    In my country (Hungary), the Mungyos can be bought separately, at least up until the colors of the 72-color set. I wish the additional colors of the 120 set were also available, but I'm not complaining. Mungyos are my fave, and I am just glad I can get them by the piece. I have a couple of Van Gogh sticks too just because they are the other brand that is available by the piece and there are some colors Mungyo doesn't have. (Sennelier is also available open stock, but I'm not that big of a fan of those. I understand they manufacture some of them to be opaque, some transparent, and some halfway between the two, but I would prefer the same opaqueness throughout their entire range, just like Mungyo does it.) I will not invest in more Van Gogh sticks: like you said, they are decent indeed, but that's not enough for me. :) Mungyo is cheaper by the piece and way better quality.

      I have a 48 count set of the Mungyo and they are a lot better than the Van Gogh's, what's the difference between the 72 count and the 120? Are there more colors in the range? John indicated in a review of them that they made a bunch of pearl and metallic colors in the 120 set. I found a website once in which they sold them (Mungyos), only they looked different than what is in the set I have (the artists soft) set.

      @@kdj.imagery4317 There used to be neon and metallic colors too in the 120-color set, but the newer sets have muted, light tones instead. Much better in my opinion. I actually like using neon colors, but I think the 120 set is a lot more professional and a lot more usable without them.

      @@kdj.imagery4317 Noooo. 😄 The old 120 set had some extra normal colors and some neon and metallic ones. The new 120 set has no neons and metallics whatsoever. Insead of those neon and metallic colors that they removed, they added muted light colors. Those are much more useful than neons and metallics that no one used. The muted ones have some pinks, blues, greys, etc. Try to find a color chart online of the 120 set, and if you see no neon colors in it, that's the one you are looking for.

    I find that using a aerosol Kamar varnish made by Krylon is really good! I usually apply 2-3 light coats and it has a little sheen if held at an angle but looks okay. I've seen others on TH-cam use acrylic brush on varnish and have tried it once and it seemed to go on well with the first attempt, however the second try and it just beaded up like watercolors on a plastic palate. As for the Royal Talens website in the US, I couldn't find any info on it other than where too purchase their products. They had a link for artists too upload artwork created with their products, only when I clicked on it there wasn't anything there. Not sure if nobody just hadn't posted anything or if I got an "404 Page Not Found" error.

  • @starr-starr

    I am a big fan of the Talens varnish. I have come to similar conclusions via my own experimentation too! I have gone as much as 2 parts water to 1 part varnish, but it is very very watery, the 1:1 dilution is better, with the undiluted on top. However, I am also now testing Winsor Newton Artisan Water Mixable Varnishes - the bottle says “water mixable oil colour medium”. Its for varnishing water mixable oils, but I decided to give it a try. It’s available in 75ml and 250ml bottles. In the US, the 75ml is currently a little less than $8 and the 250ml is currently about $15, compared to the Talens which is $16.25 for 75ml! I have only tested full strength so far, but it works great, very similar to the Talens. Two other advantages - it has UV protection (yay!) and has three gloss levels to choose- matte, satin and gloss. I’ve only tried the satin, since that is what my local store had, but I plan to try the others too, just to see what they look like. There is even a varnish remover for it, although I haven’t had any use for that. I like the Sennelier fixative too, but that is also very expensive in the states.

    Well, let me be the first too say...these probably aren't your favorite pastels right? This brand was my first set when I wanted to try oil pastels many moons ago. I wasn't very pleased with them on the count that they were hard as rocks! I didn't pick them up again for several years, then with the invent of TH-cam I saw other people blending OPS with paintbrush thinner/cleaner and I tried it and found that they were a little more easier to work with.

    Yes, Soho Urban Artist is Jerry Artarama's house brand. They also have a 48 color + 4 whites and a 12 set + 2 whites. I suggest comparing the price plus shipping on Jerry's site with the Amazon price, especially if you plan to order more than one item. Do you use white more than other colors in your work? I hardly use it and actually prefer more nuance whitish and pale tones for highlights, but I notice some brands including multiple whites in their sets.

    I agree, I find no use for the colorless blenders. Just a pastel with the oil and binder with no pigments. I have this set and my thoughts are the same. It's a nice range of color and the numbers (ex 207.5/207.9) designate the tints of the color. I have found them too be fairly good however, some colors are different than others and they are a medium in firmness. What I don't like is that some blend well and others don't. I use a white stick and make a base layer and then blend the colors over top and they seem to blend better. Also it depends a lot on the surface of your paper. Perhaps using them as a base layer and using some Mungyo over the top.

    • @viktoriaballa9730
      @viktoriaballa9730 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I don't use them with oil pastels, but the colorless blender can be used with color pencils and even hard or soft pastels, just like the colorless blenders that they make specifically for pencils. If I want to make the colors of my pencils or hard pastels more intense or a bit less textured, then these blenders are perfect, and the ones for oil pastels work just as well with pencils. Another use would be with watercolors, where sometimes people use some waxy substance (wax, white crayons) to preserve the white of the paper by repelling the watercolor.

    • @kdj.imagery4317
      @kdj.imagery4317 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@viktoriaballa9730 That's an interesting idea using wax crayons and or the colorless blenders with watercolor! I don't work in the medium enough to warrant buying small bottles of masking fluid only finding myself using it perhaps one or two times and the rest goes too waste. I like using color pencils sometimes, however I find that they don't last very long unless you are making a small drawings. Even then I find that I can't keep a sharp point on the count that they break easily when trying to sharpen them.

    I like too use Turpenoid as a blender. I scribble some color on the surface then use a paintbrush slightly dampened with the Turpenoid. For one it extends the pastels and also it allows for the brushstrokes to show thru. Not sure what type of a surface you are using, if you use papers, even ones made for acrylics you have too be careful not too use very much of the Turpenoid. As you mentioned, the use of it is best for base layers. As for detailing, I don't do very much detailed work I like to make impressionist style artwork. Great video, cheers!

    I was hoping this would have tips for on the go storage! I take my oil pastels to plein air or urban sketch, keeping them in the boxes always results in pastels everywhere! Hi Anni, I suppose it depends on your own budget really but if I had to choose a general moderatley priced one I would go for the Daler Rowney pastels. I have used them almost the entire time and find them to be very good. I used them pre 2000 when they were smaller but have searched high and low for them as they are now vintage and have thousands. Probably ,I expect the biggest collection of these vintage ones in the world it would not surprise me. However, having now got used to the bigger style ones I can say they are just as good. I would choose what I need and add other pastels of different brands or colours as needed from loose stock where ever! Hope that helps, let me know if you want any more info/help! I will do more soft pastel vids at some point and much better than I have already achieved as they were some of the first I ever did!

      @@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 I will definitely have to check out the daler rowney pastels then 😊 I am in australia and just have the monte marte ones. But I find them a little hard to work with. I have pastel mat paper. Not sure if it’s because they are square or hard pastels. But that being said I usually just do paintings so pastel is not a medium I’m used to. As for the oil pastels how are you going with the monte marte ones? Do you recommend them? I’ve seen your reviews for your other oil pastels. I like your paintings at the end 😊. Do you recommend sennelier ones or are they just too pricey?

      @@annifanni23 I do not know what the Mont Marte soft pastels are like but based on my experience with others I think they are probably a bit on the cheaper student end. I would almost put money on the fact that Daler Rowney are much much better. If it helps, they have a softer although not too soft chalkier feel. I personally love them. As for Sennilier Oil Pastels.....yes I would recommend them but I feel they are limited in their use because of being soft. Probably quite difficult for most beginners to handle in my opinion and you could end up in a mess and demoralised thinking you had spent all that money on a alleged superior pastel just to get a mess so how could others hold up well? Softness is not the end goal and not everything and there are better pastels which combine enough softness with the ability to get better details if thats what you are after.....there are better ones and also cheaper that are better sometimes......I haven't used the mont martes for a pic yet but have done a guide on the softer version of them which initially seem to be excellent!

      @@johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 ok 👍 I will definitely have to get the daler rowney then since the sennelier are so expensive even for just a 40 set. @@annifanni23 Artecho are very good and very cheap. I recommend them for starters and they are lighfast too....an exceptional deal for a set of 72. Caran Dache neopastel are my favs as too are Hwawon but they are expensive. Artecho for me are the best starter oil pastel but are professional standard too .I sell them to my art groups. They really were a hidden gem!

    Thank you - this is useful information. In the states, I've only been able to find the detail colour shapers in sets and they are quite expensive, but they pay for themselves in a short amount of time and they don't need constant replacing. I have the white and grey sets and find them very useful in my work, but my preferred shape is the round cup (working on the edge). I'll have to add the extra firm set to my next art supply order. Personally, I don't get on with the cotton buds for blending - the fuzz and the constant replacing drive me nuts.

    • @johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757
      @johnsartmaterialguidestuto7757 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to get buds that are firmer! Cheap ones are better in my experience, more expensive are softer and therefore fuzzier. I have done a vid on blending so please take a look. Lighter pressure with firmer buds is better. They also last a bit longer too although if blending properly you will def go through several. They are a bit better than colour shapers. Keep watching and I will show some other blenders soon regards John

      @@brendamorgado562 You can get the soft and firm ones individually from Blick. The smallest size (0) only comes in the full set of 5 or 6, but Blick carries the extra firm set in addition to the firm and soft. I ordered individual ones in extra firm from Jackson’s Art Supplies. Amazon has silicone blenders from Green Stuff World that look comparable (they are for art, not nails), but I haven’t tried them.

    The sennelier are supposed to be transparent and semi opaque in some colours depending on the pigments used. Luckily they inform you so you don’t have to use those if you don’t want to try glazing etc,

    They are nice, I picked up a 40 set. I wrapped mine in masking tape, and have seen recommendation to use latex finger cots with them, which does work pretty well! But it’s nice not to have a label if you want to use it on the side and cover large areas fast. Everything Holbein I’ve ever tried has been top notch. Hope you have a great holiday, in spite of the weather!

    Excellent review, thanks. A while back, I ordered a few Holbein oil pastel sticks out of curiosity, and I agree with a lot of what you mentioned, they're firm enough for detail but blend like a dream. When I was sketching out some rough paintings, I found myself reaching for them more than my Senneliers and kept wishing I had more colors, heh.
