Yamaha 2 stroke oil pump
Accessing and replacing the oil pump and motor on the sub oil tank. The sub oil tank is located inside the hull. It is the main reservoir that you usually fill with 2 stroke outboard engine oil. It pumps oil to a smaller tank located under the engine cowling. If it doesn’t fill the small tank, there is an emergency switch which powers the pump on the sub oil tank. If it still fails to fill you either have a restriction in the lines or a faulty pump/motor assembly. That was my issue. I was able to confirm I was getting 12 vdc to my motor but it still did not fill the small tank. After disassembling I discovered the magnets ,which are glued inside the motor housing had come loose and would not allow the motor to spin. I hope this information helps someone else out. I was not able to find much information on this problem but it really is not difficult once you know what’s going on.

    I pulled that motor apart. Magnets had become unglued. I glued them back in place. Part runs like a dream.

    i put in the new pump and filter but it wont fill the upper tank automatically, only if I use the emergency toggle switch. what could it be? the pump was bad and wouldn't work even with the toggle switch before I changed it. So i know the pump is working now. Help

      Why?? This and the suzuki / mikuni system is extremely reliable and easy to maintain. More issues with oil mixing properly in a bigger inboard tank than the oil injection gives by far!

    What was your issue. My boat run good no alarm going 20 mph but when I start going 40 mph the alarm comes on. I think the oil is not filling fast enough. Can you tell if the alarm is oil or over heating

    • @ct1762

      Look in your manual. A steady tone is engine overheat. Intermittent is either low oil or no oil depending on alarm duration

    This video is excellent. I couldn't get the wiring harness disconnected until I watched this. Thank you! I replaced the pump, but it also seems I have a loss of current in the wiring harness as voltage drops below 12v over time. Regardless, excellent video. Thank you!

      I’m glad it was useful! Wish I knew more about the wiring harness issue you’re having. I imagine there is a relay somewhere in the circuit which is energized by the float switches and in turn energizes the pump. Said relay would be a prime suspect! Good luck!

      @@thomastaggart4581 Any advice on where I can find the relay for the external oil pump? Pump works when hooked directly to a 12v battery. I ordered a new harness after shortening the old one to 3 feet and still getting 7 volts. I'm scanning the manual for the relay. Thanks!

      Hey Jesse! Hope your repairs are going along nicely. Not sure which tank you had break but regardless, I’m pretty sure the sensor would just pull off. Having said that, I did not remove the sensor in the sub-oil tank, which is the one inside the hull of the boat.

    🤔 seems like the switch should be relocated to the console with a low oil light from the engine. The same should be done with the sub oil tank. It wouldn't take much to accomplish this. The time and hassles this would've save many people over the past 30+ years.

    • @ct1762

      No. The gauge on the dash has oil level combined with an alarm for low oil and oil flow. If you don't have the gauge, it's an audible alarm only but 95% came with the gauge!

    Perfect explanation of what I’m looking for. Was trying to ohm coils this morning when I found the switch. I tried it and heard it pump. Took the boat out and it used all the oil out of the top reservoir until it got to the min level then sounded the alarm. We had to idle back to the launch. Guess my pump just went out…

    • @aaronroy9825
      @aaronroy9825 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure you figured this out by now but there is an emergency pump switch on the engine, it takes a while to pump but it gets there

      The oil pump itself has a short blue wire and a short brown wire. They connect to the wiring harness that has a blue connector. I believe that cable will pass through the hull with all the other wires, cables, etc that go directly to the outboard. The feeder tube runs in the same bundle all the way to the oil reservoir on the engine.
