Our channel is all about growing food as cheaply as possible and as sustainably as possible. We do not use chemicals or pesticides in our garden and hope to show visitors that it is possible to do so and still get a great harvest. Common sense gardening and protecting the planet for future generations is our mission.

Don't Get Suckered In
มุมมอง 272วันที่ผ่านมา
Vegetable plants are going to go on sale here in FL very soon but we still have around a month of possible frosts. This video talks about when to plant and when the predicted last frost date is in NE Florida. We also show which plants survive a frost and are continuing to produce food for us.
Jack Frost Killed My Plants
มุมมอง 243หลายเดือนก่อน
A light frost killed some plants while others are doing just fine. Walk with me while I show how things are doing after a few light frosts here in NE Florida.
Some Sweet Sweet Potatoes
มุมมอง 1802 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the easiest things to grow down here in the South is sweet potatoes. They pretty much just grow on their own. We cover how to harvest sweet potatoes and how to cure sweet potatoes in this video. Any questions you might have please feel free to ask.
How To Prepare and Plant Garlic
มุมมอง 1962 หลายเดือนก่อน
To vernalize or not to vernalize, that is the question. Vernalization is chilling seeds for a certain time to make them feel as though they have been in the soil for a winter season. In this video I use a couple of different planting methods to set up an experiment to determine what is the best way to prep and plant garlic.
Calm Down and Plant Your November Crops
มุมมอง 9752 หลายเดือนก่อน
I know its been crazy here lately but November is basically the last chance to plant the rest of your Fall/Winter garden, and planting is probably one of the best ways I know to destress in these crazy times. Nothing gives you hope like watching small plants grow up into food producing crops to feed the future.
To TIll or Not to Till That is The Question
มุมมอง 893 หลายเดือนก่อน
No till is all the rage but there are still times that tilling is called for at least in my garden. We discuss this and also show how to plant onions and how to plant garlic. All part of getting our fall and winter garden going this year.
Plantin Collards Radishes and Tatsoi
มุมมอง 883 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have been planting up a storm trying to get my fall garden in now that it has finally cooled off. This one is about planting collards, radishes, and tatsoi but also covers how I plant my fall seeds and a few other random thoughts. Let me know what you think if you have time.
Stop Hoarding and Start Growing
มุมมอง 5134 หลายเดือนก่อน
So flashback to the pandemic era and now we are back to hoarding again. Stop it. Instead of hoarding toilet paper and bottled water what we should all do is start growing what we really need, like fresh produce in our own back yards.
First Day of Summer Walkaround 2024
มุมมอง 2437 หลายเดือนก่อน

What To Plant In May In NE Florida
มุมมอง 2959 หลายเดือนก่อน
The list of what to plant here in May is pretty short. The heat and humidity here in Jacksonville limits us on what will actually grow. I also talk about my potato fail this year and why I think it happened.
What to Plant in March? Why peppers of course.
มุมมอง 1.4K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Its March Garden Madness and time to start getting everything into the garden. I go through what to plant and show how to plant peppers and even have some bonus footage if you stick around to the end.
How do you have gorgeous dark brown soil in NE Florida?!!!!
Happy Anniversary Jim to you and your lovely wife! Keep growing!
Almost got me in the beginning 😂
Yeah this weather always tricks me 🤣
I do know that they can grow soft white around the Macon Georgia area…PLEASE TURN OFF THAT MUSIC FEELS LIKE IM IN A TIME WARP GOING AROUND AND AROUND!!!
Thanks for all the great content! Your channel has been super helpful. Also fun to see how your yard has grown and matured over the years
Glad you like it and yes it has definitely changed over the past 9 years since we bought the house.
2:18 the water container could also be used as a mailbox ^^ if anyone has the balls to put a toilet in front of his house
Lol, yeah pretty sure my association is not gonna love that.
I agree with the fact the world and global changing is happening. I also feel records are not kept long enough to tell us everything. The world has been through this before. Biblically it has told us that. We all should be creating our own sustainability with the environment at the same time though as that will help what has been created. The more we do to feed ourselves the less we do rely upon shipping etc. that makes the big footprint on the environment. Starting plants for ourselves, creating garden's, planting fruit and everything else that each of us eat can put a big dent in the footprint we each leave behind. The issue is to get everyone to understand that as the process takes place to get rid of fossil fuel. We just can't cut fossil fuel off until alternative have been perfected. I grow 50% of veggies we eat and have chickens for eggs. If everyone could get to that point, we could make a big difference on the footprint. Love your content and glad I found your channel.
It was definitely a different winter this year. Luckily I think my only loss will be the 1 bacon avocado and that was my fault for allowing the frost cloth to sag when it got wet and then freeze to the top of the tree. All the other trees will be fine.
Yeah I had an avocado tree die then come back from the root stock. Like you though the cloth cover sagged and looks like it has died again. I will give it till spring to see if it recovers but it does not look good right now.
Cilantro looks like it would be an amazing ground cover too
Well cilantro gets about 2 feet tall so in the spring it does fine but later on might be a bit much. Though I have never tried mowing it.
When I was young we lived in Jacksonville then we moved to paradise ( St. Augustine) Anastasia Island to be exact. The temps are a lot warmer in the winter and a lot cooler in the summer.;That's how it they used to be until all the damn yankees moved down and brought all that hot air with them making our summers brutal. I now live in eastern Manatee County I planted my brassicas in October they are doing great. My tomatoes got zapped Friday, I trimmed the dead parts off and it looks like they will survive. Eat more possum!!
My hubby and I moved up here from several years ago from South Florida. The zones are quite different for sure! Your daughter told us about your channel several years ago. Thank you for the frost warning. Ace in Orange Park has $5 off their fruit trees. Maybe I can purchase and keep them warm inside. I really appreciated your garden tour. My goal is to grow a food forest.
If you are in the Jacksonville area I highly recommend Eat Your Yard Jax. Not sponsored or anything but I get my stuff there and it seems to grow much better than the big box store stuff. Also make sure that the varieties you get are going to be able to take a frost. We regularly get frost and even temps into the 20s.
I believe you just technically heated the air with that heater, If you would have put a heating mat under those seed trays you may have had successfully germinated those seeds especially tomatoes and peppers, I have a greenhouse similar to that indoors I can make the near perfect environment for starting those types of seeds godbless!
Good to know….now, to get my hubby to buy me one of those 😉 greenhouses.
@@cbsifoley 😆 you will get one!
I had a smaller greenhouse before and I have used this method for about 5 years now with decent success. I think they are just slow right now since it was so cold out and I kept it above 40 but not into the 70s so I wouldn't have a huge electric bill. Thank you for your suggestion though.
😂i was just about to go plant and fruit tree shopping. Thanks for the reminder🎉
Now would be the perfect time for fruit trees though. Just not vegetables.
Did you ever find a way to heat your greenhouse that doesn't involve electricity?
I have seen a couple of ideas with candles copper sheeting and a bucket of sand but have not tried them. The original way with a small compost bin did not work as it was too small to heat up. This one has more room so I might try a bigger bin next year. The bottom line though is no I have not.
Those planted ones will never make it they are not mature enough have to grow them in pots for a couple of years before planting in ground that’s how I’ve gotten the best results here in Jacksonville
Yeah to be honest the wife keeps planting them so I keep trying, but I am not sure we will ever get one to grow. We have a couple in pots now and if they survive this year I will possibly pot them up and see how long they live.
fuyu persimmon definitely not native to Florida lol, it has similar climate to east asian countries so it would do well
Yeah Fuyu are not but there are native persimmon trees here in Florida. I am pretty sure the other persimmon I have is a native but wont be sure till it produces fruit. So far we have only had buds that did not develop.
Oh and we have gotten a harvest off of the Fuyu the last 3 years I think but definitely the last two. Very sweet and delicious.
so, where's the update?
Sorry I never updated it cause it never grew. I do talk about it in another video though I can't remember which but the bottom line is baby geese just love to eat baby wheat. Bottom line is none of the plants made it.
@@JimBobsGarden Okay, thx for the reply
Love your videos brother! I'm a fellow Florida gardener down in central florida. I was curious as to how you water any plants that are in ground? I been moving to totes and metal garden beds to save water and I can easily water with my watering can. I tried drip last year but that still cost too much so I just and water from my rain barrels.
Which county in NE Florida are you located in ???
Always awesome to see the variety of the plants you grow.
I am building a compost bin a bit different than this but i just priced out your build and this video is 4 years old , and we are december 2024 the price for the blocks and the rebar now is $169.45 with tax included, if I were to go to HD and build this today! That is up from your price of aprox $110 4 years ago. The one I am building I am using cedar fence pickets , 5 bay system , staining the wood, and I am using plastic pallets I am aprox $ 245.00 I am hoping I have enough stain /sealer to finish the job!
Its like an Easter egg hunt but for potatoes lol
My sweet potato harvest this year was terrible. Worst yet.
Man, hopefully they'll grow better next time!
Ours is in the fridge right now...just waiting.
Very cool. Nothing like having all the garlic you want for the year.
Thank you for the info! Planted lettuce, chard, radish and carrots 2 weeks ago in zone 8b- Alabama.
Hope you don't freeze with this cold snap that is drifting through. Either way all of those should survive a brief frost.
Great advice, gardening can calm the mind 🌱❤️🌿
I remember working for you at HSL40. You have inspired me to try and grow carrots and cabbage.
Wow thats a while back hehe. I gotta say that was some of the best times in my life. I miss the Navy. But I am glad to be a motivator to grow your own food. I just love being able to grab food out of my own back yard that is tasty and heathy and for the most part free.
Which zone are you in?
Sorry for the late response but we are in 9b after the recent change. North side of Jacksonville FL.
thank you . i was just talking to my daughter in law about growing garlic. Oh and im a Navy Brat ,lol. Heard that saying most of my life Thank you for your service
Well thank you. Navy families serve too so thank you as well. Good luck with the garlic I am sure it will grow just fine.
I think this is the channel I’ve been searching for
Welcome aboard then. If you have questions let me know and I will make a video about it if I can.
@ What growing zone are you in? I’m in Alabama 8b.
@@Irie_Soul I am in 9b now but just changed from 9a. I live on the northeast side of Florida in Jacksonville about 11 miles from the ocean.
@JimBobsGarden Such a beautiful place to live but a bit too busy for me, I live in the middle of crop fields with no nearby neighbors 😂.
@@Irie_Soul I grew up that way in mostly rural Kansas. It is a great way to live but we really like it here. We have a big yard and enough trees to screen out most of the other houses. Its almost like our own little bit of nature in a subdivision.
❤❤ love your videos
Thank you very much. If you have questions please ask and I will try to make a video about what answers I have.
Celery, parsley, nettle, ruccola
I have not had any luck with parsley and I do have celery growing in a container. Nettle and ruccola I have no experience with but I will check into. Thank you.
Sir I live in Florida I have to plants in to because of the sand soiled I love your videos
Thank you., and you can change the soil it just takes time and work.
killer intro Jim Bob
Thanks.
Do you deal with dollar weed I'm in clay county and they take over my beds every season
Dollar weed is a PAIN! The only way I have figured out to get rid of it is to keep pulling out the roots as best you can. It is just a fact of life in the same way that bind weed is for those up north.
Happy Halloween!
Good information! I got some seeds and the instructions stated that they had to be stratified for 6 weeks. Now I know I can proceed to plant right away!! 😅
I have never stratified my seeds and have managed to grown it fine but I also have never tried. Maybe they would grow better?
The wild rabbits go crazy for the young sprouts. I have to protect the pigeon pea plants from the constant threat of being killed by the rabbits. So I put chicken wire around each plant. I make a round protective cage using 2' wide chicken wire cut in 6' lengths. Most recently the rabbits have been eating the bark off the mulberry trees, girdling the trunk. So, I will have to wrap the trunks to protect them also. The rabbits also love loquat bark.
Oddly enough we have had no signs of rabbits here by my house. I have seen them in other parts of the neighborhood but that is on the other side with a pond between here and there. I do have a fence around the garden proper to keep the young geese out though.
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks, I will have a new one out beginning of next month.
Half expected to hear what plants we need to grow for use as toilet paper Lol My ears perked up For the struggling 8yr old tree: Would you try a protective cage/cloche made of finer hardware cloth for a while? I'm betting she'd appreciate the help to get solidly upright on her feet so she outrun whoever keeps knocking her back Her trunk could lenghthen higher than the challenger can reach And also bulk up enough on strength & resilience to take their grazing in stride Would love to see it if you haven't already tried it
Definitely poison ivy to replace toilet paper hehe. Jk don't do that. As far as the tree I don't have deer or anything messing with my trees so not a lot of experience. I have heard that there are plants that repel deer. And for the cloche I would probably use chicken wire its cheaper.
Great video. Just planted my persimmon today
@brendalloyd1740 Lol, you should get a sink filter or that filter gallon jug, too much plastic! 😅
What if I hoard all the Dasani water? 👀
I love garlic ❤️
Hey Jim Bob, no follow up on the avocado trees, so I assume they are dead. Avocado trees need a strong root system before putting them in the ground. You shouldn't dig a hole. Just mound them with lots of organic material and put a 50 shade cloth over the top of them about 2 -3 feet over the entire tree. This is just to get them started. Once established. They can take the Florida sun. Cheers!
Watching your videos everything's very nice but you really need mulch on all your beds. That mulch is gonna keep your garden beds moist and I have the scorching sun on the dark soil plus when it's cold and winter time it will keep the warm and protect your plants as well, best wishes to you🙏❤️☮️
We are trying to get rid of dollarweed here in NJ. We dissected our raised beds and then my wife poured salt around the base and also inside close to the wooden sides. It's like a freakin cancer, so hard to stop it. 😮
Hey Bro I’m just north of you and I’m wondering how your grafted avocados ended up doing and where I could purchase them locally Thanks for the videos and the info
I love the winters in north fl. Mixing the greens and carbon seems to work better than layering in my piles.
