Lately I've felt my illustrator skills slipping into my abstract painting practice in a way that doesn't feel great to me. Like it's all getting to literal and less expressive. Today I'm experimenting with some different mark making tools in hopes of letting go a little bit more in future abstract paintings. Hey there! I'm Steph Fizer Coleman. Art Vlog: Trying Nova Color Acrylic Paints
มุมมอง 2062 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently tried Nova Color paints for the first time and instead of doing my usual, just jumping right into making a mess in a sketchbook, I decided to spend some time making mixing charts and fill in pages of my color journal. It really helped me get to know the paints so trying them in a small series of paintings felt much easier because I was so confident with the mixes and textures by the ...

I've been using this gorgeous Kuretake Gansai Tambi Art Nouveau palette for a few months and I love it but I was missing some yellows and blues. What brand is that short pointed brush? It looks like it would be fun to use. Love watching your process!
Thanks! That's a Royal Sabletek short round brush
@@sfcpaints Thanks! What size?
@@raelynnreffruschinni8802 I *think* that one is a #12
This is such a lovely process and work. Makes me want to do some traditional art again!
Pushing paint around really is so relaxing! I do a lot of my picture book illustration work in Photoshop and it's always a bit of a treat to work with actual paint and paper 🎨🎨
@@sfcpaints and you make it look so fun :) I'm defo going to do some soon!
Lovely, thanks for sharing this!
Lovely
Beautiful illustrations! ❤❤❤️
whoa those poppies are incredible! this sketchbook is INCREDIBLE!!!!! so many amazing pieces in here!
thanks Diane! 😊
I can totally relate to your process as an illustrator wanting to explore more of an abstract or painterly artistic expression. I find it hard to let go of the illustrative aspects and embrace the free flow of creating a piece that is intuitive and just fun. Enjoyed watching you try out new mediums and tools and enjoy the process. Been trying collage but still find it leans towards the illustrative more than the abstract. Might have to try some of your techniques. Keep creating.
It's so tricky, isn't it? Like when you want to take a more painterly approach you have to tuck your illustrator self into a closet in your brain
Those trees are beautiful. 🎄
thank you! 😊
Loved your sketchbook! ❤
thanks for watching! ♥
Do you use Wacom or Cintiq to draw directly on? Or do you use your mouse to draw.
yes I use a Cintiq Pro 27
So very helpful. Thanks.
Absolutely amazing art ❤❤❤
thank you!
What type of paper do you use for your sketchbooks?
This one is a blank notebook from Archer and Olive. The paper is 160gm with a smooth finish.
I love a good 5 minute sketch. I have two toddlers and it's extremely difficult to find quiet time just for artmaking. Recently, I have been carrying a mini sketchbook in my bag and I whip it out at cafés, family gatherings, or even in the car. Nothing legendary is created inside it but it keeps me sane and my creativity flowing!
It really does make such a difference, doesn't it? Just a few quick scribbles and you feel less like climbing the walls 😂
love seeing these experiments and hearing your thoughts after the fact!!!
I need to know something! your illustrations were on RGB mode? Were there at any point you changed to CMYK mode or you stick through RGB until final artwork? I love your work process and the output itself, it’s soooo amazing!
I work in RGB because the files sizes are much smaller but I use a CMYK color picker in Photoshop so when I need to convert my files to CMYK before sending them to a publisher there isn't any color shift. If you're new to publishing and not used to the more limited color range in CMYK, I'd recommend just working in CMYK.
@@sfcpaints That’s great! Thank you for the reply, i really appreciate it!
The tape pull really makes each one shine. I really like the top right one. This is such a cool idea.
That's my favorite as well!
Love this idea of making your own palette. Beautiful sketchbook! What brand is it?
It's an Archer and Olive blank notebook
I absolutely love the idea of an abstract sketchbook! I'm gonna make one of my own, it seems like so much fun!
highly recommend it! an abstract sketchbook is a lovely place to play
I watched your last video and fell absolutely in love w/ your brush work and lines and the way you built up color in your abstract pieces. I'm really excited to see more abstract paintings from you!!! Because I've really fallen in love with them. Excited to see more! :]
oh thank you so much!
Thank you❤
Love this!
thank you, Anita!
it would be so so so so hard
sis what! we have to draw it
You are as cute as your penguin's.
Love this exercise! I do something like this with my leftover paints also. ❤ Please check out my art channel as well. Maybe you like it. Thank yoooouuuu! Happy creations!
wow,,amazing
So inspiring-thanks for sharing. What sketchbook are you using? It looks nice and white with no texture.
thanks Debbie! It's a blank notebook from Archer and Olive. A little pricey but I enjoy using a nice sketchbook, even when I'm making messes :)
i love finding inspiration randomly in others' work and just watching this for a couple minutes brought me so many ideas i can paint myself. thank you for this! the proccess is so fun and the end result is so beautiful too ❤
how wonderful! so glad you found some inspiration here 💚
Hey, I subscribed! Thanks for sharing
Beautiful and inspiring ❤
thanks Carrie!
This is one of my go-to books for story times where I work. It's a wonderful book. I'm so glad I found this video.
thank you, Amanda! it's one of the first picture books I illustrated so it's got a special place in my heart :)
😍This is so pretty. Did you dry in between layers? Thanks!
not really more than a couple of minutes at most because most of the materials dry pretty quickly anyway and because i kind of like it when colors mix together on the page 💚
@@sfcpaints thank you!
💚💚💚 I love it!
thanks Adriana! 💚
I really love how you’ve combined the abstract and flowers and I’m excited to see where it goes. Please keep sharing!
thanks Niki! I'm excited about it too :)
Your abstract work is gorgeous! So inspiring. I love how you repeat the experimentation in multiple sections of a two-page spread.
thanks Dani! peeling the tape away and getting a few mini paintings on each spread is soooo satisfying!
Oh yes! I would love to see more of your abstracts and to see how you make them. I was especially drawn to your mid March golden colors and marks❤ Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!
thanks Pat!
So much Great information. It is very interesting to see things take form in Photoshop...😊
Great video especially for someone not familiar with Photoshop or digital. Love your process..thanks❤
Love this! ❤
Ha! Some of my watercolor crocus look like paw prints, however! … I had fun just swirling around the brush, and getting mesmerized by the colors doing their own things. I used mixed media paper, but tomorrow, I am going to quality watercolor paper. Next week I am going to try prepping the background with gouache. I want to experience adding water based white to acrylic gouache. Thanks for the tip, Steph. I am going to keep up crocus repetition as long as Steph does.
Thanks for this relaxing sketch. Love daffodils! Your sketchbook guide showed up in my Facebook stream. I downloaded it and it’s going to be good to get me pass my block.
Thanks Laura! I hope you're finding the Sketchbook Starter Guide helpful too 🌼

I really enjoyed the challenge and watching you work! Thanks for sharing and encouraging.
Interesting water spray technique! I like it!
This was such a wonderful challenge, thank you! I have a much better relationship with my sketchbook and tools now. I will continue doing it when I have little extra time during projects. :)
Love the frog! Good idea to use an art panel as pallet.
thank you 😃
In our practice, we should include, repetitions??!! Yeah, I know I really should, but I don’t. I think this is one of my creative downfalls. I need to put stuff in my attic, then use it, rather than let it crumple into dust.
yep you really should 😃 way back when i was trying to develop a style for kid's books, i set myself a challenge to draw birds every week and all that iteration of the same subject matter really helped me find my style and artistic voice. and i love practicing iteration in my sketchbook because i get a chance to follow the "what ifs" and end up learning so much more than i would have if i'd just stopped with one single drawing of a subject matter.
