Landscape Photography on Location | Capturing the magic of Zion's Subway Hike
Join me on an unforgettable landscape photography adventure as I hike the breathtaking Subway in Zion National Park! Armed with my new Fuji GFX 100s, I start by capturing the stunning Archangel Falls in all its glory. Then, we move on to the iconic Subway location, where the combination of rushing water and warm, golden light creates a photographer's paradise. As the day comes to an end, I switch to film and capture one last image using Fuji Provia 100f, just moments before torrential rain sweeps in. Watch till the end to see the final results and experience the magic of landscape photography in one of the most incredible settings on Earth. #gfx100s #fujifilm #provia #film #filmphotography

Landscape Photography on Location | INCREDIBLE conditions at Great Sand Dunes National Park

    Just found your channel and am enjoying the content. One thing to keep in mind when comparing those cost of outsourcing vs. doing it all yourself is your time invested. When your outsourcing for anything you're paying for their incurred labor but you also need to include that in your own pricing estimates. Don't sell yourself short. Any time you're spending on the that whole process is time missed out shooting and creating. I prefer to do as much of it (printing, finishing, matting & framing) as well but going on 60 one of the most important things in my life now is my time.

      Those are excellent points. It’s something I have struggled with as often I’ll pass on going out to shoot because I’ll think of the backlog of work I still have ahead of me (developing and scanning film, processing etc.) and decide I don’t want to add to the backlog.

    13:00. I’d have gotten a telephoto shot just on the part of the dune where the sand was blowing, using the edge of the dune as a leading line and trying different shutter speeds and waiting for different patterns just as you would with spraying water. But, hey, you’re the one who hiked out there, and it’s not like you didn’t come back with some great stuff. I really like that you didn’t mess with the shot in post at 18:30 to get that warm glow you wanted. I agree: in true landscape photography, you got what you got, and post should only emphasize what’s already there.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you’re spot on. In general I think dunes are best shot telephoto focusing on the details. Just about all the dunes images in my portfolio are telephoto and I had hoped to get some wider shots on this trip. Especially some that included the mountains. I was trying to force that to work and it just wasn’t. I agree on the warm glow. Not to mention there’s no amount of processing that will ever actually replicate that light. It’s either there or it’s not.

    This is just what I need. Thank you. Do you ever apply a laminate film to protect the print (probably wouldn't work on bamboo but on a smooth paper like Moab slickrock). If so, what film do you use? I am hoping to find something optically clear, like the adhesive film used for acrylic facemounts, but with adhesion on just one side as I wouldn't use acrylic.

    • @MrNegative

      When using a rag paper I use a varnish (I show this process in my most recent video). This is how I finish most of my prints. When I have an image that I want the highest level of detail I will print on a gloss RC paper and laminate with a Drytac laminate. The process is largely the same as mounting but you have to be extra careful with dust as even a small bit of dust will show as a bubble in the laminated print.

    Awesome, I’ve been doing exactly the same and framing without glass, I do one heavy coat then 2 light ones, the clients absolutely love the look. It keeps my profit margin up! I must say I really like the look of optica one, I use it for snowy photos, but I hate the paper, I find it ugly and it creases so easily! There elagance velvet paper is a beauty tho. I do the bulk of my panos with Ilford smooth cotton paper for the same consistency. Just gives great results every time and is predictable. It was great to see someone doing things the same way, especially someone with your experience 😊

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven’t had issues with creasing but I usually go right from the printer to the laminator for mounting. I haven’t used ilford smooth cotton in a while, I might need to give it another look. I haven’t tried the elegance velvet yet. What I like about optica is the level of detail. I often find rag papers to lose a lot of that fine detail. Also, I was just checking out your website. Fantastic work! “Breakthrough” is absolutely incredible! I’m a sucker for panos. Really good stuff.

  • @JRileyStewart
    @JRileyStewart 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Oh yea, you can varnish over varnish successfully ( I typically roll 3-4 thin coats). When starting out, I saw many ugly dust blobs after varnishing. I found I could use steel wool to flatten/remove them, then re-varnished and the blobs became almost invisible. Not something I'd want to do for many prints, but it can work.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I should have mentioned that. I mostly meant for spraying it’s best to stick with one because the print is vertical. But yes with rolling I imagine you could easily get away with more coats. The steel wool would stress me out haha! I’ll have to try that. Great idea.

    • @JRileyStewart
      @JRileyStewart 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MrNegative Yep. I also place the print vertically, even for rolling. You'd think I'd get lots of drips, but if you use thin coats and roll, roll, roll until it becomes just tacky (you can hear this happen), the drips never happen.

  • @JRileyStewart
    @JRileyStewart 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Having varnished hundreds of prints up to 32x40", there are ways to lower the cash outlay for equipment and space (but I admire your set-up ;). First to know is I varnish prints in my unfinished basement with all the spiders, dust, and occasional mouse. I built a simple spraying tent from painters poly drop cloth draped over a 4x8ft sheet of plywood. I've had great success eliminating dust using a regular household vacuum cleaner with brush attachment- I vacuum myself (head, arms, trunk), I vacuum all surfaces of the tent, and I vacuum the print before rolling on any varnish. Finally, as you'll see in the video on my blog article, I speed drying time and aid print-flattening using forced air from an HVLP sprayer hose. The vacuuming and drying steps and been game changers in getting successful, clean, flat prints; I've never had to pick off dust/hair from a varnished print since adopting this technique. Hope this helps someone trying to master the varnishing technique as it truly does give photographic prints a wonderful look and feel. Here's the details on my blog: www.jrileystewart.com/info/about-varnish/.

    I am about to buy some color transparency film for my 4x5. I haven't shot color in so long and here at the HOH Rainforest. It is finally beginning to dry up enough to get out with the 4x5. Everything is really greening up as the new ferns are growing and the Alder and Vine Maple leaves are showing up. I will buy 10 sheets of Kodak Ektachrome E100 and see how it works out.

    I would appreciate your advice. I am mounting a valuable vintage photograph that unfortunately was exposed to moisture in the past and is now wavy. I thought of mounting it directly behind the UV glass with no mat, allowing the glass to flatten the photo but was told this process may eventually cause the photo to stick to the glass due to condensation. All the TH-cam DIY videos regarding "flattening" the photo seem too aggressive. Please advise. Thanks

      @MrNegative หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you by chance know what kind of paper it is?

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, okay so likely a fiber based paper. I definitely agree mounting it to glass is a bad idea. I’d recommend you find somebody with a mechanical dry mount press. Flattening fiber based prints is fairly simple with heat and pressure. I’d recommend taking it to somebody that has experience doing this, given the fact this piece is not replaceable. I wouldn’t take the risk of doing it yourself if you don’t have a dry mount press. If you can’t find someone to flatten it for you, I’ve seen people use an iron. Assuming it’s a small print, you may be able to try that with some kraft paper to absorb moisture and protect the print surface. I still don’t recommend it, and haven’t tried it personally, but know others have had success with the method.

      @@MrNegative Thanks for the advice. I've decided to live with it as it is and use your archival mounting process. Even "somebody with experience" could make a mistake and as you say "the piece is not replaceable" (an autographed photo of a 1930's jazz star). Thanks again.

    With experience you will be able to choose a single filter, or if using a colour head, the right combination of magenta and yellow. The end result is the same but you use less paper and time in test prints.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely always trying to reduce paper and test prints. I’ve actually moved to the RH designs meter that helps greatly with that. I’m not sure I agree with using a single filter and getting the same results though. I think with some negatives that’s probably the case but I like being able to split the exposure for different grades, especially with dodging and burning. That’s where I see the biggest benefit. I would eventually like to try the heiland split grade module and see if that improves results with this method. Either way, I look at it like another tool in the belt. Not necessary on every print but good to know when you need it. Thank you for watching and commenting!

      The iPhone image is obviously going to be closer to reality than the flat RAW file. In fact what I often do is snap a photo with my iPhone so that I can reference it when editing my raw files to get them looking true to the scene.

    I have a mini tripod that only occupies about an 8x8 inch area. I got it knowing about the tripod trule, wondering if I could put it on the railing on the platform. I would think that should be fine since it doesn't take up any extra standing space? Going mid July for 4 days/3 nights!

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m jealous! I hope you get good weather. I don’t think anyone will mind the small tripod but the platform shakes quite a bit from people moving. Especially the railing with people leaning on it. Just be careful it doesn’t get knocked off. Once the day trippers leave you’ll have a much easier time.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My camera actually survived just fine. I’m sure some of the dust on my sensor is from Death Valley… but overall not bad. The damage is really the lenses. Especially using zooms, that sand gets in every crevice and you’re left with a “crunchy” feel when you zoom and focus. I absolutely abuse my kit, but even for me this was a bit much haha.

    Nice setup! Thanks for the info. Ive been using an FLM cp30 m5 hybrid tripod with cb-38 ball head since around 2020 I believe. I love it. I have shot up to 8x10 film and heavy cameras with no issues. I may take a look at this even smaller setup you have and that small ball head. The cp-30 m5 is still pretty light but I find that I wish it was somewhat smaller. The main issue ive had with this setup is the black plastic pieces inside of the aluminum twist locks have broken on me numerous times in the field. When this happens I have to leave the leg extended out until I replace it. It's always the bottom smaller leg. I know it happens because I untwist the lock too much and then close the leg. When I do that it will break that plastic piece. So I always try and remember to do a half turn. But sometimes I get in a rush and just undo it too much. It really is not a big deal and super easy to swap out and replace those pieces. I always try and keep extras on hand.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s good to know. I’ve never broken one, but I tend to be pretty good about only doing a half turn. Now I know that’s a risk if I go too far though! I haven’t tried 8x10 on this setup but might need to give it a try. I bet you could get away with it on shorter bellows draw but would worry a bit more if I had a big heavy lens racked out haha. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    How would you frame this float-mounted print? I'm guess there's some type of spacer applied to the glass and backer board to keep the print from hitting the glass?

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it would require spacers. You can either use acrylic spacers or strips of the mount board. Or if the frame has a rabbet specifically for the glass, which I don’t usually like.

  • @mje1625
    @mje1625 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is the 8-ply backer board that the print is attached to the same size as the print or smaller? If smaller, how much smaller? Thanks!

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is smaller. In this case it was about 1/4” smaller than the print on each side. Because the print rests on the tape and not the board, there’s a small gap. If the board isn’t smaller, it will be visible. I also reverse bevel the mount board so it’s less visible as well.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yes I apologize I never got the dry mounting video up. I promise I’ll have it up in the next month or two. I’ve fallen WAY behind! I’ll cover drymounting in both a manual and vacuum heat press in that video. The cliff notes are that it keeps the print perfectly flat. The downside is it is VERY difficult to reverse. If the mount were to be damaged, it’s as if the print itself were damaged. For that reason, museums and many collectors would usually not accept drymounting and would opt for one of the processes we covered in the first three parts. Hope this helps until I get the part 4 out!
