      This is such an original comment. It's so original, that I already responded to another comment on this video 2 weeks ago with: "Well, technically it's the drum break from "When The Levee Breaks" plus some turntable scratching and a hi hat. I like when a drum break or a drum solo kicks off the whole album, I guess. And for the Beastie Boys one, for me it sets the tone - there are so many breakbeats and samples in Licensed To Ill." @@charlesmichael190 Apologies, it's actually a testament to how good that drum track was played/recorded, so good that it has "found a way" to be in such a compilation with a "set of rules" that would have rendered impossible if it wasn't reused in another record. A couple recommendations I have are Cry Sugar by Hudson Mohawke, a little more than a few seconds but TPaB by Kendrick Lamar, the Fez soundtrack by Disasterpiece, Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, the lit-cigarette nostalgia of Birdie by Slaughter Beach Dog, Jyocho’s Guide and Devote EP, and Music for Bugs by camiidae, to varying levels of effectiveness. My favorite album, Familiaris by Snooze, also has a cool start, but I’d say that about the first maybe minute or so Edit because how tf did I forget City of Evil by Avenged Sevenfold

      @@charlesmichael190 totally :D I probably should’ve added (but I was tired at the time) that part of the reason Familiaris’s start is so cool is because it’s a perfect loop from the end of the album. In fact, you can put the whole album on loop and the only time there’s a real break between songs is right in the middle, between tracks 5 and 6 of the 10-track album Also, I left off The Beautiful Cycle of Terminal by Jyocho, which has a beautiful first track that sets the tone for the album really well. I guess I felt I couldn’t add two recommendations from the same band, but TBCoT is my favorite Jyocho album (and Sugoi Kawaii Jyocho, the 6th track, is my all-time favorite song). Idk if you could tell but I like math rock lmao

    I have a playlist dedicated to the first tracks of studio albums (not counting compilations) as I believe they gave a hard first impression of an artist, even though there's more to them than the opening second or song. But some of these that I recognized the artists, even without knowing the songs, I can tell was emblematic of their style. Great choices, maybe up for a part 2? ;)

    • @charlesmichael190
      @charlesmichael190 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Please send that playlist to me when you can! I'd love to get into that. I firmly agree - a first track of a first side is indelibly your first impression of the album and of the artist/group. There's a lot more, but hearing those first notes for the first time is quite magical sometimes. I don't know if I'll make a part 2 - lots of people have already made plenty of videos that included just about every album I didn't include, and I want there to be other things on my TH-cam channel. It took enough time for me to think about my favorite side-1-track-1s for this video alone! But again, I'd love to see what you've got in your playlist. Maybe it'll give me inspiration!

      Criminally underrated. I know their music got used in a couple movies and TV shows in 2007 and 08, and they gained traction in that period, but their self titled album and Strike Gently need to be critically reassessed. Donald Cumming is up there in terms of great melody makers, but unfortunately his work gets severely overlooked.

    Vacant World by The Jacks is an absolutely goated album that im really surprised would be mentioned in a video like this. My vinyl copy is the prized jewel of my library and no one but me seems to know or care about it. Please go listen to it!!

    • @charlesmichael190
      @charlesmichael190 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are amazing for that. Vacant World is such an obscure gem that I'm absolutely glad I found when I was listening to a lot of Japanese music in late 2020 (when I was also listening to a lot of KPM library albums!) I love the drum rolls on the beginning of "Marianne", and that's such a standout track, so I had to put it in! In Japan in the late '60s, there was a growing music genre called "Group Sounds" (some sources attribute its development to The Beatles' arrival in Tokyo in July 1966 - 58 years ago now) and The Jacks were one of many of those kinds of groups -- there was also The Spiders, The Tigers, The Jaguars, Zoo Nee Voo, Adams, The Mops, The Golden Cups, The Wild Ones, Jackey Yoshikawa and his Blue Comets... Please go listen to all of them! There's a great TH-cam channel called GSiloveyou which i'll link below. It's an absolute gold mine for this amazing genre of music that, perhaps due to the language barrier, gets overlooked a lot of the time. www.youtube.com/@GSiloveyou2017/videos

      JOHN HENRY!!!! I always associate "Subliminal" with the live performance of it at the very start of the Gigantic film - it not only kicks off the album it's from, but it also kicks off that great film. Plus, it kind of makes sense from a musical standpoint. The instruments kick in one at a time, starting with the accordion (which lets you know that TMBG haven't changed their musical sensibilities), and then the drums (letting you know that TMBG have a backing band now) - and then the bass and guitars kick in. And what a first impression on the lyrical front - "as I got hit by a car, there was a message for me". Classic Linnell.

      Well, technically it's the drum break from "When The Levee Breaks" plus some turntable scratching and a hi hat. I like when a drum break or a drum solo kicks off the whole album, I guess. And for the Beastie Boys one, for me it sets the tone - there are so many breakbeats and samples in Licensed To Ill. Paul's Boutique is my real favorite out of the Beastie Boys' albums, but that album's opener, "To All The Girls", has a really slow fade-up of that Idris Muhammad sample. It's nice and interesting in a dynamic sense, but that instant gratification when you put on "Rhymin' & Stealin'" is why Licensed To Ill made this video. Not that a slow fade-up isn't nice (I even included Counting Crows' August And Everything After for its slow introduction - and as I said, I think "To All The Girls" is interesting in a dynamic sense). Check Your Head's first track is "Jimmy James", which starts with a Cheap Trick sample: "This next one is the first song on our new album!" and then the drums and bass kick in. That one I would have definitely included for how meta it is, but I limited myself to only one song per artist. Ill Communication, "Sure Shot" - that one is just a great song. The way it opens, with the dog barking and then the flute sample, is also a great opener. Now that I think about it, every Beastie Boys album opens in a really interesting way. Sorry I couldn't put them all in!

      Yes, it's a bit nerdy. But I thought the video was worth making. I don't plan on doing "response videos" like this often.

      Thank you! It's quite surreal to see this video gaining traction, I guess just through the algorithm???

    Apparently youtube really wanted me to see a video with 30 views where a man critically analyzes a separate video

    UPDATE, JUNE 10, 2024: Hi everyone, Charles here. Well, it's been a full year since I put up this trailer, and still no documentary. "What's going on, Charles?" Well... I started this project on June 21, 2022, just because I wanted to do a little retrospective on this channel on an album I liked as a kid - actually quite a few of them. I thought it would be quickly released within a year's time. Little did I know that the direction this project went was vastly different than just a little video review. This became a full-fledged documentary, and through this project I met the person who became my research partner Tex, and I made so many great connections with so many people who were directly involved with They Might Be Giants' career. Artists and fans alike. A lot of people are very passionate about this album, whether they worked on it or they grew up with it, and I wish to share that passion with this documentary. The list of people who are directly involved with this project has greatly expanded since June 8, 2023, when I posted this trailer; you can also expect to see Devery Doleman, Sean Greathead, Matt Owens talking about "Letter Shapes" and "I C U", and this documentary will reunite the 5-person team of Asterisk LLC by the time of summer 2004: Richard O'Connor and Brian O'Connell, Alexandra Reshanov, Karen Isaacs (nee Squillaro), Winnie Tom. There will also be a section in this documentary where people who grew up with Here Come The ABCs share their childhood memories. For those that have been patiently waiting, ALBUMS OF ALL TIME episode 1 is coming. Due to the depth and breadth of research that has been conducted for this project, as well as the scope of this project being way larger than I ever foresaw it to be, this documentary is not coming out in 2023. (After all, 2023 is over!) So in 2024, I've really started buckling down, for what will hopefully be a release in 2025. I'm doing a lot of the video editing work myself at the moment. Please keep in mind that I'm working on other projects as well. This is on the top of the priority list, and it is surely in the pipeline. Thank you all for your continued interest, I am truly flattered that a lot of people are looking forward to my project. I will see an end to it. TL;DR: This might be coming out in 2025. "We've done a lot of research on the ABCs, and we're ready to share that information with 3-year-olds everywhere." - John Flansburgh, to the Associated Press, March 2005.
