There's only two opinions that you can have in this case. Either Grayson genuinely wanted to kill Massey or he didn't. I've watched the video's of this encounter over and over...I've watched The Civil Rights Lawyers (TCRL) version of events and here's my take: TLDR: It was a justified shoot. In watching the video multiple times it wasn't until TCRL posted screenshots of the event that I even realized that she didn't have the pot. Even TCRL thought she had a hold of the pot for most of the encounter. Grayson's body cam was on during this as there are still images that TCRL posted...I have not watched the raw footage from Grayson body cam. It's in one of Grayson's body cam stills that the pot is clearly seen on the counter next to the sink, in a spot that she never turns to in the other deputy's body cam. Even the other deputy though she still had the pot. I believe they both did. Under this assumption and the comment she made, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus" which is almost always associated with someone throwing water on another person, coupled with Massey's clearly disturbed mental state, I believe they thought she would throw the boiling hot water on them. Of course she didn't have the pot in her hands! She did however still have the mitts she used to carry the pot off the stove. These mitts are what lead me to believe she still had the pot which I though was red the entire time until seeing the still image of it and seeing that it was a dark brown/bronze color. When she raises her hands in the video I really though she raised her hands with the pot in them as if she was going to throw the water. Then she crouches down saying I'm sorry behind a counter where the officers don't have line of sight on her or what is back there. This only escalates the situation. As Grayson steps around the side of the counter thinking she still has the pot and that she could throw it at him coupled with what else could possibly be behind the counter Massey confirms what his is thinking by grabbing the pot and throwing it, whether right in front of her or at Grayson doesn't matter from the vantage of Grayson, he has to react to that action and assume that since he already told her to put it down and she hasn't that he's in danger. I can totally empathize with how Massey must have be feeling. Scared out of her mind. She did what she thought was going to alleviate the officers "fears" by getting down but that really only made it worse because of the counter. Then she grabbed the pot again.... I firmly believe this would not have ended this way had she not grabbed the pot again and dumped/thrown it. I'm sure this is an unpopular take but that's how I saw it...and I saw it a lot...
