เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ธ.ค. 2017
Our channel is all about growing food as cheaply as possible and as sustainably as possible. We do not use chemicals or pesticides in our garden and hope to show visitors that it is possible to do so and still get a great harvest. Common sense gardening and protecting the planet for future generations is our mission.
To TIll or Not to Till That is The Question
No till is all the rage but there are still times that tilling is called for at least in my garden. We discuss this and also show how to plant onions and how to plant garlic. All part of getting our fall and winter garden going this year.

Stop Hoarding and Start Growing
มุมมอง 480หลายเดือนก่อน
So flashback to the pandemic era and now we are back to hoarding again. Stop it. Instead of hoarding toilet paper and bottled water what we should all do is start growing what we really need, like fresh produce in our own back yards.

What To Plant In May In NE Florida
มุมมอง 2876 หลายเดือนก่อน
The list of what to plant here in May is pretty short. The heat and humidity here in Jacksonville limits us on what will actually grow. I also talk about my potato fail this year and why I think it happened.
What to Plant in March? Why peppers of course.

The season is here to start planting your crops for the year. This shows what we are planting and where we got it. Eat Your Yard Jax is one of our go to places to buy plants and trees and their website is eatyouryardjax.org/ if you want to check them out. They have not sponsored this but it really is an excellent place to go.
Corn WIll Not Defeat Me Again
มุมมอง 1208 หลายเดือนก่อน
We have tried so many times to grow corn here and have basically failed every time so far. Each time I have tried to do things a bit differently and this time I am planting it earlier with better soil. Hopefully corn will not defeat me yet again. Sadly my microphone was disconnected from the camera so this video is recorded with the onboard camera mic so the sound sucks for most of the video.
Planting Bare Root Strawberries
มุมมอง 1549 หลายเดือนก่อน
So even though I have always bought potted strawberry plants in the past I thought I would try some bare root strawberries that I found. I show how to plant bare root strawberries and how to separate them and prep them for planting.

Putting Out Tomatoes Cucumbers and Zuchini
killer intro Jim Bob
Do you deal with dollar weed I'm in clay county and they take over my beds every season
Happy Halloween!
Good information! I got some seeds and the instructions stated that they had to be stratified for 6 weeks. Now I know I can proceed to plant right away!! 😅
I have never stratified my seeds and have managed to grown it fine but I also have never tried. Maybe they would grow better?
The wild rabbits go crazy for the young sprouts. I have to protect the pigeon pea plants from the constant threat of being killed by the rabbits. So I put chicken wire around each plant. I make a round protective cage using 2' wide chicken wire cut in 6' lengths. Most recently the rabbits have been eating the bark off the mulberry trees, girdling the trunk. So, I will have to wrap the trunks to protect them also. The rabbits also love loquat bark.
Oddly enough we have had no signs of rabbits here by my house. I have seen them in other parts of the neighborhood but that is on the other side with a pond between here and there. I do have a fence around the garden proper to keep the young geese out though.
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks, I will have a new one out beginning of next month.
Half expected to hear what plants we need to grow for use as toilet paper Lol My ears perked up For the struggling 8yr old tree: Would you try a protective cage/cloche made of finer hardware cloth for a while? I'm betting she'd appreciate the help to get solidly upright on her feet so she outrun whoever keeps knocking her back Her trunk could lenghthen higher than the challenger can reach And also bulk up enough on strength & resilience to take their grazing in stride Would love to see it if you haven't already tried it
Definitely poison ivy to replace toilet paper hehe. Jk don't do that. As far as the tree I don't have deer or anything messing with my trees so not a lot of experience. I have heard that there are plants that repel deer. And for the cloche I would probably use chicken wire its cheaper.
Great video. Just planted my persimmon today
@brendalloyd1740 Lol, you should get a sink filter or that filter gallon jug, too much plastic! 😅
What if I hoard all the Dasani water? 👀
I love garlic ❤️
Hey Jim Bob, no follow up on the avocado trees, so I assume they are dead. Avocado trees need a strong root system before putting them in the ground. You shouldn't dig a hole. Just mound them with lots of organic material and put a 50 shade cloth over the top of them about 2 -3 feet over the entire tree. This is just to get them started. Once established. They can take the Florida sun. Cheers!
Watching your videos everything's very nice but you really need mulch on all your beds. That mulch is gonna keep your garden beds moist and I have the scorching sun on the dark soil plus when it's cold and winter time it will keep the warm and protect your plants as well, best wishes to you🙏❤️☮️
We are trying to get rid of dollarweed here in NJ. We dissected our raised beds and then my wife poured salt around the base and also inside close to the wooden sides. It's like a freakin cancer, so hard to stop it. 😮
Hey Bro I’m just north of you and I’m wondering how your grafted avocados ended up doing and where I could purchase them locally Thanks for the videos and the info
I love the winters in north fl. Mixing the greens and carbon seems to work better than layering in my piles.
Do you guys plant a fall garden as well.
No entendi nada 😂 y no tiene susbtitulos para traducir pero me gusto esa compostera me gusta que es block y se puede desarmar para que las gallinas se entretengan
I’m going the same thing at my back door leads to the drive way. Hope it turns out as good as yours. Thank you 😂

Thank you for posting videos on gardening! I’m on the westside of Jacksonville!
Interesting, complete video Thanks. Only feedback i have is to have a tissue handy😂
Thanks for all the great information Jim Bob! Your channel has become one of my Bibles since starting my garden here in Jacksonville. Can you provide an update on how these little seedlings did? I also planted some from a store-bought papaya… Planted directly in the ground. They had grown to be about 3 inches tall, but have plateaued… Not getting any more growth out of them! I planted them about a month ago, so I am becoming a little discouraged. Would be great to have it reconfirmed that these can succeed as a perennial here in JAX! 🙂
Hi....beetles are destroying my egyptian spinach plants at night...ive been hand picking them but there are so many..do you have any suggestions as to what I can use to keep the beetles away?thanks
Why did you make 3 sections? Are you going to put the same type of stuff in each one ?
How is your tree doing?
It is doing great. Had a bunch of persimmons last year and this year it has produced a bunch as well. The fruit was very tasty and we cant wait for it to ripen again this year. Overall a great investment.
Can't believe it's already summer! Hopefully the heat doesn't kill the plants. 😭
Yeah it has been rough this year and the heat is intense. Overall though most things are doing good. Looking forward to showing it off at some point this summer.
Jim, Bob, thanks for all the great information! Just started gardening in Jax this spring - your channel has been one of my Bibles! I just bought some moringa seeds and am planning on salting them around my yard… It looks like your tree thrived in partial shade -do you think these could survive as an understory tree? Happy to see these can make it through our winters. Thanks again for all the great work you do for the gardening community and the environment !
Cute curious cat lol
I never had poison ivy before until now. What do you do with your clothes gloves and shoes after you have the oil on them. Wouldn't you get the rash if you touch them?
Oh my gosh, what are the red flowers with yellow edges? Blanket flower?I grew some once but couldn't remember what they were.Beautiful. I planted an apricot tree last fall, it's little but got about 100 apricots😊I was so thrilled.Your property is Beautiful.❤Your idea of bed trellis is awesome. Thanks for sharing your video,it was great.
Thanks I am glad you liked it. If you dead head your blanket flowers and throw the heads on the ground they will come back again the next year. You can also dry them in the sun and break them up in the spring to get more.
Looking good Jim Bob. I had such a hard time growing in Se Garden (Stuart). We sold & moved up to upstat SC. I have a decent first year garden going on.
Yeah it can be hard down here due to the sandy soil and the pests. Hope you have a wonderful garden this year and for many years to come.
@@JimBobsGarden Thanks! My homestead is on TH-cam Following Walkers World
We are in jacksonville and our tomatos are doing great but we have them under %50 shade cloth.
Yeah I know I need to get some shade going but thats gonna be a project for later.
How did this turn out Jim? I got two toilets in pulled from a customers house & im trying to figure out what to plant in them
Thank you for reading the list of plants to plant or sow for February. God bless you Maranatha
Like getting worms
@6:40 you said roots don't like air..... so why do gardeners use an aerating tool in the garden ?? I also did some reading, the articles mention plants roots need oxygen to thrive.
What time of year is best to tranfer from pot to ground? Fellow Jacksonvillian here! Lol
I usually end up planting whatever of my store bought ones that end up sprouting. I don't get much from them, but they would have just been compost otherwise. But, they taste so much better than the store bought ones they came from. Even if they are tiny just boil them up whole like new potatoes. Excellent!
Thanks
All permission. Need cold. Why back full with the top of Bermuda you took off? Unfortunately you planted it way too low. The single most important factor in assuring your tree’s health and longevity is planting it at the correct depth in the ground. The roots flaring out from the trunk must be visible at or, better yet, slightly above ground level when the tree is set in the planting hole. This assures that the spreading roots will be close enough to the soil surface to get the oxygen they need. It also assures that soil will not cover the bark of the young trunk, causing it to decay. Setting the tree slightly above ground level will maintain a proper level in the event that it sinks a bit after watering.
One more thing to keep it from coming back. Poison ivy thrives in acidic soil. Eastern PI does not grow in soil above a pH of 8.5. If you mix in pulverized lime with the soil where you rip it out, it's less likely to grow back. Not a solution if you want to grow other acidic soil plants, but helps if it's a border area you have no plans for.
It can definitely put you in the hospital. Before I knew how to spot it, I hit a bunch with a string trimmer. A glob flew up on my neck and face, and the trimmer probably aerosolized it to some extent. The next day my neck and throat became inflamed and I had trouble breathing. Urgent care told me to go to the ER where they put me on high dose steroids. If you inhale burning poison ivy it's even worse. I've heard of people being in the hospital for weeks from that. Be extra careful with your face and neck as the skin is more permeable. Nasty nasty stuff. Now when I remove it I suit up head to toe, double glove and face shield. If it hasn't rained the day before I'll wear an n95 mask. Then I'll pull it out by the roots and bag it before trashing it. Helps to loosen the soil around it with a pitch fork, and pulling it up after a good rain. Get as much of the root system as possible. If you spray it or use goats it'll just grow back the next season. If you leave it be eventually it'll grow berries and birds will eat them and spread it. It's a persistent bugger and needs an equal level of persistence to fully remove for good. After removing, care needs to be taken to clean the residue off your clothes, tools and skin. Outer layer gloves come off to wash later, then clothes right into the wash. Then dispose the under layer gloves. Clean exposed face, neck, ankles and hands/arms with technu or GOJO, or dawn and a wash rag in a pinch. Wipe off with paper towels and shower with an abrasive soap and wash rag. Clean tools by soaking in half water/dish soap or spray it on and let sit for a few minutes. Spray it on shoes. Wipe with a paper towel. Wipe with bleach wipes after dry. It seems like overkill until you have a bad rash that lasts for weeks.
Lol! My cat always jumps into my garden with me, and I have to chase her out😂
where are you in Florida
As pruning stems stimulates growth above ground, pruning roots in transplants has similar effect.
Maybe a spicy sweet potato dish? Since they're all growing in the same area?
Ants don't like coffee grouds
I make at least one pot of coffee every day and always put my grounds and filters in the compost. Never noticed that they were bothered by them. I have not tried putting them directly on the mound however so maybe I will do an experiment in the future. Thanks.
Hi, would it be possible to buy seeds from you? And do you recommend to grow them in small pot until they sprout.
I don't sell seeds or plants since I am not really set up for that. You can get them online on Etsy or various other places. Egyptian spinach is a very good grower and I have planted directly into the ground many times in the past so I don't think it is really necessary.
Thank you so much ! You changed my life .
Lol well that makes me happy. Compost is a wonderful addition to the garden and it does reduce waste by a huge amount. I am glad you liked the video.
