Thanks for this video and your very fine books, which I found thru this video. I returned to watch the video again after finishing your Ice book. Your storytelling and humor are kind and thoughtful. I am thankful to have learned about your sailing family and your experiences. All the best to you.
I really loved your video. It is wonderfully filmed and the narration was excellent!
What an absolutely wonderful film, and what a great choice of the very talented young Dean to narrate it.
A really great video, and very original to use Dean to do the voice over.
Thank you very much!
I spent 3 months in the South Pacific crewing and brings back a lot of memories from 1987. And reminds me why I've never been on a boat since!
haha 😂 it's not for everyone!
porfavor mas videooos!! que hermosa experiencia, los felicidto y admiro
Gracias!
Congratulations on your passage. Great to give your kid such an amazing experience. Great narration by the way! I'm curious what the passage was like through Bellot straight, any issues through there?
Thanks, Dustman! Bellot was a highlight of the trip, where we saw most of the polar bears. We had slack current, sunny skies, light wind, and it was ice free so very little danger. However, I could see it being a very different experience in more typical conditions!! Fair winds!
I had read your book. It was of interest as I sailed the Northern wilds a lot on my ex stepfather's yacht that he designed himself back when I was a teenager girl in the USSR. He used to compete in trans-ocean competitions on that yacht despite closed borders. You are dead wrong about people being kinder in the North, we almost got murdered more than once, it was the 80s. I travel solo full time in my RV now staying in remote places in the States and been traveling fulltime and soli my entire life. You should have a real youtube channel, instead of that insta- website, insta- just got very bad rap now with all the fake and vane drama queens using it, I cant even view your insta channel as I dont have an "account" with them and wouldn't. You are right in your book about exceessive restrictions in many places down South, even sailing in Soviet Union we didnt gave to deal with a fraction of that crazy of modern BS!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm sure you're correct about people not being friendly everywhere; we have the freedom to avoid the bad places, but not everybody does. We don't post any video on Instagram, mostly just the occasional picture for Dean's his grandmothers and other people we meet along the way. Fair winds!
This video is a gem. Congrats for the passage and for the great parenting! It was honestly so awesome to watch. Little Dean will surely grow up with a heck of a story to tell and with an adventurous spirit, which is the key to a happy life. That's how I wanna grow up my kids as well, in the future :)
Thank you so much, Enrico! Not sure Dean appreciates it yet, but hoping he will one day!
what a lifestyle! I have so many questions, is the passage so safe to cross that families are doing it now?? did you need Canadian permission? do you think it will open to trade soon? stay safe y`all! hope to do this myself someday
Thanks for your comment! The NWP is still risky, but it seems to be open almost every summer these days. You currently do not need permission to navigate the waters, but do need to clear with Canadian customs and immigration to anchor or go ashore, and some of the local communities have their own regulations. There are a very few freighters using the route, but deliveries of fuel and supplies to the villages get through each summer. fair winds!
I really loved to watch your documentary...today my wife asked me what i wish for Xmas...i said "i need nothing"...i sure just changed my mind, i would love to read "Thicker than Ice" and keep it in my little boat library.
That's great to hear! Hope you enjoy it. Happy holidays!
Thank you for sharing your amazing family trip ! ... still dreaming of it ! ... can't wait for the next épisode !
Our pleasure, thanks for watching!
For us not brave enough, For us without the confidence to start. God bless youtube.
Hey folks .😊. We as a family watched this magnificent voyage and we went in feet first, the Books called "Thicker than ice " By John pennington!!!.😊
That is awesome, thank you!
Welldone Dean ! I sailed with my parents too when I was your age. (at the NorthSea) I am now 71.
Wonderful ❤
Thank you 😄
Been waiting for someone to record a passage up there. This is simply a bonus!
Hi Jon! Glad we could help. No doubt our friends on SV Lumi are doing a more thorough job of it this year, though 😜
What an incredible and bold journey. I lived in Resolute for many years. Sailor too, tried for the passage in 2008 in a 26' Balboa! We didn't make it. Departed Rimouski. Turned back down to St Anthony's after a bad gale beat up the CCG Admunsen and our little boat, mid Davis Strait. We lost our tender, sea drogue, radar mast, suffered delaminate and leaking (FG) Sailed her down the Strait of Belle Isle and eventually sold her at Little Port Harmon, Stevensville. Great trip otherwise!
Wow! Love the "great trip otherwise" after what must have been a terrifying experience. Glad you made it back south safely. Wishing you fair winds in the future!
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx you too skipper
Adorable having your child narrating. Priceless cuteness. Loved it! Would be great talking about the friends you met along the way.
Great idea!! Glad you enjoyed
epic family!
For all who find this magnificent film as charming as our family did. We heartily recommend POP'S book that gives a magical back story to how hard things can be to string something like this together! . Fortunately young Dean has clever mom and pop too and they found a great yacht with a poor engine.. Luckily for mom ,pop and Dean there was a lovely optimistic cousin who cherished the concept of crossing the Atlantic in a yacht with no engine 😊. After all this the North west passage beckoned.... And what a great back story to this film the book makes. The book is "Thicker than ice" by John A Pennington!. We bought ours of Amazon. Its such a compelling readalong with the TH-cam film 😊. It's Available at all great bookshops.. We all need a Mom and Pop in our lives.. Not forgetting a Quadermarange 😊😊😊
Thank you! Really appreciate your kind words; so glad you enjoyed them both.
Your dad was a mad man and wasn't bothered by you dying a cold 🥶 death. 😂
Came here to hear Dean's version after reading Thicker Than Ice. Both are great! I loved seeing the visuals and people from the book, but I highly highly recommend everyone go get and read a copy - John's account of the preparation and passage is magnificent!
Thank you, Nick!
Ok it's been 4 months when are you going to be posting updates
The story is very enduring as told by your son. Excellent video of an amazing journey.
Thank you very much!
Our family bought this YT channels book ! "Thicker than ice" . Its a charming bookend to a growing families filmography 😊. Would truly recommend all who find this families expedition amazing to buy the book as it fills in the spaces in between and at times reminds us all how fragile lives can be while achieving amazing things. At same time as realising 100% of the time mom knows best 😊❤🫡👏🤲
Thank you so much!! And yes, you're correct. Mom knows best 😜
What an adventure. What class of boat is she?
Thanks! She's a Koopmans 39'.
Thanks. great family. Great boat. Fair winds to you.
Our pleasure!
B.t.w 😊. Does Dean still eat copious amounts of A'ggis ?
Unfortunately, it's not easy to find where we are now. Maybe an Internet order next time we have an address?
liked and subbed just from the title..
Outstanding
Thanks!!
You guys are amazing, so grateful to have met you! Everyone here, grab a copy of Thicker Than Ice, it’s a hilariously inspiring yet relatable read, we couldn’t put it down!
Thank you Allison!
I hope your kiddo remember how wonderful his parents are.
Thank you! He went to school in Alaska for a few months and now has a new appreciation of the saying life 😆
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx I' am an elementary school teacher and I' am sure there is no place on earth you learn as much as on a journey like this.👍
Just watched again ! It's almost like our families favourite BBC Documentary 😊. ❤
Haha, except filmed with a cell phone ;). Glad you enjoyed.
We just bought Pop's book🫡. The mom and dad nourished young chap and he truly has a positive outlook,so good job mom and pop😊 🫡✊️🫵❤
Thank you; hope you enjoy the book too!
We just watched this majestic film once Again. The joy in young chaps face upon launching Quadermarange 💥. Everyone needs a Quadermarange now and again 😊
Yep, thanks for watching! We still have Quaddy and it still brings a smile for every launching 😁
@JohnPennington-xx8qx We just ordered "Thicker than ice" . Money well spent 😊🫡🫡
It's great that Dean has these videos, and a book, to look back on as he goes through life. Much better than a photo album.
yes, certainly hoping he appreciates them when he's older.
What time of year did you go through the passage
It's only open some years, and usually mid August to mid September
@JohnPennington-xx8qx Looks like a beautiful, but dangerous voyage. Just wondering if there was a time when there was no ice, but I think that would be wishful thinking
The sea ice melts each year in a slightly different pattern but last year we had ice in Baffin Bay and Victoria Straight. The rest was relatively clear, aside from the ubiquitous ice bergs from Newfoundland to Bellot Straight
That was amazing. Great video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Finished your book, what a great read. Awesome adventure.
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words.
Cool video. How do you like Echopilot? Was it invaluable navigating the passage?
Didn't use it, just a regular downward-facing sounder. The ice was pretty hard on anything sticking out of the hull, though.
Wow! Show us more please.
Great idea, a tiller instead a wheel.😊😊❤
haha sometimes the oldest ideas are the best!
Wow!
What an amazing treat to view this documentary. So well done. This should win awards.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it; no awards but your kind words are plenty. Fair winds!
Absolutely wonderful !!! "Push Pop push... Reel Dean reel" .... now that's teamwork.... also .. gotta love that pilot house !!!
Thanks Brian! Yes, pilot house was a lifesaver, especially when there was any wind chill. Fair winds!
What a cool adventure. Thank you for taking me along. PS your boy is absolutely adorable 🥰
Thanks Helen! Glad you enjoyed.
superb story telling. Amazing experience. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
again! loved it all over! So how many kids went through the north West Passage in 2023?
Hi Kris! We didn't see any others--not on sailboats, anyway. I think he needs more socialization now to make up for it...
Hey John enjoyed your video loved the narration from your son. Quick question did you guys spent time prepping your boat in Wickford marina in the winter of 2020 ?. We bought our boat then and spent our first winter there and remember a young couple with a young kid on an aluminum boat we were just wondering if that was you guys. You definitively looked like a family on a mission with that boat now I can see what the mission was :) congrats !
Yes! That was us; we spent three winters at that marina and did all our welding work in the water there. Small sailing world! Hope you're doing well and enjoying boat life on Evergreen--love the boat name!
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx That's amazing !. My wife is the one who recognize you guys. That's awesome to know you guys looked like the real deal and now we know you indeed were the real deal northwest passage is the ultimate technical sail !. Hats off to you guys !. Will be following your next adventures !. Cheers from Evergreen if you are ever in Boston let us know dinner on us ! :)
Thank you for the invite! We might be back that way, but by airplane next time 😁
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx I am an airline pilot Logan is my second home haha I will pick you guys up :)
