The Nilotic tribes in Kenya adopted circumcision and age sets from the Cushitic people they encountered when migrating Southwards. The Luos are the exception since they arrived much later.

Interestingly paternal DNA tests carried out on Nilotic groups in South Sudan show that they were already mixing with Cushitic people in Sudan. E.g. In a sample group of 26 Dinka, 4 people (15%) carried Cushitic DNA (e1b1b). In a sample of 12 Nuer, 2 people (16.7%) carried Cushitic DNA (e1b1b) In a sample of 15 Shilluk, 3 people (20%) carried Cushitic DNA (e1b1b). The Shilluk are part of the Luo, they're the ones who stayed behind when the rest migrated southwards.

On the flip side, the Luos in East Africa seem to be heavily mixed with bantu. E.g In a sample group of 9 Kenyans, 6 people (66%) carried bantu DNA (e1b1a) paternally. These results are by no means conclusive but would suggest that the Luo of Kenya colonised and recruited a large amount of bantu men into their fold. Testing of Luo people will never be representative seeing that we trace our lineages through our clans. So if one of the test subjects stems from a bantu lineage the results will be misleading.

​​@@michaelcody3960 Then why is my paternal Haplogroup Cushitic? I'm from Nyakach Kabodho. My ancestors were supposedly part of the Joka Jok migration but that was a clear lie. My paternal haplogroup is E1b1b E-V32 (Cushitic) and my maternal Haplogroup is L0 (Khoisanid), same as Lupita Nyong'o. Cushitic pastoralists and Khoisan were the earliest inhabitants of Kenya so it makes sense. When I checked my autosomal DNA (my genetic makeup) I only had 4.9% Nilotic DNA, the rest was Niger-Congo. So my ancestor was a Cushitic man who was most likely absorbed by bantu speakers only to then be assimilated into the Luo community and given a fake origin story. Seeing that 50% of your autosomal DNA comes from each parent it means that several clans are either watered down or non-Luo (I don't have time to break down the math but 25% of my DNA comes from Kano, 25% from Kadiang'a, 25% from Kabodho, and another 25% from my father's maternal clan, this can be broken down even further since my grandparents DNA also comes from 4 clans, it never ends). I just visited Gulu this summer and they look nothing like us. A lot of Joluo in Kenya are bantu but since we're so used to their appearance we don't notice it. All my life I've been told that I don't look like a Luo, some have mixed me up for Rwandan or Somali and Ethiopian because of my height (6'1") and somewhat slim face. My father is the same height but looks very Luo. You would never have guessed he's descended from a Cushitic man. My lighter skin comes from my mother's side but my brother is dark skinned. All of my family members are tall, my one sister is 5'9" my other sister is 5'11", my brother is 6'1", father was 6'1" (R.I.P), his brother was 6'2", my distant uncle is 6'5". I always assumed the "Rwandan" look was from my mother's side but it turns out I was wrong. Both sides primarily carry bantu DNA. Your paternal haplogroup is inherited from father to son so the whole Kabodho clan are Cushitic.
