Hi, I'm James. I'm a native English speaker and I also speak Spanish and Italian. I have 11 years of experience with language learning and I share my experience in this channel.
In 2013 I did my Erasmus exchange year (as part of university) in Castellon in Spain. When I arrived, I couldn't speak any Spanish however after immersing myself in the language, I reached an intermediate level after 9 months of living there.
I learnt so much about language learning during this time and over the years since then. Not just principles that apply to Spanish but for any language. I have become obsessed with how our brains learn languages and the psychological aspects of language learning.
More recently, I have been learning Italian and can also speak this at an intermediate level.
In this channel I share my language experiences, tips and advice on how you can learn or improve your language skills. My main advice - try and have fun with it and enjoy the process!
Thanks,
James Hutchinson.

I think if you look up words, you should wait until you are good enough that you can understand the word's definition in your target language. Then you will be learning the word and its meaning without interference from an incorrect interpretation of what the word is. If you are learning Spanish, the Spanish definition for a Spanish word is obviously going to be more accurate than the English definition
How do I find a native speaker of Klingon

Very true
Hi, good video. My experience over the course of 2 years , so far, matches. Start simple and let a natural increasing motivation propel you whilst looking for signs like you explain. Its interesting ive not heard anyone else of youtube mention this, but i was telling a friend only a couple of days ago just this. BTW im focussed in Polish and Italian as a native English speaker.
@@yogabija Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the support :). That's cool
Habits it's best book for ever l read you can learn everything constantly
I've had over 600 day on Duolingo. I spend 5 mins a day and I don't expect too much. However, I feel like I don't progress at all. I think after a while, Duolingo is keeping the learner stuck at lower level instead of helping them to exposure new stuff in their target language. I believe that watching a series offer greater deal than Duolingo, at the same hours of consumption
True, it's good for basic exposure to a new language and for many people that's enough. However, if you want to reach higher levels, you need more than just an app. You need to surround yourself with the language more (even if you're passively doing it and not understanding everything). As you say, watching a TV series is a good example :).
It shouldn't punish you for making a mistake. That's how you learn.

thanks a lot for very useful information.
It works up until a certain point. I’m now learning more advanced words and it’s difficult to understand even with context sometimes. This is why I use Language Reactor. Makes it quick so I don’t waste much time.
i think you are advanced in your language, to aquire it, its exelent
One more thing, is it worth to pay for Plus version if you only want to use it for learning a language ?
Good question! I'd say using the free version is enough for language learning. Especially if you only use it for a few minutes or 'prompts' per day. There's a daily limit but that only becomes an issue after a few hours or a lot of going back and forth with it. If you want to practice actually speaking with your voice, then it could be worth paying the $20/month for it. The free version is quite limited (from what I know right now) but start with the free version. I will always suggest trying free versions first rather than jumping in and paying for it unless you really need it :)
@@learnwithlingoers good advice, thanks
Very useful, more prompts please. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm gonna make more videos covering more prompts. What kind of prompts would you find useful? Like for which scenarios? Cheers
I’ve watched a few of your videos tonight, and I’m really impressed with how clearly you explain these concepts! For the first time, I’m learning a language using the comprehensible input method and it’s working really well. I’m listening to as much content as I can every day, and not worrying too much about not being able to understand things. As you said, I’m recognizing phrases and patterns and when a word comes up more than three or four times, I look it up, but I have intentionally not been looking up grammar. Just guessing and waiting for corrections from my tutor or language partner. Very cool method I wish I’d tried 20 years ago 😅
@@sarahdawson975 Thanks for sharing this Sarah, glad you find my videos useful! Good luck with your language journey :)

Awesome video! The point about cognitive load is very true. Also, I noticed that if I learn a very in an abstract context, or hardly sticks until I see it in a text or video or conversation, that it becomes real to me. It seems to require a social factor to trick my brain into believing that I need to know the word.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Great video! I think you could up the audio quality and maybe use some B-Roll footage to make the video a bit more exciting tho!! Keep it up :)
Thanks for the tips!
My mother was fluent in french (mother tongue), english, german and dutch, she taught me that to really be fluent, you have to "speak with yourself" in the language.

Great Video, Hope the algorithm picks it up soon!
Though you've got to be careful with which one you use. As for instance in the dialect of arabic I speak there's a word that when directly translated comes out as contest (verb), but in practice means something more along the lines of duel. So instead of saying "I'd like to contest those results" you end out saying "I'd like to duel you over those results"
@@Benwut Haha true. I get you. For some people though they're scared of saying anything at all because they don't want to upset the native speaker. Realistically if you're trying and putting effort into speaking another language, the other person will be very forgiving if you accidentally say something offensive. So it's about being comfortable that you COULD offend someone, but that shouldn't stop you from 'giving it a go' because you mean well :). If that makes sense!

I remember back in 2013 when i was 5, as a romanian when i started watching modded minecraft in english at first i was confused because english sounded like romanian. And because at that time i didnt know google translate existed, i didnt look words to translate. Yes i did confuse tanks with thanks but i quickly fixed the mistakes. And i wa surprised years later like 2-3y i speak better than new learners who require grammar videos on youtube. I wanna try same strategy with passive input but for spanish!
