Transpeed Firenza at Cadwell CTCRC April 2024 Race 1
Well, that was brief! A tyre wall got dislodged on Lap 2, inititially covered by waved Yellows, then a lap later followed by SC signs (but no sign of the SC for 2 laps), then finally a Red flag - and that was that. 2 actual laps of racing for a 400 mile round trip from Brighton. Mmmm. Still, the 'ol car ran well.

Historic Saloon Car Racing! Well now, I did expect to get mugged by the V8's at the start - but the real battle was with Myles Castaldini's nifty yellow/green Davrian, who kept me honest to the chequered flag. Strange engine misfire in the early laps didn't help my cause, but seemed to clear after a while - no idea what that was all about!

Our scheduled qualifying session got red-flagged after two laps - twice! As a result, the organisers decided to offer us a single lap shootout during the lunch break. I have to say, it was a brilliant idea - it could catch on. I loved it!

First time ever to race my Dad's original and unique 1964 Mini Cooper S in wet weather. I was only seven years old when Dad started racing it in 1966, and watched him clock up over 400 awards over the next 20 years! This car has great meaning to our family - so I was treading VERY carefully ;-) Unfortunately a Safety Car had to be deployed after lap 6 due to a stationery car just after the pit ...

As usual you and the old girl as one, sadly not for long enough which was a shame but I saw you got some silverware. The old girl is still good to watch ,sounds great. Sorry I missed you before I left but didn't want to bug you on your wind down after the race. Really nice to meet all of you and one day I hope to see you again. At least Mike got 6 laps in . No race 2 for you then ? Thanks for subscribing to my channel.
Looks like a ton of fun, a very basic clean racer !
Looked very slippery
Hi Tony , nice to finally meet you yesterday and yes it was really cold. You and the car went well looked good on a superb track. I'll look out for the race coverage which I know got cut short .
Likewise, it was good to see you at Cadwell, and thanks for your support. Shame the race got cut short, but the video of it is here somewhere...! Freezing wind didn't make for great lap times, but at least I was warmer than the spectators 😂
Superb!! Could listen to that all day long!
Well done Tony, looked and sounded great other than the miss below 4k, but sounds like you sorted it :)
Nice race Tony shame you lost ground with the misfire. Looked hard to handle in the closing stages with such a fast track and corners but you and the car are as one . Can't wait for race 2 !
Sadly, no race 2 video. The GoPro said "SD card error"! Dammit 😢
@@Firenzaman That's technology for you however see you got 2nd behind the beast Baby Bertha suited to Snetterton. I take it you are on for Cadwell Sunday ?
@@leodis55 Yes, looking forward to Cadwell - one of my favourite circuits!
Chugging into full rich. Very odd. TPS/sensor/map site problem. Apart from that, sounded great, driven great, so nice to see.
Yes, very odd. During the break we excersised all the loom connectors, also found a collapsed fuel hose between the swirl pot return to tank. It ran glitch free in 2nd race...
Shame about the misfire/whatever that was, but great to see you in action, especially with baby Bertha at the beginning.
Hi Tony it looks like you are down to race at Cadwell 27th/28th April 2024 is that correct ? and if so I will try to be there .
Yes, hopefully will be there. If all goes well at Snetterton this weekend 🤞
Good result from yourself and the car . keep the vids coming
Fantastic, proper old racing car and beautifully driven
THE TRANSPEED FIRENZA!!!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 Oh, the memories!! Isn’t this the car that was on that TV drama series with Pete Baldwin’s BDA Mini? Love it!!!
Yes, it's the car seen in BBC "Driving Ambition". We did a day's filming at a garage near Lewisham, then 2 days filming at Brands, then 3 days filming at West Malling airfield. Happy days!
Sounds sweet. Music to my ears.
The late Brian Jones the voice of Brands Hatch may he be resting peacefully forever missed.
I'd be very interested in the number achieved, and the spec on the engine. More details please Sir.
We saw 322bhp on this dyno, but the atmospheric corrected figure came out around 315. It is a lovely engine to drive, with a pretty wide torque / power band. It will pull cleanly from 1,000rpm all the way up to 8,000. This engine was originally modified and built by Bill Blysenstein at DTV, Shepreth in 1985, and is today maintained by Anderson Racing Engines, Somerset, UK. The block is a standard Vauxhaul "slant-four" as used in the original Firenza / Magnum saloons (and Bedford CF trucks!). The main bearing caps have additional steel straps, and the bores have been replaced with "top hat" liners. The crank was manufactured by Pheonix, from billet EN60 steel, with Carrillo con rods, and light alloy pistons. The cylinder head is Vauxhall HS 16v, belt-driven twin overhead camshaft (as used in the 1980's Chevette HSR rally cars), with Cosworth dual valve springs and shimmed tappets. Only down side, is its weight!! Heavy enough to bend my engine crane - lol!!
Tony now looking like his dad, Jack with whom I competed in hillclimbs & races in the late 60,s early 70,s.I believe his old Cooper S has been recommissioned & raced again which is great!
Ha haa, yes Paul, you're not the only one to spot the similarities! .. and yes, Jack's old mini is still going strong in the hands of my brothers. What car did you race?
My 2nd car when was 18, 1800 single zenith carburettor Firenza. Next car Magnum.
Brilliant racing car the Firenza, remember seeing Gerry Marshall on the limit with these in the 70,s at Brands, and enjoy seeing them just as much now
Can't stand people posting fake cars. Pathetic
Brian's stentorian voice was the backbone of every race at Brands for so long.
Noice.
W hey! That was fun!
Thankyou so much, brought back memories of my dad and me in his HC magnum estate, going to Thruxton and Brands watching the Firenza's and HS Chevette's.
Remember a magazine around 1975 with a pic of firenza droopsnoot , an absolute stunner, great shape of car even now 🙂
i remember Transpeed based in Hove many years ago
Sounds sweet, and great driving too
Thankyou! It is huge fun to drive!
I remember watching Gerry Marshall's Baby Bertha back in the day, seeing your car brings back memories 😊
Very nice driving 😃👍
You are trying hard there ....great !
Scary on slicks 😲
Nicely avoided.
i have followed this car for many years, and it is so great to hear it again in 2023 weel done tony
Thanks Peter! Are you going to be at Vaux Valves, Donington?
Reminds me of the Big Gerry Marshall onboard with commentary when he was in Baby Bertha 7-8 and in to top.
Ha ha! Yes the wobbly Betamax video is rather reminiscent of the late 70's / early 80's. This was filmed before I discovered that "smoother = quicker" 😂
Nice one Tony it's good to see the big American bricks being passed by a little mini. Which do you prefer front or rear wheel drive ?
Lovely car mate. I wish I’d kept mine now….20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.
The Cortina was close to hitting the crashed IMP and Anglia - they were slow with the yellow flags there
Yes, yellows a bit slow there, which is very rare, as BARC marshals are usually fabulous 👌
You can clearly see the double yellow flags waving well before they get to the corner and at the marshal's post round into the down hill ( posts 2 & 3 I believe ) before the incident.
Wow ,that was exciting..Is that 1070 Cooper s as in 1964 spec or plus 1275 cc? Hairy moments from Andy Jones at Paddock..
Excellent video John, thanks for a great race, the 4 of us had a good dice. Looking forward to the next one.
Hi James! Yes John really enjoyed a good dice - but he says he wants to beat you next time too! 😂. Seriously, though, this is superb racing, and it's a real pleasure to see these 1960s cars in action! Our Dad, who owned the "CPJ" Mini from new, would so chuffed to know it's still racing! 😀
awesome batttle ! really enjoyed thanks for posting 👍🏁
Oh mate - You've got the skills! That was brilliant! Good job dispatching that #85 Nova - it looked about as stable and in control as my Ex!!
Lucky lady bet she enjoyed that .😁
Yes, my daughter had been lobbying me for a track day for a while now, and my son-in-law! I think they enjoyed the experience! The most common comment from all passengers is that they find the brakes are surprisingly powerful, and cornering G's more than expected.
You got better and better!
Thanks! It has taken me a while to learn how to use these new Hoosier radial tyres. I still prefer the old Avon crossply but they're no longer available 😢
Superb Tony
You were going well too, Mostyn 👌
Hi Tony , the old girl does good again with you at the helm . Looks and sounds great as usual.👍
Saw your cooper S in my recommended and have thoroughly enjoyed watching your video's, please do upload more.
Balls of steel on the brakes, fantastic. 2:14 what a fantastic double overtake by the red and white livery. 4:41 lovely setup for the pass. 5:30 closed in on him so much into turn 1, made him hug the inside by getting next to him by being better on the brakes turn 2 and executed turn 3. Simply lovely.
What a joy to watch, thanks for sharing. I'm wondering, how much HP do these mini coopers have? They're like souped up go karts without the grip, I love it.
👍
Nice to see you out again Tony . I take it the actual race is to follow soon. I will get to see you at some point in the future. I went to the BTCC at Donington Park this year but it's not as good to me now and would rather have been watching your race !!
Thanks! Yes race vt to follow... In the meantime, I should be at Brands this weekend, and again 15/16 July...
