In keeping with increased traffic and flight safety, I decided to look into a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) for my 1945 Piper J3 Cub. Sharp looking Bonanza. Looks like it has Cleveland wheels and brakes. Is that a Hartzell prop? Since it is the original 35, someone has taken very good care of it. I had a G model and put a lot of hours on it. Many times wish I had kept it. I like your comment on experience and instruction. Very sound and safe airplane in the hands of a competent pilot.

    Only problem is tail cone has to be painted. It would be cool if someone made an aluminum tail cone out of very thin aluminum skin. It’s not structural so it would t have to be very thick.

    Love the completely unpainted airframe other than ruddervators! If you really wanted it to look even more amazing you could strip ruddervators and polish them and then coat them with Boeshield T9. It would leave a slight white film as it got sun exposed but it would still look beautiful and wouldn’t corrode.

      Having personally polished planes before, it looks great, but the upkeep is incredible! I like less weight for performance, but a paint job goes a long way in protecting the airframe from corrosion. 20 lbs extra weight or polish every six months, your choice.

    These v-tail bonanzas are such cool planes. would it make a good first plane? are they pretty forgiving?

    • @davecarnahan-aviation798
      @davecarnahan-aviation798 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is an interesting question, Max... I think it depends on a few things such as how many hours the owner has, his/her previous experience, access to a instructor with experience and knowledge on this type of aircraft to help with the check-out, access to a qualified AME with experience on this type of aircraft, sound research on this type of aircraft prior, and perhaps joining organizations such as the American Bonanza Society (ABS). I'm probably not the best suited person to answer your question but these are just some of my thoughts. Personally, I find the Bonanza to be an easy aircraft to fly but that comes with many years of experience, prior research, talking with lots of people and reading as much information as I could lay my hands on. I did not find the retractable gear or hydraulic assisted prop (some have an electric prop) to be an issue. The ABS has a great forum which covers and answers so many questions. Lew Gage of the ABS has written a fantastic book called "E-Series Bonanzas: Flying, Owning and Maintaining a Classic... awesome book... a must have for the older E-series Bonanzas such as mine. There is a fellow on TH-cam (Ben Weeks), and I believe he learned to fly on his father's Bonanza. He would be an excellent person to reach out to, and to also watch a few of his earlier TH-cam videos. Without doing your homework though, I can see getting into unforeseen financial or worse yet, safety issues with the Bonanza as a first aircraft. Regarding your question, "Are they pretty forgiving?", it is a "slippery" aircraft that can get away on you if you lose your focus or are inattentive, especially in night or IFR type conditions. There are so many positive reasons to love the Bonanza, but again, I hope that you continue to ask this great question to many others who are more qualified than myself. I hope this helps!

    • @davecarnahan-aviation798
      @davecarnahan-aviation798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ozelot250 It does have the IO-346 but I'm not the best one to ask as I have not had the plane long or needed to purchase any parts. It is an interesting topic though as people are quite divided on the IO-346. There are a couple of very good and knowledgeable local AME's who have vastly different opinions on the IO-346 where I live. One fellow James Powell has an excellent review on the Musketeer on his TH-cam page (Fastback Flying)... th-cam.com/video/2dA_HuZkOXg/w-d-xo.html whereby he recommends that you avoid any Musketeer with the IO-346. On the other hand, Dan Campbell, the AME that has done the last 5 annuals on my Musketeer (by previous owner) is also an excellent and experienced mechanic familiar with this engine and he speaks very highly of the IO-346, and that if a top overhaul is ever required, parts are readily available as it can utilize the same cylinders as the IO-550 or IO520 (same bore as the IO-346). It was explained to me, and from what I've researched, that the cranks are built very strong and rarely need replacement. Should you need one though, I imagine they would be difficult to find but in my 45 years of flying and aircraft ownership, I am unaware of anyone, including myself, that needed to replace a crank... but top overhauls are relatively common. Nonetheless, both AME views are valid and I respect their differences in opinions. It seems to be the same on the Beechcraft forums... some people either suggest you avoid the IO-346 vs the actual owners of them who seem to speak very favourably. I guess for me personally, I am on the optimistic side and the price of Musketeers with this engine are understandably lower and similar to Cessna 150 prices. I would much rather choose the Musketeer... for a number of reasons (and yes, I have owned and flown 150's). Hope this helps!
