My teacher! He and Harmon came to the NAU Summer music camp in the 1970s and 80s and I attended his Bass master classes as my own teacher, a Juliard grad, was the camp Viola teacher and I saw him 50 weeks a year. Anyway, Gary Karr had some amazing fingerboard exercises that were EXACTLY the same ones I learned from my teacher so I wrote a report for Viola master class that went like this. Gary Karr practices and teaches the EXACT same left hand and Bow control calisthenics as Mr. Gruber. Ha! I loved Gary's energy and I know he misses Kousi, his beloved Amati Bass. My teacher, Mr. Bill Bagwell had played Sax with Gary's Dad back in Philadelphia I think. So Bill had an Amati Viola and that's weird because Gary's Bass looked a lot like Bill's Amati. That was one beautiful black bass!

I was blessed to have heard Lynn Harrell perform in Ithaca, New York, close to where I grew up learning to play the cello. He was so humble and gracious when I congratulated him. I also cherish his recordings of the Beethoven Cello Sonatas. It's amazing that his body held up in his 70s, such that he could still perform the Lalo Cello Concerto with such power and rich tone. RIP, good sir!!

Such a great piece for an Opus 1 (written when Rachmaninov was 18). I really enjoyed playing it.

Even at his old age, you can still hear remnants of his outstanding glorious musicality

The Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No 1 is one of my favorites! I heard it for the first time when the University of Utah Ballet performed to this concerto! That was in 1959 or 1960!! I was mesmerized by both the ballet and the concerto! I immediately went out and bought a record of this piece!! Yes, not many people whom I know are familiar with it! It's a thrilling piece! Thank you, Alon Goldstein, for your comments and your wonderful performance of this piece!

It's a shame how classical music is fading against music that does not encompass the greatness and grandeur of this musical, centuries old, genre through all its stages, and therefore, great orchestras and soloists are forgotten. How many know or remember this great cellist; Lynn Harrell?

a great loss to the musical world - I heard him play Elgar in Sydney in the 60's and again in South Bank in the 80's. A true master of the 'cello. It takes a true master to play three encores - such humility.
