The Women of Wicked Australia - "Defying Gravity"
มุมมอง 7K8 ปีที่แล้ว
In celebration of the Australian production of Wicked, this comparison compilation pays tribute to every single actress who performed the role of Elphaba in Australia between 2008-2015. NOTE: All audio was recorded during various Australian performances by each Elphaba between 2008 and 2015 only. I've handpicked all excerpts from my collection as I believe these to be the best performances of "...
The Evolution of Jemma Rix - "Defying Gravity"
มุมมอง 35K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Jemma Rix is one of Wicked’s longest-serving cast members, performing the role of Elphaba over 1000 times in 5 different countries for nearly 10 years. Beginning her Wicked career in a condensed version of the show at Universal Studios in Japan, she later went on to become the official stand-by in the first Australian production of Wicked before taking over as lead. This video is intended to sh...
"Defying Gravity" - Rob Guest Endowment Gala Concert 2014
มุมมอง 8K10 ปีที่แล้ว
The cast of Wicked Australia perform a special rendition of "Defying Gravity" led by Jemma Rix (lead Elphaba), Ali Calder (stand-by Elphaba) and Sophie Wright (understudy Elphaba). The Rob Guest Endowment Gala Concert was an annual event held in recognition of the late Rob Guest and his achievements in the musical theatre industry. An award was given each year to an emerging musical theatre per...
God she is still my favourite Elphaba. Untouchable. Absolutely untouchable.
We saw it 12th Jan 2025 in Perth and Patrice was Elphaba again (announced as a guest star) Amazing :)
She hasn’t done this role for 14 years (even longer time away from the role than Jemma) and pulls out all the same opt ups she did in her prime???? She’s incredible
I’d give anything for another Carmen show
Wow this is really one for the diehards 😭
Remarkable
I have always loved her fiyero riff 3:10
Alright Jenny, you got one more production in you left
WOW
The fact that I got to experience this live on Sunday AND during the matinee yesterday was not something I had on my 2024 bingo card!
WHATTTT OMFGG
I know myself and everyone else who’s been deep in the Elphaba recordings from the beginning gasped when that opt up happened. It was legendary 14 years ago and I never thought I’d hear it again
wow, this is CRAZY
what is with australian elphabas returning more than a decade later and still sounding the exact same if not better
Saw her cover in Brisnbane in 2024, damn, it's amazing she's still got it.
She is fucking incredible!
she hesitated a bit to do her opt up, but then was like "f-ck it" and just went and did it I mean, at least that's what it seems like to me, she seems unsure... But then again, this was AMAZING! this audio could pass for one of her original run, her voice is still just as strong!
Did she remember the script after so long?? Amazing though
She would’ve had put-in rehearsals.
@@JMThompson95I think she said that she only ran through it once before going on
she really pulled out all the opt ups for this one HOLY SHIT
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THERE
the defying opt up on her first show back after almost 15 years absolutely insane
Does anyone know why they ask old Elphies back for the show? She is amazing tho!!🧙🏼♀️🙂
It's when they need someone at short notice who knows the show
A common scenario is that the principal elphaba is sick, (or has a scheduled abscence) the standby is sick, and the understudy either has to go on for a DIFFERENT role or is sick as well. They just don't have an elphaba available because of a myriad fo reasons. So they scramble to find someone that is close (or within easy travel) that has played the role before and is willing to go green again!
This emergency cover usually means that they don't have anyone in house that can cover the role. They typically have at least 3 ppl that can jump into the role at any moment. (Principal, standby, understudy)
@@DownTheWitchyRoadDo you know if Sheridan is sick because they already have 2 emergency covers for Elphaba?
@@grandpianoalex89 I read a news article about Carla Stickler, a former Elphaba who retired from theatre and moved into IT. They asked her to come back seven years later as an emergency cover, because COVID was wreaking havoc on the cast. They flew her in from Chicago and got her in front of an audience within a week.
It’s been nearly fifteen years since she last played Elphaba and yet she sounds likes she’s just picked up where she left off! I really hope she gets to do a few shows! She sounds INCREDIBLE
I think her voice has matured and I mean that in the most positive way possible. Her tone is so much richer now. She is amazing
I watched her todayyyy she was amazinggg
2:19 The same riff 14 years later omg 😭🙏🏽
This is insane
Why is Glindas part in Japanese while Elphaba is in English? It sounds great regardless
I have a very fond memory of seeing the Manila leg in 2014. The Elphaba that time was magnificent. Only now have I thought of reviewing who played that year and it was Jemma! <3
She recently did an emergency cover in Melbourne in 2024
There were definitely some choices made. Jemma is the Queen for me and in 2024 her emergency covers sound like she never left.
My first Elphaba!!!! And remains my favorite!! Truly a powerhouse. I am still hoping that she comes back as a regular and tour around asia again!!
SAMEEEE i watched her in 2012 in Philippines. she made me cryyyyy <3
What happened? Did Sheridan get sick? If she was called on a sunday and performed on a wednesday, who did the tuesday show?
Wow, she still has it. Incredible!
Thank you for posting ❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this!!! Please, please post more if you can!! I’d love to hear the end of “I’m not that girl” as Jemma talked on Em Rusciano’s podcast about how she changed the note at the end 💚
She didn’t say she changed, she said hit it as it was written. When she did Elphaba originally she couldn’t hit the note as written because it was too low so she sang it higher, but now that she is older she was able to hit the low note as it was written for the time.
@@Rac2703 yes that’s what I meant, she changed it compared to last time. I’d be excited to hear it.
A little reunion w/Courtney. She was Courtney's sister Elsa in Frozen
THANK YOU for sharing this! Still crying I missed it but feeling a little less devo after listening to this. What an incredible moment, absolute ICON!
Hearing this is so incredibly overwhelming 😭😭 Such an amazing story and a fantastic performer 🎉🎉🎉
My fave consistently slays 💚💚💚 I love how she relishes every note
Wow!!!! She's just getting better and better
Phenomenal
top ten things NOT on my 2024 bingo card
OMG I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN THIS!!!!!!
To come back after a 9-year absence with two days of rehearsal and absolutely body it? Legend.
Longest Running Elphaba, right here. She has done the role more times off and than Jackie Burns, Dee Roscioli or Jennifer Dinioia or Rachel Tucker and Willemijn Verkaik ever did. Without fail she, every time Wicked Comes back to Australia shes part of the cast in someway
Is that by time or by number of performances? We had a discussion on reddit recently about who took the crown of the most number of Elphaba performances. I thought Jennifer Dinoia had taken over the number from Willemijn by now.
@DownTheWitchyRoad By years, she started in Wicked Universal Studios Japan, then in 2008 she became the Elphaba standby in Australia and has done the show off and all the way till 2024, without fail.
I can't believe i missed her by a few days. I would have screamed lol
crazy how you need to update this now in 2024!!!!
Still buzzing from Wednesday :’)
She’s a legend
i was lucky enough to be there by chance and didnt know she was preforming till they anounced it, she was incredible!!!!!!! i am obsessed, everything from her tone to her pitch and expression was amazing. Best Elphaba ive ever seen and probs will ever see!!! sooo luckyy
I saw her last night (Friday) and she was amazing. The crowd went bonkers! 🤩
