      I've been considering that for a few yrs now. 100 yr old farmhouse. Rough cut 2x4 roof rafters 2" on center, 1x4-6 underlayment, 2 courses of existing ashalt shingles. Top layer over 30 yrs old. (Not leaking...yet). Would love metal roofing, but the cost seems astronomical. House is less than 1500 sq/ft, New England. Options? Anyone?

    Sadly, I’ve tried to get responses from Raindrop for an estimate, but I never get a return call. I’m in San Antonio TX and I’ve been told that the hot summer isn’t conducive to plastic styled gutters. Is that true, or did the gutter company that told me that just pulling my leg because they didn’t sell the Raindrop brand?

    I asked my roofer when we had our roof replaced 3 years ago how much it would cost for the zinc strips on my roof? He quoted me $400. I thought that was very reasonable! That’s installed. The black mold on my roof was caused by a negligent neighbor of mine who had a shaded roof from his trees. Our houses are close together. He never cleans his roof nor does any other house maintenance. It spread to my roof & the other neighbors roofs either side of him. After I replaced my roof with the zinc strips, no more black streaks. Ofcourse my neighbors on one side of me all asked what it was on our roof. As soon as I told them they were delighted to hear we were being proactive so they wouldn’t get the mold anymore.

    No one here has mentioned leaching. This refers to the tar becoming so hot in the summer that it leaches out on the shingles. This is caused by inadequate venting of the attic space or more commonly on cathedral ceilings not having an airspace between the insulation and roof sheathing. Not bacteria growth

    I paid premium price for 40 year shingles that bragged of 3M algae resistant chemistry. At 8 years, lots of algae. I also read that while zinc strips look better along the caps, they only work properly when installed a few rows down, so that more rain will wash over them to release the metal. But that is unsightly, so most installers do it wrong.

    Great video, (thumbs up). I put a thumbs up for a few reasons. As an antenna user and biggest talk of "cutting the cord" I think some people overlook the bigger disadvantages of having a roof antenna and also the dangers associated with it. Sure you will get more channels as I use to have a roof antenna and loved what I received. However, years later I experienced a small leak and the problems slowly escalated from there. Plus trouble shooting can require one to get on a roof. Since I am no roof expert, curious if you ever did a video to explain the damages a roof can receive by just being on a roof. Plus I am wondering how many people take proper safety precautions when being on a roof just to put up an antenna. I often wondered how many people have got hurt putting up rooftop antennas. Sad to think about it, but in the long run, I would rather settle for fewer channels than having some lifelong injury or a free bath every time it rains just because I wanted more channels. PS, I now use an indoor antenna and receive almost just as many channels as when I had my rooftop antenna. Being older, I chose my overall well being over being able to watch a few sub channels which are mainly loaded with Joe Namath and Johnathan insurance ads anyway.

    What if i wanted to mount it to the roof of my house? Are there any options that would allow me to do so without causing leaks in the roof?

    • @rescuemyroof
      @rescuemyroof 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To mount the antenna properly you should use lag bolts to secure the mounting brackets and braces. The problem lies in the fact that these will have to go through the existing roofing materials. It can be done and still be water tight, but it will always be a potential leak spot. If you have to mount to your roof, I would suggest drilling a pilot hole for your lag bolt, fill that hole with a sealant so when you drive the bolt it will seal around and throughout the penetration, make sure the bolt is driven properly (straight and flush), then put a sealant over and around the head of the bolt. The issue with the sealant is that it can fail over time from the elements. You may need to periodically check and re-seal if necessary.
