome mate let me know when you do I'll follow along And yeah that's the goal mate just need to get fisheries and the right departments on board
Hey mate, I dive as well and want to collect recreational. Do I have to get a permit ?
I have always wanted to see coral in the wild through a collectors eyes. There so much false information in the hobby about how and wear things grow in the wild. It is also really interesting to see how everything is collected and the quality that is out there. Keep it up even if it’s a bad video I’m sure people will love it
Thanks gianni for your comment, more to come
Awesome and informative video, this is what the hobby needs instead of bullshit advice from local fish shops. Keep up the good work and now Parker’s reef did an interview with you I am sure you channel will get some attention. Best of luck.
I enjoyed this video very much. Thanks
Thanks franklin glad you enjoyed 😊
Looks like dampier bottom. Sign me up for a job. Used to do it in the exmouth gulf 20 years ago on my time off. Unreal how much things have changed in the industry!
Thanks mate It's actually exmouth but very similar to Dampier as you know And awesome to hear, alot has changed that's for sure
@@ReefcandyTV awesome mate plenty of Premo spots with the blue and purple carpet anemones!!! Bloody hell they have sky rocketed! Few spots there with seahorses too! If ya can Pm somehow happy to try point ya into those spots
Lookin forward to your next video. Even if it’s more or less the same
Thanks Ben appreciate the feedback
