Evaporative Coolers, Climate Change and Africa: The Tyranny of Thermodynamics by Dr. Ben Parkes
Centre for Crisis Studies and Mitigation Webinar
Extreme weather events are major causes of loss of life and damage infrastructure worldwide. High temperatures cause stress on humans, livestock, crops and infrastructure. Heat stress exposure is projected to increase with ongoing climate change. Extremes of temperature are common in Africa and infrastructure is often incapable of providing adequate cooling. We show how easily accessible cooling technology such as evaporative coolers prevent heat stress in historic timescales but are unsuitable as a solution under climate change.
Dr. Ben Parkes is the Ekpe Research Impact Fellow at the University of Manchester. His work focuses on how large-scale climate change affects human livelihoods.

Real and Perceived Risks of Asteroid Impacts by Prof Alan Fitzsimmons
มุมมอง 2164 ปีที่แล้ว
Centre for Crisis Studies and Mitigation Webinar: Alan Fitzsimmons Asteroid and Comet collisions with the Earth are a classic example of a low-probability, high-consequence risk. Public reaction to this topic ranges from “it’ll never happen” to “we’re doomed”, partly due to the complexity of understanding that risk. In this webinar we will introduce what is known about Near-Earth Objects, how w...

Professor Grant Allen, 'Methane: the un-natural gas'
มุมมอง 1434 ปีที่แล้ว
Professor Grant Allan gives a taster lecture about the global budget of methane. The talk considers how we might calculate emission fluxes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and attempt to balance the measurements we make of greenhouse gas concentrations with what we expect to be emitted from other sources.
