"Away" | 5-Out Offense

"Away" action is a single away screen that typically takes place early in the possession with 5 out spacing. In addition to creating an open look for a shooter, there are a number of counters and actions you can flow into from this away screen.

Staggered Away Screen | Davidson Wildcat's Secondary Break
Under Bob McKillop, Davidson would flow into a staggered away screen anytime the ball was passed to the trailer and he reversed the ball. Often times the player coming off the staggered screen would tight curl or reject the screens, which triggers a screen the screener action (2nd screener in the stagger screens for the 1st screener).

The Right Way to Closeout & Contest
The "Sprint Stop Closeout" as it is becoming commonly known as goes against traditional closeout principles of high hands and choppy feet. However, it is what the best defenses are doing to defend against the highest level players. www.hooperuniversity.com/breakdowns/the-right-way-to-closeout-and-contest

The "blind pig" is a great option to get a player downhill in space, especially if he is being denied along the perimeter.
Face Cuts from the Corner
Face cutting from the corner is a great option when your defender is not positioned between the ball and his check, or if the defender is attempting to lock & trail the player in the corner.
Screen Low, Stay Low to Attack the Switch
Screen Low, Stay Low is a concept used to attack a switching defense where the ball screener screens the lowest part of the on-ball defender's body before rolling. This allows the screener to seal that defender on the top side after the switch.
The Basics of the Peel Switch
The "peel switch" is a defensive concept that has become popular in recent seasons, and is a way to prevent putting "2 on the ball" whenever the on-ball defender gets beat off the dribble. www.hooperuniversity.com/breakdowns/the-basics-of-the-peel-switch
Stampede the Catch (Run Through the Pass)
To "stampede" the catch means to run through the pass or catch it on the move. This is effective because the defender's momentum is working against him as he closes out. This is a great concept to use to combat nail help and use when "shaking" up from the corner in a spread ball screen.

I got into playing basketball very late so my dribbling skills was shit, I can’t crossover anybody or blow past them with a quick first step, but I could do a decent protect dribble, so the “Barkley move” was my default move to the basket. Very effective if you learn good footwork and inside moves.

I’m a PG and what I would do when facing an ice coverage is that I would do a pocket pass to my big and makes him play 4 on 3 like a short roll. If my big is not a good decision maker just tell him to change the screen side and do a snake to FT line and then do whatever options I have afterwards.

Chase uses get action as the main action. However, if the guard receiving the handoff can't get downhill, he can look to hit the player who handed the ball off coming off the flare from 5. If the flare isn't open, 5 can set an empty ball screen for the ball handler. Chase = get + flare + empty ball screen.

A combination of reads and patterns. You run a continuity offense so that your players have freedom while still having enough structure to be organized. Not many calls from the bench in these clips. You may see adjustments made during time outs or half time to the patterns based on how opponents are defending though @@chadspencer954

  • @genxfusion

This system was built for Thompson and Curry. You have to have shooters who can move, get open and make open shots. But they also need the ability to cut to the basket in a split second if the opening is there. This only works with the right personnel and it's extremely unselfish.

How would you react if you ice the screen but the ball handler still dribbles over the top ? Over the top and chase? Go under since the ball is higher?
