I am a recent convert to the Eastern Orthodox Church. The goal of this channel is to share my experience of the Orthodox faith. To speak about books I have read or general information that I can share as a layman. Hopefully, and ultimately I hope people are converted to Christ and the Orthodox Faith.

Which Bible Should I Buy?
Often when people rediscover their faith or convert to Christianity, they don’t know which Bible they should be reading or which they should purchase. I had the same issue and in this video I will give the definitive answer of what Bible should be read and purchased by Christians. I will also give details of my journey on finding the best translations. I also give tips on what to avoid and include clips by orthodox clerics on this subject. I hope this helps and hopes that people are not confused or bamboozled by the multitude of editions and translations.

My journey to Christ - My conversion to the Orthodox Church

In this video I’m explaining my journey finding faith in Christ and eventually being received into the Orthodox Church. This video is not for showing what particularly convinced me of the Orthodox Faith more so my journey from un-belief to belief. The stages I went through in my world view and what led me to Christ. All of us have our unique encounters with our God and Saviour Christ and I like...
A few more points in favor of the Douay-Rheims is that it is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate, a translation of the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts produced by Saint Jerome in the late 3rd to early 4th centuries. St. Jerome is a canonized Orthodox Saint, was one of the great Church Fathers, a scripture scholar, and fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. The Vulgate was translated using ancient manuscripts, some of which no longer exist. The Vulgate also predates the Masoretic Text, the oldest Hebrew manuscript tradition produced and distributed by the Jewish Masoretes between the 6th to 10th centuries. The Masoretic Text is an excellent manuscript tradition, but there's no telling what alterations the Masoretes made in their process to edit Christ out of the Bible. The Protestans get their 66 book canon from the Masoretic Text, and the Masoretes very likely cut out the deuterocanon because of how much it pointed to the reality of Christ and the Church. Lastly, the Vulgate is a pre-East-West Schism text, making it a truly ecumenical translation. Remember that translation is an art, not a science, so no translation is perfect. Those who want the most authentic reading experience have no other recourse but to learn and become fluent in the original tongues.
How do I know which bible i have already? Is there a quick test, a verse somewhere to be used as an indicator/ proof? The one book is the only reference I have.
Juat a note any Non Orthodox bible. Will not have the proper canon Doesn't matter if u get King James with Apocrypha/Deuterocanon. 1611 King James, Some Catholic Translation. We have 76 books, and the non Orthodox Deuterocanons will only bring u you 73 books. I suggest getting a KJV or NKJV and then getting a septuagint translation
I've been reading the Orthodox Study Bible every night now. There's just one thing I found that is a little discouraging and am wondering if you can give your thoughts. PROVERBS 30:4 in the Orthodox study bible translates "What is the name of his Son?" as "What is the name of his Children?" when KJK, NKJV and every other one of looked at says "Son" not "Children". and the note for that verse says that the children are christians. When I thought it was referring to Christ.
Check out the EOB (Eastern Orthodox Bible) there is the pocket addition
Does anybody know anything about the convent that makes the prayer ropes in the Etsy link? Their Facebook page says they are located in Ukraine and are under ROCOR but I can’t find anything about them outside of their own page. I don’t even see them on ROCOR’s website. Not sure if that means something. EDIT: After reaching out to the monastery, and asking ROCOR directly through email, I’ve confirmed the convent that makes and sells these ropes is under the schismatic bishop Agafangelos (Pashkovsky). They are non-canonical.
When and how did get that Leathersoft OSB from Nelson? They've popped up as pre-orders and then disappeared again for a long time, but I had no idea some people were actually able to get a copy. Could you do an in-depth review and look at it on the inside for us? Thanks so much!
Essential items that Orthodox Christians should own: a love of God and a love of neighbour.
The KJV has already been mathematically proven to be God's perfect book. The total wordcount, (including verse numbers and titles in the count) comes out to exactly 823,543. That's significant because 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 823,543 Revelation 5:1 "And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with **seven seals**." There's a video titled "The Elton Anomoly" that fully explains this.
thats not mathematical proof its just mathematical confidence through bayes theorem P(KJV is holy | word count 7^7 and seven seals verse) = P(7|holy)/P(7) * P(holy) supposing the KJV is holy, what is the probability its wordcount would be 7^7 anyways? maybe like 1 in 10 its certainly one way for God to leave a clue. whats the probability any arbitrary version also has wordcount 7^7? well let’s just assume any version has wordcount between 95% and 105% of the KJVs or so, a range of 8000 round that up to 10k probable wordcounts why not. 1 in 10k. and what is our prior probability the KJV is holy? say 1 in 10 among other options this puts us at round a 10000% chance the kjv is holy, not bad right?
I'm on a road to possibly convert to Orthodoxy, this will help if I do so
Thank you, very helpful!
Whoa, how on earth did you get the Nelson re-release in brown leathersoft? They've been talking about that (and a black genuine leather) edition forever, and they have popped up for pre-order occasionally, but have never been filled. Can you do a review of the inside of that one and tell me how the paper is? I'm in the process of doing a rebind of the Ancient Faith Edition, but would wait and switch to this Nelson if the paper is way better.

I'm going to a Greek Orthodox Bible study today for the first time. I wouldn't consider myself a mainline Protestant, I'm just an apologist trying to learn about Orthodoxy.

The Orthodox Study Bible is really Protestant even though it includes the Apocrypha and Psalm 151.
It’s based on the NKJV. But other than that, what exactly makes it Protestant?
@@LNR65 Put it this way it is not an acceptable Catholic translation. Perhaps you should compare it with the RSV 2 CE and decide for yourself. 😊

@@RatsAreNice222 Your comment says it all. The Orthodox church is more closely aligned to Roman Catholicism than Protestantism ever has been.

Why is he holding a microphone? To have better audio quality. If he didnt have the microphone the audio quality would be worse. So in essence, he does need it to make a video of good quality.

I've been orthodox for a few years and I have such a strong opposition to these types of videos. You don't need to make any purchases right away. You don't need the study bible- any Bible works great. Dr. Constantinou says the best version /translation of the Bible is one that you already have and will read. Otherwise her favorite translation/version is the Revised Standard edition. The OSB is great to the commentary, but I would honestly spend my money on a Lectionary that has the daily readings paired with Chysostom's commentaries. You don't need a prayer book right away- you can say the Jesus prayer and pray the Psalms in the Bible you already have. A prayer book your priest recommends can come later. You don't need a prayer rope right away. You don't need all the books right away. You can get a small postcard icon with the panagia and Christ on her lap. The ancient church was illiterate and they learned how to be Christian by attending the services. If you don't live within an hour of an orthodox church or monastery, make the move closer a priority. What the real essentials are, cannot be bought: the Jesus prayer, a spiritual father, a church community.

I agree with your point, as I said in the video, it’s best to speak to priest about these things. In regard to Bible translations, the reason I mention them is because almost all Bibles in the market are Protestant and contain Protestant presuppositions in their texts. You’re completely right these items are not a need, but they help of course.

Most orthodox churches, priests and scholars absolutely HATE the OSB. It’s horrible. It’s a very bad and weak translation… it’s a weak commentary and it’s very Protestant focused. Stay away from it! I’ve never heard of it nor seen it used by any Orthodox Church, catechism, priest, nor many orthodox Christians..except the brand new catechumens who think it’s something special. It also actually just mostly uses the NKJV and it tells you that and was was mostly spearheaded by Fr. Peter Gilquist who was the famous evangelical pastor that converted his whole church into an Orthodox Church. So there’s that. All you need is any Protestant Bible (especially if it has the apocrypha in it or “deutercannonicals” or get a Catholic Bible which is almost identical anyway.
Very true!! I’ve been ortho for many many years. All good points. For a newbie actually any Bible is good enough. But if you’re going to get an Orthodox Bible, The EOB is a better and more accurate translation basically an improvement of the OSB BUT they only made a NT version. OSB I never see used by any Ortho parish and only hear bad things about it. I have one and it’s okay to have and use and better than nothing. But it’s not really all that at all.
i am a non ortodox christian. what is the purpose of these materialistic things? Does an orthodox christian believe they need these things for salvation or is it about strengthening the holy spirit?
think of them as tools to strengthen the spirit and your faith
Christ deemed it fit to take on the material to work out our salvation. Material things are not bad in and of themselves, only in the absence of Christ.
Furthermore, a Bible is material in the same manner as a prayer book, mere circumscription of the immaterial (words, which denote concepts)
Meaning they think we believe if we don’t pray before icons^*******^^
The reason we reject the faith alone doctrine or sola fide is because we believe that idea causes Christian to forget we have a purpose in this world. If faith alone will save us. But are constantly tempted by evil in this world, and we have the mindset (whelp I slipped and sinned but I’m saved), Satan has won and gives us zero purpose in this life. We have a purpose. And it’s to transfigure our souls back to Christ. Have a family. And lead be example out of integrity and honesty to save others. Don’t forget. Heaven is the goal. But we have a mission here too!!

Where do I get most of these items? Icons, prayer books, etc
Best to get them at a Canonical Orthodox Church. If your Church does not have them I have some suggestions if you’re in the US. stmpress.com store.ancientfaith.com churchsupplies.jordanville.org/?srsltid=AfmBOoq8MKpim7NJ3Chu7CBDV5kjnkMWuxeYbv-n83gn8cIrsYuXfZtm
Icons you can get from many places, including at your local church. Orthodox countries/cities will often have religious supply shops - I recently came back from Greece with many lovely icons. Travelling to buy these is obviously more cost prohibitive. You can buy them online, though it can be harder to confidently authenticate these if not purchased from a trusted seller. I do not know where you live so I cannot comprehensively recommend any, but "Pilgrim Gifts" in the UK and "Legacy Icons" in the USA are a good starting point. The cheapest option for icons would be printing them. You can find good quality icon images online, and print these at home, or have them done professionally. You could then frame them if you so wished. Saint John Maximovitch had paper icons in his prayer corner. The same generally goes for other items (crucifixes, censers, chotkis, etc). Depending on the predominence of orthodoxy in your country, the internet is likely your next best option. You should be buying from verifiably "orthodox" outlets where possible. Various monasteries have online shops/international shipping. As for books, these similarly might be found at your church or local religious supply/book shop, but most likely you will have to go online - again without knowing where you are, Amazon is probably your best bet. You might also find some second-hand, e.g. on eBay. Your priest can likely give you more pertinent advice. God bless you

luck doesn't exist, you should rather say 'may God ne with you in your spiritual journey'
Just a tip, if you struggle with the knots, you can actually just tug at the rope and spread them out. i owned a chotki for several months before i figured that out. i saw priests using some in youtube videos where the knots were more spread out and easier to count, and wondered where they got them. one day i took a risk and just stretched out my chotki, and while i did fear i was about to just break it, what actually happened, is the knots all spread apart relatively evenly, and it's now become so much easier to count, as it's very obvious when you're at a new knot when they aren't so bunched together. it's made praying the chotki so much better, as i no longer have constantly glance down at my position.
Or use a lestovka instead
Oh, I need to try that! I just got one with wooden beads since I saw the pilgrim had one in “way of the pilgrim” so I figured there had to be something there lol
May God bless you brother this actually works
I like the beads better but when I have the knot-style, I stretch it out too.
