ART VLOG - Emotional fineliner & watercolour tree art (dealing with loss & a tribute)
This video is a little bit different from my usual ones, because it deals with emotions and loss. Last year I've had to say goodbye to my last surviving parent (my mum), and some emotional issues have come up, naturally. However, it is not meant as a depressing vlog at all(!), but more like a tribute and just dealing with the realism of a new normal. I hope you will join me on this small personal and emotional art journey, especially if perhaps you are going through a similar phase in life? If so, maybe we can be of some small comfort to each other… But if you don't feel like any of 'this', of course give the vlog a miss, and perhaps I'll see you in the next one.
Practical information:
The materials used for the drawing are as follows:
- The fineliner is a Sakura Pigma Micron PN fineliner, black.
- The watercolour paints are Talens Rembrandt, Horadam Schmincke and Daniel Smith.
- The paper is Fabriano Artistico hot press watercolour paper white 300 gsm

CALM ART VLOG - Plein air drawing an old willow
มุมมอง 402หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I’m drawing a big older willow tree plein air. There is a lot of fineliner drawing on location going on, as well as musings on my love for trees, monochrome line drawings, and, as promised, an update on the grebes. I finish the piece at home later. Care to join me for a nice peaceful art vlog? 😊 If so, I hope you enjoy the video and thank you so much for watching!!! The materials ...
PEACEFUL ART VLOG - First plein air of the year! Fineliner drawing of a willow tree in April
มุมมอง 2032 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello everyone! In this video I’m going to a new favourite spot in the Amsterdam Forest, in April, to draw plein air. I head out for two separate outings, so there is quite a bit of drawing on location going on (as well as a bird intermission, lol). And then later I finish the piece at home, as per usual. Subject? A young(ish) willow tree. Medium? Fineliner on watercolour paper. Care to join me...

ART VLOG - Plein air fineliner drawing of two willow trees in very early spring

In this art vlog, I’m making a plein air drawing of two pollard willows (knotwilgen) at the end of March, in the Amsterdam Forest. ART VLOG - A quick(ish) plein air drawing of willow trees in late winter

Hello everyone! I’m trying to work faster for once, so I set myself a time limit of one hour for drawing plein air. I failed 150% in the end. 😆 But I still like the drawing, which is of a row of willow trees. I’m starting the drawing outdoors and then sneaking in some additional drawing time at home. Ah, that is a pity. However, most tourists/visitors don’t end up in the Amsterdam Forest, as it is quite a bit out of the way from the center. I just happen to live in the right part of town, to be able call it reasonably close. I hope you still had a good time though! And thank you for commenting, as well. ☺

    The two swatches after 10:19 Talens Rembrandt titanium buff and Schmincke Horodam Potters pink, which you say have both yellowed, is it the paint, or the paper? I think I can see yellowing of the paper when you bring the two halves together could it be the paper which has made the paint colour look different . Thanks for all your hard work, mammoth task.

    • @suzand.
      @suzand. 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi & thanks for watching! I don't think it's the paper. (Unfortunately, because I'd prefer that actually, lol). I used good quality by Arches and I did check the backs of all my tests. Sometimes you can see a bit of yellowing on the back because of the tape I used to stick it to the board. Also, for this small part I had a desk lamp on to the right, which cast a bit of a yellow glow. So, alas, that titanium buff did that all on it's own, although I'm still holding out hope for the Potters pink. ☺

    Thank you for sharing your extensive research with us! It would be interesting to see a lightfastness test with UV protective spray because I'm skeptical that it makes much of a difference. Either way, I think I'll just continue painting with non-lightfast colors because searching for completely lightfast options is exhausting, expensive, and seems near impossible.

    • @suzand.
      @suzand. 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad you found the video useful! ☺ I have by now tested a W&N UV protective spray with some alcohol inks, and that was not(!) a good result (faded within a few months). But then again, inks fade so fast, it was probably an unfair test. I’ll try again with some watercolours, one fast fading, one with only slight fading after a year, but like you, I am not very hopeful it will have any effect anymore. And I hear you about finding lightfast options being exhausting etc.! I’m still trying, so I’ve got a few new Daniel Smith replacements for colours that I consider necessary, which I’m currently testing. However, if those proof not to be lightfast one year later, I’m not sure what my attitude towards the whole thing will be either going forward… 😁

    Very thorough and interesting video thank you Suzan, I think many red and violet pigments are more fugitive than other colours, particularly the PR83 alizarin crimson which is a most gorgeous colour but not lightfast. It's a shame about prussian blue, it is such a pleasing colour. personally I like Indanthrene blue PB60 so that's a disapointment for me.

    It must be just the way it looks on camera because the Van Gogh Prussian Blue didn't look like it faded at all whereas the Schmincke was noticeably different. I appreciate all the effort you put into doing these! Filming the making of the swatches, the year later filming, and then going through and putting those bits together and editing them...........

    • @suzand.
      @suzand. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for commenting! That Van Gogh Prussian blue was way darker and more vibrant to begin with, that might also have something to do with it? I stared and stared at my swatches a lot(!) but the result does not always show up well on camera, alas. It was quite a bit of effort, but at least now I know what I've got, right? And all the footage already helped me re-identify some stuff, so worht it. ☺️

    To be quite honest, I didn't notice any kind of speech issue at all. You sound just fine and "normal" to me. And those results are really surprising! And as far as Prussian Blue goes, since I heard you mention something about that being the color that inspired your lightfast testing, I know that it isn't lightfast, but I also learned that it comes back if left in the dark! I would love to try that!

    This is a really good video, thank you so much for sharing your results! I am also making my own lightfastness test, but I only have a south-east facing window. So my results take longer to get to your level. As for some lightfast pigments, I suggest that you look on Kimberly Cricks website. She tested a lot of colors. Handprint (google search: handprint watercolor pigments) is also very good as a resource, but a bit older. And for looking up colors in general, Jane Blundells blog is also highly recommended. So as my lightfastness tests are not in a south facing window and only a little more than one year old, here are my suggestions for yellows and reds: PY154 PY175 PY150 PY129 PR122 (it’s lightfastness is better than on the label. It is one of the most lightfast red (magenta) pigments) PR255 PR254 All cadmium yellows and reds and oranges: PY35, PO20, PR108 PR209 PR179 PV29 PV19 (in its Rose shade) is my favorite red and showed no fading so far. But I predict that this could happen in my second year of tests. But in general I chose all of the colors I own with lightfastness in mind. I followed recommendations from the above mentioned websites for most of my colors. That’s all what I have at the top of my head right now. Have fun looking them up 😍😊 (I might edit this post when I remember more colors 🤭)

    I've heard that UV spray doesn't really work, but I've never tried it. We have to remember: paint lightfastness is best preserved under museum conditions...low light (or managed lighting for certain time periods, I think?) and mounted under what is called "museum glass" that is made w/UV resistance in the glass. I think it's very pricey. All we can do to preserve our paintings is arm ourselves w/knowledge of best practices, and recommending to our customers, if we're selling or if it's going to hang in a gallery, that they don't hang any art work in sun or even bright light, and then we have to kiss 💋 it goodbye, right? I'm getting ready to get some of my art printed and I understand that the ink colors used in printing are more lightfast than almost any of the paint we use. That's good news! 😁

    • @suzand.
      @suzand. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment!! You're totally right about the lighting conditions, of course! It's certainly a trade-of for the ease of using watercolours and the beauty of the medium in and of itself. Most oil paints and acrylics are far less likely to fade, at least my own test show me this. I'm going to test some UV protective measures, for sure, see if they work (and I have plenty of non-lightfast paints to test with, lol). But I'm also still going to try and collectc a basic (biggish) palette that's as lightfast as I can get it. PS. Not good at saying goodbye to my work myself, definitely prefer the printing version. 😄

    • @mald379
      @mald379 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe it's the other way, printing inks will generally LESS lightfast than artists grade paints. You can see it in any bilboard or magazine cover that were out in the sun for 1-2+ years. Meanwhile classic pigments like ultramarine blue, phtallos, siennas, umbers, ochres, cadmiums, cobalts, quinacrodones, etc will all outlast that, i think nowadays in pro paint only opera rose and alizarin crimson are still being sold despite being fugitive.

    • @renmuffett
      @renmuffett 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The UV protection glass doesn't work 100 percent either because sunlight and lighting have other rays coming through. Plus the UV glass has a tint to it that compromises the original colors used also.

    I agree with @erikaleighart to try PY175 as a lemon yellow. Winsor Newton calls this Winsor Lemon. It made it through an 18 month test in my south facing windows in the Mid-Atlantic in the US. None of my deep reds (I tried over 12) made it through without changes, except my cadmiums. Some faded, most just had color shifts, usually not in a good way. Reds (and purples) are simply difficult, with the exception of cadmiums, which are known for their stability. There are some brands with deep cad reds- leaning to purple, Schmincke‘s is more blue leaning than Rembrandt. I have one from Utrecht ( a small American brand) that is quite a deep red, leaning purple. Qor Cad Red Deep also looks lovely ( but I think is very expensive in Europe). There are so many things that go into stability, environment plays a big role. Humidity can wreak havoc on watercolor. The numbers that manufacturers put on their tubes are from testing that was done nearly 25 years ago. Pigments manufacturers change, even the method of synthesizing some pigments has changed, and that can affect the stability. Manufacturers, if they do any testing at all, now use a Xenon arc lamp that is supposed to mimic so many years of UV exposure, but it is really not the same as actually hanging on a wall. And those numbers are for museum conditions too. I enjoyed watching the video, thanks for all the work!

    You mentioned suggestions for some spots on your palette you are trying to fill with more lightfast options…For a cool-leaning red, how about PR264? And for a cool lemon yellow, maybe PY175 (Winsor and Newton has a very nice one)?

    I am quite literally in the very middle of swatching all my supplies and doing exactly what you did, so I know how much work this is. But it’s great to do, right? Because then you can sort out whatever is not lightfast and say with confidence to anyone purchasing your work that you use lightfast materials. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this in a video on TH-cam. 😊 What a lot of work not just to do the tests, but also to compile everything into a video!

      Thank you so much for your comment! This was indeed a ridiculous amount of work. 😄 Worth it in the end, though, even if the results were not quite as I’d hoped. The search continues for certain lightfast colours, and I will most definitely take your suggestions into consideration. Thanks for those. 👍 W&N is readily available over here, that helps as well. Goodluck with your swatching/testing-journey!

    I’m curious to see the results. I have a large Rembrandt pallet, and a small schmincke pallet. Also, a few schmincke granulated paints. I watched the video all the way through. It’s very calming, your commentary is so relaxing and conversational.

      Thanks for commenting! Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope to have the result-video up in two weeks. Probably not going to be sooner, because I'm still getting used to the whole recording a voice-over thing. 😊 (I'm afraid the news is not all good, though.)

    Wonderful video, and I love the mix of fine liner with pencil! It's a combination I never tried before, but definitively curious to try it someday. All the work you did in the sky really paid off - the whole drawing looks amazing. Super happy to have found this channel and your work!

    Beautiful. I had a set of 12 Polychromos laying around for a long time and tonight I decided to use them in my sketchbook. I was wowed by them in every way and considering getting more colors which brought me to your video. I loved watching you draw with the fineliner. I think I learned a trick or 2. Thanks. All the best to you!

    I was searching for info on Rembrandt olive green and saw this video. Thank you for posting your test details. Here in India we frame watercolors and keep inside. Even the most lightfast watercolors may fade in the tropical sun if kept in balcony or direct sunlight. Not only do all well known brands have Prussian blue, they have mixtures with that too. Like Prussian green of Daniel Smith, Violet lake of Mijello etc. WN has another version of pb 27 named Antwerp blue. Does this pigment fade less in mixtures?

      Glad the video was of use to you! In May I did a quick in between check on my new, better and bigger swatches, and again that olive green held up fine. Even better, I put my old tests back up as well, so they’re nearing the two-year mark, and the olive still looks good. I don’t know about Prussian blue in mixes, I’m afraid. I just know by now that you cannot trust what it says on the tube, and I simply test everything I have. And I look online for information as well, of course (but I still test). As I’m sure you know already, Jane Blundell has a great amount of information on her site concerning watercolours and lightfastness tests, and also Kimberly Crick.

    Also what paper used matters and water etc its complex thing. but there is pigments like prussina blue what i recommend simply avoid. i have few what are likely problem even manufacutrer own tests but their features maeks me want use them at least if i seen fading real hanging condintions not yet possbility do weinow tests. i dont know aparment owner thinks if i put tests window. and glass at least here blocks most uvb radiation what is thing what is problem some pigments and also makes skin cancer.
