I bought a 1995 (the first year of Tacoma production) that made the same exact noise. Back then, the internet was much smaller, so I didn't know how common this problem was. After several years of hasseling with the dealership and not really ever fixing the problem, I bought a 2001 Tundra and after 13 years, traded it back on a 2014 Tacoma TRD. After about a month, incredibly, this very same noise started occuring in the vehicle-especially on windy days, or driving the truck of 70 mph. The problem is inconsistent and ranges from barely noticable to unbearable. The guys down at the dealership are very non-chalant about the whole thing, and they insist the whole thing is non existent, or rarely occurs in a very smalll sample of trucks. You also get a dose of "hey this is the most reliable, highest resale value truck on the planet, so just deal with it. So after being a loyal toyota truck guy since 1988, I bought a Chevy Silverado, which so far has been awesome. I do like the Tacoma, and my Toyotas have been mechanically sound and reliable, but their failure to fix that noise is inexcusable. Also..gas mileage tends to be much lower than advertised. Be very wary about sinking $30-40K into a Tacoma.
