The Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya
Built in 1344 by King Buwanekabahu IV, the Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya (Sinhala: ගඩලාදෙණිය රජමහා විහාරය), stands on the border of Udunuwara and Yatinuwara in the Kandy district. Located very close to the town of Pilimathalawa, the Gadaladeniya Temple (which had been named after the village in which it was built) was also called Gadaladeniya Gramaye Viharaya, Gadaladeniya Gramaye Saddharmakirthi Vihayara and Dharma Kirthi Viharaya. Saddharmakirthi was the name of the founding monk.
The main shrine which has a distinctive south Indian design stands on a rocky outcrop at the top end of the monastery premises. Inside one comes across a fine statue of the seated Buddha framed by a Makara Torana or Dragon Arch. This is surrounded by numerous images of deities such as Brahma, Suyama, Santhusthika, Maithri and Natha. Standing statues of the Buddha can be found on either side of the seated Buddha statue.

The Lankatilaka Raja Maha Vihara
The Lankatilaka Raja Maha Vihara (also known as the Lankatilaka Temple or the Blue Temple), is located in Hiyarapitiya in the Udunuwara area of Kandy, Sri Lanka’s hill capital. It was constructed as a four storey building that stood eighty feet high and sits on an uneven rock bed overlooking the Hantane mountain range. The history of Lankatilaka Vihara dates back to the Gampola era and was constructed during that time under the patronage of King Buwanekabahu IV in 1344 AD.
Lankatilaka is a most unique structure in itself, having been built entirely atop an uneven rock surface and rising upto a height of eighty feet. Based on inscriptions to be found on the Temple’s copper plaque, one learns that the foundation of granite was laid on the rock surface and the rest of the structure was made of bricks. Beautiful arches and sculptures enhance the thick outer walls, making this an architectural marvel of that era. There are many inscriptions in both Sinhala and Tamil languages cut into the solid rock which describe the facilities provided to the Temple and the land gifted by Kings who ruled then.

The Embekka Devalaya
The Embekka Devalaya (Embekke or Embekka) Temple is situated in an area known as Udunuwara in the Kandy district. It was built during the Gampola Era (AD1357 - 1374) by King Vikramabahu lll, as a place of worship dedicated to Mahasen, also known as “Katharagama Deviyo”. It is also where local deity Devatha Bandara is worshipped by devotees.
It has been said that the Embekka Devalaya may be the best place in the world, certainly in Sri Lanka to see the finest wood carvings of old. The main Temple or Maha Devalaya itself has two sections, the “Wedasitina Maligaya” (in which the Deity resides), and another which has the “Digge” (Dancing Hall) and the “Hevisi Mandapaya” (Drummers Hall). The Wedasitina Maligaya is where the wooden image of the Deity has been placed.
The main hall provides a feast for the eyes with its columns, pillars and doors all adorned with breathtaking wood carvings. The roof too has its own special design done in wood. A unique feature is that everything consists entirely of wood, with no other materials being used, not even metal. Even the nails used have been hewn out of wood.
