Learn Bandoneon

Hi all,
My name is Brett Lemley, and I'm the Director of the Tango Mercurio Community Orchestra in Washington, DC. I'm also a professional musician and music teacher, playing trumpet professionally since the late 1980's. I created this channel to fill a need that I myself felt when I first started playing the bandoneon back in 2013.
With the growing popularity of both Tango and the Bandoneon, there are thousands of us around the world learning to play this instrument without a teacher nearby to help us. My goal is 1) Show that it can be done(I currently share Bandoneon 1 duties in the Mercurio orchestra), and 2) Give a decent example of how to play each exercise in the Ambros Method.
While I am not an accomplished bandoneonist yet, I hope these vides help inspire people to practice and stick with it. This instrument can be maddening to learn, but the rewards are great. Please let me know if these videos are of assistance, and, if I can help with anything don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you! Is very helpful! I based in the UK and there is limited resources to learn bandoneon here. I manage to get a copy of the Ambros, but have no idea to how to start with.
Thank you so much for the videos Brett. It’s such a great music instrument, You did a great job. I’m going to look for a bandoneon.
Initially when you played you had questionable fingering, using mostly your pointer finger. Slow or fast, we should use the same fingering to minimise confusion and keep our muscle memory on such a system. This changes of course after time when you become more practiced. Coming from a pianist/accordionist and teacher. I think be consistent with your examples and fingerings for beginners. I appreciate these videos. Fascinatingly scary system and I hope to give it a go one day! Matt - Australia
I'm from uruguay but I live in England, so this really helps!
Thank you!
Also, same button produces different sounds when you push and draw. When you play during the tutorial there is no way of knowing if you are pulling or pushing. Nothing is said about which buttons are pressed. Is there any way to record a video explaining all that. Thank you very much.
It’s impossible to follow. Fingers block buttons. Also the first lessons should be about the basics of the instrument. I think it’s for people with musical background who play other instruments. As this is the only tutorial on TH-cam I’m very saddened that I can’t learn here.
Ambros es mi bisabuelo😍
How do I get the book you mentioned…Ambros? I live in Florida but I believe the bandoneon has the most melodious sound than any other instrument, interested in learning. Thank you
Hi Brett, do you plan to continue this course? That would be great!
thanks for the video it is useful as it is difficult to find English teaching video of bandoneon. is there any english version of the book you mentioned? or any material or book you recommended for beginner?
The Ambros Method on Amazon costs between $159 and $473, and is in Spanish. Is there a place to get it in English at a reasonable price?
www.benbogart.com/tangoproject/resources/Ambros%20Metodo%20Complete%20para%20Bandoneon%20Full.pdf There is no English edition, but there is almost no text anyway, so it doesn't matter.
@@cliveharrison99 Thank you!
What can I do in relation to Ambros p 16 exercise since my left hand keyboard does not correspond to the picture nor your sound. The first difference is my third note is e flat not natural?
Is this the same video at #2 p18?
Any tips on where to find an instrument to rent or buy in the U.S.?
Do you have any tips on picking up a bandoneón? Seems to be a few variations and not sure what to pick. Thank you!
How tf r notes placed there I'm confused.
1:34 I've also noticed that tango rarely uses the closing notes. But lazy people like me come to the opposite conclusion that you do: namely, we conclude that we only have to learn opening! Haha, I guess it comes down to personal philosophy, as well as how hard you're willing to work. Hello from Ohio. Thanks for letting me try out your bandoneon a month ago. I may rent one soon.
How did it turned about your bandeon after 5 years?
Hello, Brett! First of all, thanks for these videos. They've inspired me to get my fathers bandoneon that was sitting in a shelf for 40 years and get it tuned. So, to my question. My bandoeon is a Lange, with only 53 buttons, and it doesn't really match the exercises on the method. Is there a way to adapt or do you know of any method that is specific to an instrument with fewer tones? Thanks and greetings from Brazil.
Hi Filip! I don't know anything about the model with 53 buttons. If you can find out who designed it, you might be able to find some kind of tutor to show you how to play. Sorry I can't be of more help. Brett
I’m a bit late but it seems that you’re talking about a Chemniz region concertina instrument rather than a bandoneon
The firs time you do this it's definitely more than 15 minutes :)
i love playing bandoneon here in Argentina, love playing chacareras. i started playing it at the age of 9 when i was a little kid.
Hi again, So I've been looking at the Ambros Metodo you're using, and I would like to ask you a few questions. But first, I just want to say thank you again. This is really a good job you've done and it's really a source of motivation for me ! Concerning the book. You said that you're starting at page 16, because that's where the first real exercice is. But I would like to know if i've to learn all the fingering before starting these exercices. Should i learn that this button is for this note - opening - and this note - closing ? Or can I just start directly page 16 and discover each note as it appears in the book ? I don't know if it's clear, since I'm not a native English speaker but I hope you get my point. Thank you :)
Thank you so much ! I'm glad to find some videos about the bandonéon ! Val from France
Im a pianist from Buenos Aires that is currently working in some arrangements for a small tango group. I never played or owned a bandoneon, so this material could be very useful to figure out some characteristics about the instrument
It's hard to find a bandoneon that is 142 38/33 here in the states. I'm going back to Buenos Aires to buy one and a few lessons. Still, no schools for bandoneon in the US so thank you for the lessons. Keep making videos.
thank very much for your lessons
I'm glad you like them. More are coming soon! :)
"You would notice this is not a trumpet." I laughed for that LOL
What a great idea Brett! The bandoneon is such an under-rated instrument outside Argentina. Everyone around the world who works in Tango performance needs a good bandoneon player but cannot find any.. so this is a great initiative.
Thank you so much!! I'm working on getting the next set of videos done. My hope is to have the whole book up eventually. Thanks for the message!
thank you very much, i've just seen this video. I was looking for some lessons like this and can't afford piravite lessons. Thank you so much.
Too bad I don't have a bandoneon :D
Thank you, Brett….What brand of bandoneon do you recommend? Yes, I am a beginner, but do not want to compromise on excellent sound quality…..regards.
Hi Lynne! The gold standard is Alfred Arnold, but those are often in bad shape. I play on a 2001 Klingenthal. If you'd like recommendations of people to ask about instruments, let me know!
congratulations and move on
Gracias for alll lessons, and C major scala. Arrivederci
Hello Brett, your bandoneon needs service. Some notes are too shrill (ex. A, B right hand), this is normally solved replacing leather valves. Thanks for your videos.
+Juliano Azevedo Thanks for the comment, Juliano! I'm aware of some issues my instrument has, but I don't have a technician nearby. I'm planning on getting it tuned and voiced soon. Thanks for watching!
Just to let everyone know they can find the workbook here: lightonthestairs.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/ambros-low.pdf
