Lifetime Aquarist
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ม.ค. 2013
I aim for very short & simple videos- so you can easily click through videos in a short period of time. I have been an aquarist ever since being placed in charge of my kindergarten classroom aquarium, which has led to a lifetime with aquariums in my home. This channel is not only devoted to aquaria, but to virtually any off-topic subject. I have one of those 'hungry' minds and enjoy a discussion on virtually anything. Me? I'm an amateur historian, crime junky, fascinated by science...my point- I enjoy hearing from aquarists on topics other than just aquaria.

LANE COUNTY AQUARIA FAMILY- EVENT
มุมมอง 3517 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I have reserved the back room of The Nautilus Tropical Fish, located in downtown Springfield, OR. My goal is to hold an occasional swap-meet, something that helps redistribute & keep locally bred items 'local'. Though I am interested in a swap-meet I have been putting out information that this is a club event, being there is a lot of similarities and it's the auction table that seems the true d...
Oregon & Vanlife
มุมมอง 9014 วันที่ผ่านมา
My wife & I recently retired. This spring we purchased a cargo van, named Trex, and started 'vanlife'. It's been sooo fun and I will be posting my adventures more often. I've also noticed how many RV'ers/Vanlife folks want to come for a visit, but that can be challenging if not familiar with the state. We are a large state with vast distances between some destinations. I am located in the heart...

DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 8: Update & Recap
มุมมอง 20121 วันที่ผ่านมา
Sorry how long this video is as I try to keep them short, but I covered a number of different topics here...and rambled a bit. This is just an update on our vases, and what I'm doing with some of the other container cultures.
WHITE WORM CULTURE: How to start
มุมมอง 14221 วันที่ผ่านมา
The purpose of this video is to introduce you to the product I offer, what it looks like and what to do with it after receiving it in the mail. I offer two different products. Both come with cycled medium, in the box shown in the video, but one has a dozen or two worms, and the other having around one-hundred worms. Also, both will come with an unknown number of eggs. Cycled medium is important...
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 7B
มุมมอง 13521 วันที่ผ่านมา
As I explained, when your culture has too many daphnia, it will have a sudden retraction in the population. What should you do? Nothing. Just let it work itself out. It's now been 10 days and our culture is through it and looking normal. Had I cleaned it, made a water change, whatever- I may have only compounded the problem. And keep in mind, in their natural habitats- this is a regular occurre...
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 7: Did it crash?
มุมมอง 193หลายเดือนก่อน
When I went to be last night, that center culture had perfect water quality and was full of daphnia. Today, most of the daphnia have died and the water looks terrible. What should I do? FYI: this is the number 1 reason how/why folks crash an already established culture. For those unfamiliar with daphnia, they may want to change some water, clean something, etc. Me? I'm doing nothing...except ad...

Did you know that keeping a culture in a small container is just as easy as something much larger? Let me share a few thoughts on the matter.
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 5: Are Snails Beneficial
มุมมอง 126หลายเดือนก่อน
I try to keep my videos short & to a point, but I spent more time on this subject as it can be complicated. Are snails beneficial? Depends on the application. Our demo culture has snails; I will use them to help keep the glass clean, and once their population starts to stabilize- I will limit their numbers by squishing some and helping feed the daphnia. By keeping the snail population stable......
ASSASIN SNAIL TREAT: What snack do my assasin snails most like to eat? White worms.
มุมมอง 246หลายเดือนก่อน
I had assassin snails make their way into this tank, but I don't want them there; this is a breeding tank and they eat my fishes eggs. I lured them for capture using their favorite treat- white worms. I have fed in this same location for a few days, so the snails will gather and easier to remove. So if you are looking for something to feed your assassin snails, the thing they most love from my ...
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 4: My biggest tip/secret
มุมมอง 134หลายเดือนก่อน
We see a lot of videos about daphnia mysteriously crashing. It isn't a mystery and is typically related to glucose & calcium. Why do I feed my daphnia fruits & veggies? Why is there an egg-shell in some of these cultures? Again- glucose & calcium. Daphnia use those two to form their shell; as well as many of the organisms in the biome. When glucose & calcium are short, the biome then works agai...
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 3
มุมมอง 1622 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have some special snails in this culture and had one of them crawl out. I added a small piece of tomato to give them something additional to snack on and hopefully keep them content. The daphnia look good. This is only taken the day after daphnia were added to it. They are reproducing as I see a bunch of babies that were born overnight. Every few days I will be adding a small piece of fruit, ...
DAPHNIA CULTURE STATION: Video 2: Experiment: soft vs. hard water conclusion.
มุมมอง 862 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is an experiment is comparing water from the grocery store to verify which the daphnia preferred. Was it the distilled water that is very soft, or the purified water that has been filtered and having the hardness increased to that of average tap water? I had placed a dozed daphnia into each last night without food. Will either of them shock the daphnia into a crash? Which will perish first...

I’m in 🇬🇧 the U.K.. I’m personally disappointed and people might say it’s none of my business. This election will affect the world and I’m worried so it is my business. Trump is a self serving scoundrel irrespective of his promises. I have to congratulate him on an excellent campaign helped in no small way by Elon Musk who bought Twitter and used it as a platform to peddle the most outrageous nonsense on his behalf and turned it into a cesspool of lies sophistry and disinformation, not to mention a medium for videos of the most disturbing nature. I worry for Ukraine and Trump’s pandering to Russia which may give Putin the green light for further “acquisitions”. Apart from that mustn’t grumble as we say in England.
French living in Belgium here: Trump's victory is very sad news, especially with regard to environmental issues and the rights of women and minorities.
Im not happy. Trump is a phony. We need another bernie type. Im from florida, usa. I want out of here. West coast sounds wonderful.
gavin newsom 💀
I really hope this takes off for you! Everything is better when done on the local level if you ask me. I love my local LFS but I get the best of the best from my club and other hobbiests. I can actually ask and learn the age of the fish I am buying from the breeder. That's awesome!
I hate how my parties best candidates were run off from the party, and we were forced fed shit and told it was honey.

Bend here. Just recently started building out my van on the channel. The unifying term I use for us is "nomads". That kinda covers RVers, van lifers, car campers, travelers, etc. Meetups are cool... I'm heading down to Quartzsite for a couple weeks to checkout some nomad meetups this winter.
Thats a pretty cool idea! My brother lives in Eugene and we have friends in Gold Beach. OR is a beautiful state.
I live in Rogue River. Where are you?
Hello Rogue River. I'm in Eugene.
Hey, i found your channel today as i wanted to cultivate for my tanks. The first thing i was drawn to was, this isn’t like other Aquarists channels! And please don’t take this the wrong way but i am sick to the back teeth of the polished clinical channels. All lovely and that but i guess im in to honesty and realism ☺️ And here it’s abundant. Looking forward to more “general life” content and your knowledge shared. Cheers 🇬🇧
Where do you sell your cultures?
Very interesting. Where can we find your plants, cuktures and livestock for sale?
Sounds interesting John
here in my country there's heavy fiscalization so people don't leave any stagnant water like this out, since the mosquitoes here cause a disease that kills thousands of people a year! (the mosquitoes spread chikungunya virus, causing dengue fever)
I definitely want to order some
Where can I order?
Nice, I noticed more channels are doing similar changes, I look forward to the new topics besides fish.
I just found your channel and am thoroughly enjoying it. Where do you sell things from? And I’m always up for other conversations.
I look forward to the new topics. I am so glad you said what you did about plants "getting their water leaves" 🤣

Local OR resident interested in acquiring a daphnia culture. Let me know if you are ok with a pickup, if available. I really appreciate the series you put out here. Super cool stuff.
i only want daphnia to feed one betta fish, so ig i'll get snails on the daphnia culture so they dont go crazy with growth bc my betta fish an only eat so much hahah
New subscriber here. Where do you sell these?
I was trying to go to your ebay page but it says user not found?
I have several grindal worm cultures but have never tried white worms.
Is that you John Malkovich?
I am watching Monsters on Netflix. They just referenced John Malkovich. Crazy that you just mention him four hours prior. Error in the code?
Do you have seed shrimp in that tank?
I collected 2 large jars of pond water. Full of daphnia, scuds, snails and other small things i can't identify. Got these for my planted aquariums and want to know how to keep them alive thru the winter to feed my fish. Ive been told culturing daphnia is hard.. What do I do next?
Your videos are actually really helpful. I never thought about some of these micro aquatics needing sugars or soft calcium. Thanks, man.
Daphnia Magna eats algae or green water.......The water will become clear by Daphnia Magna
biggest changes i've seen in over thirty five years is 1. equipment is not made to last at all mostly junk, 2.we understand and are able to keep plants alive now, the south american cichlids packed into 55 gallon tanks thing is no more.3. the reinvention of the wheel,in mid 80's i read an article in an aquarium magazine where a guy put a 10 gallon with a couple inches of dirt in it under window in his sons room,he added a heater and grew vallisneria, again this 1985ish. its not a new idea and im sure he wasnt the first to do it. 4. petco and petsmart have wiped out just about all the mom and pop stores . 5. ther internet is awesome! do your research and order fish/supplies online, really cant be beat. 5. i used to be a fishdork, now im an aquarist? whatever...
Huh, who knew?
Nice!
I am enjoying this Daphnia series! Thank you 😊
I have a question not about white worm but micro worms, wouild shrimp eat them? Your culture of whiteworms is better than any I have had, I think I just don't keep up with regular feeding. I find micro worms and even better Walter worms easy.
What's the best way to transfer live food like this to an aquarium with fish? My plan at present is to have lots of dead leaves on the bottom and just swap them out every once in a while.
I recently saw a video saying that if one puts some food that scavengers like (like ripe banana or boiled zucchini) in the tank at night, stuck onto a fork or skewer, and in the morning takes it and swishes it inside a net under water, then one gets a netfull of amphipod/scud live food.
How do we purchase your daphnia?
When I was a kid (long ago), under gravel filters were claimed to be the absolute best kind of filter. Now one hardly sees them, and many aquariums don't even have a filter other than lots of plants. When I was a kid more people had bright blue gravel, plastic plants, and little pirate chest bubblers and other plastic kitsch. Now there appears to be increased emphasis on "natural" dirted aquariums with lots of live plants and often scuds and microfauna. Also there are lots more species that were totally unavailable decades ago, like stiphodon gobies and obscure Mexican wild type swordtails and more and more kinds of cichlids from African lakes.
The water with additives is the one I would've picked as being better for daphnia. I'd guess that the distilled water or any pure water (with no additives) would make osmoregulation difficult for daphnia and many other organisms.
Google “Daphnia Farm… enjoy” for an older post of mine. I too am enamored with Daphnia/Moina. I look forward to future videos on you experiments. Thanks
What exactly is a clay based substrate?
Could you please tell me your lights schedule for this aquarium?
24/7 - fluorescent - low intensity
@@lifetimeaquarist Thanks good sir.
@@lifetimeaquarist I'm wondering if a higher intensity light on 24/7 would produce an abundance of algae (good food for them while also absorbing nitrogens and phosphates), kinda like a refugium.
Dang bro those shrimp ( even tho probably still reproducing) gotta have a miserable life. I'm no hippy or nothing i fish, hunt, have feeder shrimp, guppy, and convict chiclid (they reproduce with little to no effort) to feed certain fish in my 47 tank fish room to help get them ready to spawn. But i dunno if your unaware or don't care but scuds will attack female shrimp after realizing Fry or after molting their shell. .o have that many scuds in with a handful of shrimp is just not cool man. I'm no one to tell ANYONE how to do there hobby but if you like neo shrimp to buy a cheap 10g tank and raise the shrimp in it. Plus you'll have waaaay more bedding success that way. But you do you, just an opinion from a stranger lol. Good luck
I know this is an older video of yours. Just found your channel. Enjoyed this video. However, is co2 not just as harmful to fish as general fertilisers? I dont know that for a fact. Am speculating. Also, you mention not to use dry food. What do you feed your fish? Thanks edit you mention briefly about foods you culture yourself at the end
I don't know why this video popped into my page, but it made me laugh out loud when I watched it. Thumbs up
You also has a lots more plants in the snail tank. The plants absorbed the nutrients which leave less algae (green water) for Daphnia. The snail also occupy some bio load by producing waste. This will leave less room of bio load for Daphnia.
Mind-blowing collection of crypts ❤
Hello 😊 Such a neat way to water your plants and have some great food for your fish too! Do you find the shade to be a must in keeping the daphnia going?
What did come across?? Wow....I want to use these for growing, feeding my cannabis plants..Ever done that??? Especially the dirt
Do you put them in aquariums?
i’m 1:20 in and all i see is reflection. i also have no idea what dafnia is, a plant, a bug?
Water fleas. They are healthy live food for fish.
