Fused Ankle
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 พ.ย. 2019
The decision to have an ankle fused to relieve pain was one taken with little knowledge of what to expect afterwards. There is information on the internet about the initial post surgery expectations, but little on how life is affected after the cast comes off and 'normal' life is expected to resume. I live a relatively active life and thought it would be interesting to document the effects the fusion has on my typical activities. I am doing this to help others who may be in a similar situation, and for the fun fact that I have never produced anything like this before.

The first part of a series of videos showing my personal experiences pre and post ankle fusion.
Had my surgery about a month ago and I’m still in the no weight bearing stage
1 week postop here. Recovery is very slow for me
This was 4 years ago; I'd like to know what's going on now. I need to know....
Why didn't you have an ankle replacement?
had the fusion 6 weeks ago, and cast off and my second day in a moonboot, I HATE it!! I feel more comfortable without, but worried as surgeon says could snap screws, etc. Im a keen cyclist and have been depressed as with the cast on I felt quite good, when it came off I feel vulnerable? and worried to put any pressure. Maybe its just too soon? I wanted to be the guy who healed super quick and was back on the bike. Did you find it hard when the cast came off? Im quite depressed with this infinity
Hey buddy, I’m almost 4 months from my angle fusion I’m just starting to walk without the air cast I have the crutches still very painful. Lots of swelling too. I’m hoping it’s over soon.
@@MarkGlover-re5we Thanks for reply, Its been 9 weeks now and I apply Ice my every evening, I have been trying to walk without crutches and find I have an ingrained limp! I have tried walking backwards! seems to help not limp, Im still pushing hard on getting back, even did 20 minutes on bike rollers, I havent really had too much pain, thankfully. I hope your recovery goes well, I see the specialist in another two weeks, for xray etc
Thanks for your videos, they are a great reference for us going through the ankle fusion process.
4/16/2024 I've watch all your video and what to thank you for your time making. Getting my left fuse friday
Also 6 months after ankle fusion and have no problems at all, 15 000 steps a day on concrete floor at work, no pain at all !
Hi buddy just wanted to know don’t you have any problems climbing up and down stairs.
@@MarkGlover-re5we Not at all, but going down stairs is a little akward on your heel. But no pain at all. Do you have problems in the stairs ?
@@patrikkagstrom2393 i’m finally starting to put weight on my foot. I was just curious if you had any problems going up and down the stairs I’m glad you’re doing better, buddy. My thoughts and prayers are with you but at least I don’t have any more pain at this stage, keep in touch, your Canadian brother
@@MarkGlover-re5weI see you here my friend. How are you doing now? Hope you are recovering well
@@Cgeophrey I went to my first day of physiotherapy that was pretty tough. I still have a lot of pain when walking, but I think that’s normal. I really do appreciate your friendship. May God bless your family with long life and good health.
Up date now 2024
Thank you for making these videos. It is helpful. I have a question for you: I am 15 weeks post-surgery. I started walking without the boot 10 weeks after surgery. I wonder, for how long do we still feel pain? I am walking with the support of 1/2 crutch, but I still feel pain. How long after surgery did you stop feeling pain while walking? Thanks
Hi bro, I’m just wondering if you don’t mind me asking how’s the quality of life after an ankle fusion? Also, do you have pain when you’re walking? And how long can you walk without the pain? Thanks buddy for the educational inspirational tutorial of your journey with ankle fusion. God bless.
Hi buddy thanks for all the blogs, I’m so nervous I have a ankle fusion schedule next month. I’ve had four surgeries to repair my ankle from a traumatic accident at work I had a 9000 beam flip off a trailer and land right on my ankle crushing it. I’m blessed that I I still have my ankle but I am very concerned about ankle fusion. I’ve heard some horrible stories that the pain you go through after an ankle fusion.
Hey buddy, I’m just wondering how are you doing with the pain and do you have any videos of you walking? Do you walk with a limp. I appreciate your blog.
Hey buddy, thank you for for the videos. They’re very educational within a month I’m supposed to be going for an ankle fusion. I’m so nervous because of the pain that people go through the recovery. How was your recovery? Did you have much pain?
Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I am so happy to see that you are doing well. I have been avoiding ankle fusion for 25+ years and have had 6 ankle surgeries. Fusion is now my only option and seeing success stories like yours really helps.
I have had a ankle fusion operation last year .one year in January 2024 ..I had server Athrutus and server Deformity in my ankle I use a stick ..
9 months after the surgery and 1 year before that I broke both my shin bones completely in half. It has taken a long time and hard work and a LOT of metal in my ankle but I can finally hike and jog. Bunch of people said it couldn't be done but I am living proof.
You are able to hike and jog with a fused ankle? That's wonderful.
lunges? squats?.... or is it impossible.
I know it’s 3 years ago but just wanted to say thank you for this update. I’m three weeks post op and wearing the boot. My surgeon here in Western Australia took the cast off after one week. My ankle is healing well. Anyway mate, thank you. Hope you’re still doing well. Lucien.
What type of ankle fusion was it? I need to have the Subtaler and Talanvicular bones fused together in my foot.
Thank you so much for sharing your ankle fusion journey. I am 5 weeks post op and it feels longer. I have horse and hope I can ride again. When I wake up each morning and my foot hurts and I can hardly wait for my cast to be removed on 8\8 and xrays. I have had 3 scooter accidents Landing upright on my fused foot. Had to check on my lame horse and feed the dog, etc. I can't stand crutches and crawl down the stairs because I almost fell with my crutches.
I may need to have ankle fusion what type fusion was it?
Your videos have been invaluable, thanks so much for taking the time!
What is the best walking shoe after Fusion ?
I am 6 weeks post op and just had plaster taken off and had boot fitted. TBH I was a bit nervous about the next stage This is a really helpful post, thanks.
Thanks for the post, had my right ankle fused after a van pulled out in front of my motorbike. Week 4 atm so not much going on other than rest. Slight complication, paralysis of big toe for upwards movement, this is unstable and causes the most of my current issues as the toe just hands, it’s numb and feels hideous.. Personally, I just need to focus on being able to ride again. Great videos, thanks for posting.
My foot toes are still numb ..4 months
Hey buddy, I just want to know if you’re toes are still numb. I’m four months out my toes are numb. How’s your walking? Do you still have pain?
French guy who got his left ankle fused and will get his right ankle fused soon, thank you so much for your videos. It really is hard to find stories of people’s lives after getting ankle fusions so I’m very thankful for your content.
I live in France and am planning to have my ankle fused. May I ask where you had yours fused? I live in Annecy. Best of luck.
I have still numbness front
Hi Andy, how has the fusion impacted shifting gears on motorbike? I am currently holding off a fusion and living with pain because I am afraid I won't be able to ride again. 😢
Have a friend who has an ankle fusion, rides bikes all the time. I quizzed hin about shifting and he said it was simply changing the knee position otherwise he is perfectly functional years in. He is a paraglider and hikes upwards of 500m plus vertical to get to launch. Im looking into getting my right fused so I had all the same questions.
I’m 12 post op and Iv started walking with out the boot Iv a lot of pain in my foot More than before the op Swelling is bad too, but it goes down over night It’s a little worrying, but I’ll keep trying and see what it’s like in a month
Cheers my friend, very reasuring as have just made the tough decision to have left ankle fused after many years of grief. I am a swimmer and worried about the drag factor. Might have to sacrifice the swim to be able to walk and golf again 🤞 Best wishes Jim
I am at 7 weeks now your blog has been really useful
Hello. Thank you for this video. I had my left ankle fused last September 2022. Can I ask how many months before your swelling and pain completely disappeared?
You've mentioned a couple of times about motorcycle riding with a fused ankle. I have not found your video nor any other mention of this activity on any other channel. How is it going with a left ankle fusion and motorcycle riding?
Hi, So glad to have found your great video's as I'm due in for op in Sept. Fantastic to hear your views and experience on cycling as that is my life at the moment as I can hardly walk due to the pain. Can't stand up for long on bike for hills etc so have had to lower gearing etc but I'm optimistic now that I will be in a better position post op than before. Noticed your HOKA trainers in one of the other vids, are these rocker shoes? Do these help on your fused ankle or are normal shoes ok? Have to wear safety shoes in work so I can see this being an issue but I suppose until it's all healed I won't know for sure as we are all different. Hope your recovery is still going well.
Your calm intelligent concise explanations through this process has been extremely helpful and inspiring. Excellent job on your documentary. Bravo and thank you.
That boot seems the cats ass for me so I can take it off and let my leg breath. Getting fusion on June 6th.
It’s been 6 weeks post op. due to have cast off on 28 th March 2022 .really looking forward to that.it’s suprising how much you can and can’t do with the use of only one leg but I’m managing quite well. I’ve put no weight at all on the right leg so I’ve been a good boy so hopefully the X-ray will show I’m making good progress. I’ve found that your videos have been more informative than any others I’ve come across on TH-cam and look forward to your next one. Thanks very much.
Re cycling, I had a left ankle fusion seven years ago and like you I found it didn't cause any problems at all with cycling. The pedal just rotates to suit the changed rotation in the ankle. I have just had my right ankle fused and am on the exercise bike as part of my weight bearing recovery process (with a moon boot). I find it good because I can adjust the pedal resistance to suit.
is there anyone who has been able to surf after an ankle fusion? cant find any details of it anywhere. It will be a sick joke if a surfing accident forced me to give up surfing forever. Havent had the fusion yet, but told today that its the best way forward for my quality of life :(
Thanks. Week 10 here after fusion too. Still have boot but doc appt next week & hoping to walk without boot. Are u using a walker when walking? And what type of shoe
Thank you for your post. I am at week 9. No weight bearing still in my cast.. anxious for the boot to walk again!
I’m on day 2 of recovery from the dynanail arthrodesis. This is the worst pain I’ve ever been in.
Quick question. Could I ask you what daily footwear you now wear (post op)
Just found this short video and found it really helpful. I had my left ankle fused two weeks ago (18/9/21) and as an active person who is a keen road cyclist who uses shoes and cleats I found your video very reassuring. I will keep my eye out for any others you upload.
How's your ankle now
Show me ur leg
😳
Will I be able to walk without limbing
I'm now 1 month after ankle fusion. Can I walk with out support. What exercises u suggest
My fusion is in a few weeks. Really helpful video thank you.
