Vor den Mauern von Schiras liegt das schöne Mosella,
dort ist Hafis begraben.
An keinem Ort in Persien flöten die Nachtigallen
so märchensüss wie da.
An keinem Ort in Persien er steht der holde Frühling
so bluhend aus der Erde.
Seltsam! Die Blumen duften auf dem Grabe von Hafis
ganz anders al sonst im Land.
Sie riechen festlich und freudig, die Sinne
so fein berauschend!
Das ist kein Duft nach Blumen,
das ist ein süsser Weinduft.

Before the walls of Shiraz stands the beautiful mausoleum
where Hafez is buried.
Nowhere in Persia do the nightingales sing
as sweetly as there.
Nowhere in Persia does the lovely spring bloom
as abundantly from the earth.
Strange! The flowers growing from the grave of Hafez
have a different scent than anywhere else.
They smell splendid and joyful, intoxicating
the senses!
That is no scent of flowers;
it is the sweet scent of wine.
