What I imagine is that Joe's regular military job isn't sniping, but as a cook or account and the only reason he was spared from normal patrols (And Walker) was that he's a known hunter so the his superiors gave him a sniper rifle.

This unsettles me so much, even more than horror games. The atmosphere slowly deteriorating and the slightly distorted music, the ambient noise, I know it's nothing more than the main menu with a short animation on loop, but I have this feeling of something about to jumpscare me or a extremely loud sound is about to catch me off guard, but no, nothing happens, it's just eerie.

The Star spangled banner by Jimi Hendrix really does sound like a warped sence of how at first the trio was sent to scout out for survivors, but the main guy just kept pushing and pushing until he becomes a monster

In the final loading screen, it is raining which refers to how the marine corps managed to get in the city at the end to rescue Walker.

Too bad the music in the menu and the rest from the game played by radioman are the reason why the game is no longer available on steam.

The funniest part really to me, is that the only time we see the american flag right side up is at the end of the game, with it toppled off its pole and with the city destroyed

The funny thing I never had a chance to see these changes because I finish this game in one day without taking any breaks

The exact second Jimi's star spangled banner, I knew this game was going to be great. Menu screens to the plot of the storyline is immaculate.

0:43 I noticed that there are two corpses hanging on the building where the football field is. And when the menu changes to daytime, the corpses disappear. But at 2:06 they reappear. You can also notice how the wind changes during the day and at night. If you look at the unfinished building, which is the closest. There, the sand will fly to the left and then to the right.

Maybe Joe wasn't even a sniper and worked in accounting. But when the 33rd needed every soldier to fight, Joe volunteered to be an outpost guard since he was an avid hunter from Texas. Aimlessly he scoped around looking for survivors, enemies and a rescue party (hence the USA flag in distress). Unaware that the CIA was making sure to literally bury everyone in the sands to keep the truth about an American hero away from the public. So there Joe stood at his post...armed with a sniper rifle, a flare gun and a hope for salvation. Only to be fed to the crows before having his corpse fall off the building due to a sandstorm and dashed to pieces on the ground before having another sandstorm bury his remains to never be found again.

It's cool the to see the American flag get tourn up the more you play shows how much a 3 dude team can make more damage than a battalion

Just beat the game and it was a total mind fuck. Overall really good game. My favorite part was the flashbacks when walker was hallucinating throughout the game

The main menu is a hint for the people showing that continuing playing the game, as the “hero” “savior” or “good guy” is destroying Dubai and the inhabitants in it, their probably telling themselves “if I beat it it’ll be all better.” The sniper named “joe” seems to be there as a spectator, the part where he’s aiming his rifle is probably an attempt to kill Walker, the aftermath (continuing the game) ends in his death. Completing the game shows Dubai in ruins, the US flag covering joe might be representing a way that the US is covering up its faults. The eerie national anthem is a nice tribute to its attempt for patriotism and heroism yet lying in demise.

Most people assume this game is about going insane and the consequences of your actions. The thing is, the only way you can stop the events in the game is not playing at all. Most people dont know this but a couple of the bad things you do can actually be avoided. For example you dont have to shoot the civilians after they hang your friend. Theres a dialog for it and you can go through it without killing the civilians. i also tried not shooting at all but they throw stones at you until you die. Most players just do what they're told by the main characters, for example with the mortar. Its supposed to make you feel bad that you decided to do it without second thought, but for me i actually tried to not do it. Its a bit of a diffrent perspective on the game if you question what you do.

No matter how fucked the situation, the flag still flys, and the anthem with it

Seeing the damage caused to a single city is one thing. But to remember the fact you, the player are the only one to blame for it was damn near disturbing. It just goes to show if events or moments in a game are found grotesque by most, then we can only imagine the idea of being left with no choice to kill or be killed irl and suffering mental shock and having an exact “picture” lodged in your head for the rest of one’s life.

That flag is begging to be put out of its misery.

the Jimi Hendrix rendition of the anthem fits well as it is anti war and some of the parts actually sound like bombs dropping, people screaming, etc

Spec Ops the Line is a underrated masterpiece and I hope everyone gets a chance to experience it without spoilers! one I will never forget 👏 Yager games crafted such a deep story, I remember being stunned at several moments in the story, it went places I could not see coming. 10 years later and I am just finding out about the menu change and their is an entire theory about the menu character, this game is a true gem, so much attention to detail.
