Because rent controls don’t work IF your goal is to have affordable housing for everyone. If your goal is to have affordable housing for a select few like they have in NYC it works for those few but the rent on the rest go up. There is no free lunch. The cost of housing is a supply and demand inverse curve as the number of units go up the price goes down. Cities limit construction of new units to keep the political donations from developers flowing . This is a form of cryonism not capitalism. You want more affordable units do basic zoning and then get the government out of the way.

By not helping those most in need of help to help themselves is to condemn them to a life of dependency, despair and hopelessness.
