Receiving USS New Jersey RATT Via SDR
USS New Jersey @BattleshipNewJersey was broadcasting RATT/RTTY today and communicating with @nickengland K4NYW. They are using vintage Teletype gear and the ships antennas according to the communication. This was received via the NA5B SDR in the Washington D.C. area as the signal on 7087khz was too weak to pick up here on the west coast at that time of day.

Radio was designed for 225-400, you'd have to modify it AND add some crystals to get it to 220. I was a UHF Comm tech (ET) when I served on USS Ranger, we were probably the last ship in the US fleet to use the URC-9 / SRC-20 radio system and I got to know them VERY well. If you FOLLOWED THE MANUAL (it was scary, a well-written manual for the military!), and used the procedure it gave for aligning the radio, it worked WELL. 16 watt output rating, we'd regularly see 20-22 watts OR MORE across the band after a "by the book" alignment with fairly fresh tubes. Might have helped that a carrier was big enough to reduce the vibration issues.

It transmits just fine down below 225 unfortunately there is just not much going on AM 1.25m.

@@K6YIC My main issue is that the base radio didn't have the crystals in the synth to reach that low - or they were normally "locked out" by the mechanism. The bandwidth of the radio is not even close to being an issue.

See how the type is fainter at the bottom than the top, you can fix that in 2 minutes, there is a small acentric right on the type box, that changes the angle of it sticking the paper.

Got to love the model 28 page printer sound, looks like yours needs a bit of adjustments, back in the day (early 80's) I could strip a page printer down, service it and put it back together. All you have to do to get it printing evenly (virtically is to adjust the type box orientation a bit. Don't even have to remove it from the case to do it.. All your gear is from when I was a Navy comms tech, I've done courses on the 23V and the SRV, your shack looks like my old comcen. Yes, just tweek that type box a bit, the it will be perfect.

We also had 1 whiskey 3 and I did nothing but pms on it. The Amp you are talking about is the URT 23 I believe and the antenna coupler war the sra 49 or src 49 maybe. The phone dial is for remote operation and vox capability I believe. I found a bad diode in the diode Bridge of the power supply that ohmed good but would not rectify loaded. We were in port and while I was on leave a chief from mo29 from treasure island failed to find it and I got it with the same com officer over my shoulder, again impressive. If those crybabies didn't like bending the caps or taching th motor(better be 400hz for supply), try tuning that coupler... we would tune to the ends of the frequency range and monitor comms for short secure communication.

During an exercise all 4 went down because the radiomen did pms after I tuned them; I got em up as fast as I could carry em to the shop with the com officer over my shoulder; impressive, like my Johnson. I was really good on those babies, didn't know very many that could hang on em. When I came aboard, the e6 ordered a case of PA tubes cause they couldn't tune em. If the Ukrainians are using em, sign me up!

This one is giving me problems. I will address them in a video next week. I have the 400hz for the fan, 115 for the accessories but it would seem that T1 is bad. Tap 18 (that supplies the 12v remote power is grounded) this is not allowing it to switch to operate and keeping the HV side powered off. I get nothing from the secondary side of T1 but have the proper power coming in. Luckily I have an extra T1 but I need to ensure the fault is fixed. It blew out the 12v feed on the A5 card which does not have any fused protection. It would be fun to find someone in SoCal that has worked directly on these to help out. I was an AT2 and worked on aviation communications systems (mainly JTIDS)

You shack used to be 'my office' in the 80's as an Australian Navy "ETC" (electronics technical communications), the transmitter room on the HMAS Swan has 5 23v (c or d), 827 exciters and 4 or 5 SRC-21's with the amplifier (with the servo autotuned cavities). We also used R-1051 for Rx. For the HF we used to use an ATU (AN-URC-38 ??) that were very good. Also I have a lot of experience with Model 28 TTY maintenance and repair, we used to use exactly what you have there in your TD heads, reperfs and the KSR. On land bases we also used a lot of ASR's. Even your patch panels bring back memories... Thanks for the tour.. (ex VK1DRL)

I believe the pre-selector can be changed to a post-selector. If you unscrew the pre-selector plate on the front, you’ll find the label for a post-selector. Just flip it over and you’ll find the label for post-selector. Inside the unit you’ll find a rather large black knob near the front of the unit. Moving this knob to the opposite position will complete the change from a pre to a post selector. Hope this helps.

My last assignment before I left Harris in 1984 was final acceptance testing of these transmitters. I would tune them up and test them, then put them in the heat closet for 24 hours. Assuming they passed the heat test, one final go-over to verify specs and out they go. Had a 110 try to kill me one night when the RF cage interlock failed and I took plate voltage through a finger and out the heel of one hand. Also tested the 601s, affectionately known in the plant as the "baby coffins." I also pre-tuned the output filter assemblies (the "tank") and the driver filter assemblies.

The RF-551A Pre-selector was sometimes put between the exiter output and the amplifier input. It helped to reduce unwanted splatter in sites that had multiple rigs on HF simultaneously. Your stack may well have come from such a site. If you open the preselector, don't touch anything; it's mechanically complicated and difficult to reassemble in the field. There may be no one left at Harris who can re-build it. I am a 24-year employee of the manufacturer in Rochester, New York.
