Likewise. Somebody did their research or was old enough to know the real deal. I was REALLY into disco in the 70s, and while there were like 100 versions of the hustle out there (East Cost Hustle, Latin Hustle, Couple Hustle) this is the closest to the one we West Coasters did. I'm not always sure what I'm looking at when I see some of The Hustle tutorial videos online.

@@joewhitehead3@joewhitehead3 You're right; even with all the racist pushback, "A Patch of Blue" was successful in the South. It was more a case of people liking the movie and its theme (it's essentially harmless and non-threatening) but having a problem with the kiss. Given that it featured Poitier in another saintly role, even in those provinces that demanded the excising of the offending kiss, the film was well received. But in those days, nearly all films with integrated casts courted opposition in the South. But in most cases, the films, if the films had merit, prospered despite the controversy surrounding them. It's like with all aspects of social change in America even today...the initial negative reaction of the ignorant is ultimately never indicative of the larger, more egalitarian mindset of a civilized populace.

Yeah, kubrick was still on the horizon, three years on from this. As intense as he was known to be, i dont believe he put nicole through anything like the routine shelly had to endure for the shining. Kubrick is my absolute favorite director so im not complaining, i feel for shelley and i know she struggled in later years. Shes remarlable in portrait of a lady, her idiosyncrasies are present but controlled and the movie is tremendously underrated i think its superior to Campion's future best picture winner Power Of The Dog and equal to or slightly better than The Piano. But those are three great films

    • @dreamsarewhatlecinemaisfor

Definitely agree that this is one of Campion's most sorely underrated and under-seen films. Also, I'm inclined to agree about Kubrick. While almost everyone from Malcolm McDowell to Keir Dullea has commented on the director's emotional remoteness and task-master perfectionism, Duvall seems to have come under a special kind of abuse. Perhaps personal, for in interviews, Kubrick was just not very kind when speaking of her.
