Trees give us so much - from the air we breathe to the food we eat. Yet, most of us know precious little about them. If you've grown up in a city; curious, yet clueless about trees, this channel seeks to connect you with the trees around you. From tips to identify common trees, to folk tales and mythological stories about trees; from proverbs and etymology, to the history and symbolism of trees, here's where you'll find a variety of snippets drawn from my love and understanding of trees.
I am a children's author from India, published by Puffin, Karadi Tales and Katha, amongst others; and my writing is centered around Indian History, Culture and Nature. My first book - Tracing Roots, published by Karadi Tales, is a book about trees for children. You'll also find my articles and blogposts about trees, up on my website at www.mallikaravikumar.com.
After browsing through the videos, I do hope you feel like going over to hug a tree!

Nature Poems of Sarojini Naidu, the Nightingale of India
i am so happy that i chanced upon your channel. As a matter of fact, I was just as mesmerised when i first set eyes on it and we're talking some 1250 metres above sea level; somewhere in a tiny hill station in Tamil Nadu. When you mentioned about its incredible ability to deplete ground water; Im sure that would be an issue when it comes to here coz this place receives 7 months of rainfall in a year. So taken back i was that i also picked a few seed pods off the ground and germinated some to plant near our home. And did you know, its saplings (may be two years or so ) smell just as sweet as the flower. I am amazed at how the sapling when caught in a gentle drift of breeze brings about/wafts that same fragrance. it confused me first and thought it could be another nearby plant, but then when i actually did a sniff test, it actually was that very sapling. Can you be kind enought to explain why is that so ?
Thank you for sharing your experience and joy at discovering the jacaranda. I can totally relate to it. So glad the channel is reaching like minded people :) Regarding your question, honestly I have no idea! I have only seen jacaranda trees and know the flowers are very sticky. I have no experience with the sapling. Sounds interesting that the sapling has such a strong fragrance. Will try and find out. Thanks for sharing this. :)
It warms my heart to see such videos. GO Native, can't put more emphasis on this. Too many Indian species are being extinct, and are on the red list, yet people have difficult time understanding this issue. It is the human greed for timber, medicine and other resources that exotic species are being imported. One more thing is, human ego, "Look I can plant this species that is from so and so country". I want, I like, I need, thus I will do so, this attitude have and will destroy many Eco-systems. Millions of other species are there in nature that we should consider. Keep up the good work, you are doing god's work.🙏🏽
Thank you so much for your warm msg, kind words, appreciation and encouragement. It really means a lot. Glad the youtube algorithm matched the right viewer to the content. :)

Ok can u please tell me how soon does a seed grown jacarandes flower?
I have not planted a jacaranda. But I think it will take a few years to get from seed to flower stage - might be 10 years or more.
Trees sucking the water? They don't drill the borewell to exploit the groundwater. 😡
Upsc 2024... preliminary question.. Which one of the following shows a unique relationship with an insect that has coevolved with it and that is the only insect that can pollinate this tree ? (A) Fig (B)Mahua (C)Sandalwood (c)Silk cotton Ans.(A)Fig
Wow. Nice. Didn't know they asked botany quations in UPSC :) Such a wide range of subjects the students study. No wonder it is so hard to crack. Fantastic!
What is your opinion about amaltaas and gulmohar in case of water consumption 🙏🙏 please reply
Amaltas is indigenous to India. It is not exotic like Jacaranda and Gulmohur. Amaltas is also very beautiful. A good tree to plant. Gulmohur is not native to India. It comes from Madagascar. It has very shallow roots and is one of the first trees to fall /break branches in heavy rain and wind.
Waste of time😡 caption and video not same.total waste
Sorry that you found this a waste. Do suggest an appropriate caption that would match the content. Many people (including foreign visitors to India) don't know how to identify a mango tree and would like to know its features. They have found this video helpful. If you have a better caption, pl do suggest. Thank you.

Yeah especially Valmiki Ramayana contains the names of so many trees and plants. Thank you for bringing this out
Yes...it mentions many details about plants and the landscape. Thank you for your appreciation.
Apprecating your noble initiative to make informative content on tress and their cultural relevance. I doubt if it is Lord Rama or his forefather King Raghu. This story comes in many Indian epics including the famous Raghuvamsham of Mahakavi Kalidasa
Yes...like all legends, there are multiple versions of this one too. I have also heard some versions mention that it was Rama's ancestor. Thank you for your appreciation :)
Sadly last year my neighbour chopped off a Panganapalli variety Mango tree just because he feared that its roots may damage his house. Don't know why but people often give this lame excuse. A 90 year old man is so concerned about uprooting a harmless tree for his house as if he's gonna take his home up when he passes away. What's wrong in having a tree in your house or letting others have one. What are we gonna take at the end? Nothing. Then shouldn't we be of some use to Mother nature by planting her soil with some trees Kindly make a video speaking about the scientific ways in which we can still let a beautiful tree grow without its root harming us. Well I personally don't mind roots developing. But my neighbour constantly fights with me. Kindly give a solution
Thank you for your comments. Really sad to know about the mango tree in your neighbourhood. It is a very difficult decision to cut down a tree if it is causing a risk. I don't know about this particular case....but in some places permission of the local municipal tree authority is required for cutting down any tree, even if it is on private property. Thank you for the suggestion. I will make a video on this. You may find this episode interesteing and useful - where I have explained the rules in Maharashtra and also suggested what one can do - th-cam.com/video/9nRPhfOd790/w-d-xo.htmlsi=s2KzzURxwvsY0MmZ
Thanks a lot. We really need a law for the whole of this nation that can save trees
Thank you for this interesting information
Glad you found it interesting:)
How much ground water does it absorb I.e full grown jacaranda
I was not able to find any specific quantity in any of the articles I looked up. The reports based on which the law was passed in South Africa may have some quantitative data.
very informative, and true.
💥💥💥💥💥 what a joke jacaranda tree drinks more water in other countries but in its native country it does not,😂😂😂
It's native home is equitorial and tropical forests of the Amazon where the water table is high. Bangalore's typical vegetation is semi deciduous. The research shared in the video, the problems experts claim it has caused in Africa, and the legislation passed in South Africa to not plant this tree may all be a joke for you - pl counter it with some research and data if you have any.

Sure. Thank you for asking. I'd suggest native trees like laburnum(amaltas) ...gorgeous yellow flowers; and Palash (Flame of the forest) ...lovely crimson flowers; Pangara (Indian coral tree)...bright lovely red flowers, Bakain (India berry)...soft scented lilac flowers in spring; Champa and Aakash neem (white flowers) intoxicating heady scent. There are many more :) Hooe this helps.
