Ah, it is lonely, and I empathize. I am lucky enough to have my kid and my husband, who I moved to Germany for, but there are still those moments where the ache is palpable for easy friendships, access to family and comfort of the familiar. My best advice is to try finding interest groups or common community. Some of the best people I know here are involved in regular Stammtisch or organizing. In solidarity and support of whatever path forward you find best for you.

I think the best way to make friends in Germany is to get in an association? We have „Vereine“ in every hobby and many of them with people our age. But honestly i don’t know much about Berlin, so I can‘t say if it‘s the same as hier in NRW. I hope you get well again.

As an extroverted, introverted German, I can let you in on a secret: We are not rude or reserved, but _shy._ Yes, most Germans are introverted and don't want to bother others. We only react rudely if they bother us. As extroverted introverts, we have a superpower: we _can_ make contact and break the ice, so it's up to us to start a conversation. After that, all Germans _will_ open up, trust me, and being the good conversationalists and loyal souls that they are, you can easily make friends for life this way. It's all about who breaks the ice. How do I know that? I drove a taxi for 15 years and whenever I broke the ice, it always resulted in wonderful conversations that often continued long after arriving at the destination and even some friendships. But it was always me who had to break the ice.

November is also gonna heavily influence if i start seriously thinking about moving to Germany or some other country close by. But honestly I been wanting to move internationally for the last 10 years, but a lot of the times i just put it off or made excuses. I am lonely over here, so that wouldn't bother me too much, since I seen that common complaint for expats in Germany.

There’s a large/ huge expat meet-up weekly in Frankfurt. I read 600 people showed up last week. Have you checked if there’s something similar in Berlin?

I totally understand about being a loner. I have been an outlier all my life. What keeps me going is finding a purpose. I am not very social, whereas my wife is. For me growing up was getting away from my family and home town of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I am totally different than they are. I had to find a way to survive, and be able to do art. I have done this all my life. I retired when I was 61, because I was so sick of the system. Now I spend up to 4 or 5 hours a day doing art, and I look for as many ways to get involved doing this, even though I cannot stand going to art openings with all the people around. I will go when I know when others are not around. Also now being 69, I get frustrated because I would like to explore the world more (I never had the finances or time before). I continually seek programs such as residencies where I can do art, talk about and show what I do. I have been looking at Berlin, unable to find anything for someone my age=( Anyway, I have thought about going there next year for maybe a few weeks to a month, just to get this out of my system, before I get too old. My wife does not like this idea at all. So, best wishes on finding your purpose. Keep doing what you are doing. Find others that may have same interests. Hope to meet in Berlin in October. Rod

Maybe the fact the de cathedral is protestant since 1567 is the reason that all the catholic richness is gone. In 1631, Magdeburg was also plundered by the emperors regiments during the 30 years war. Many citizens fled or died. The city was destroyed. And the bombings of 1944/45 didn’t help either. In my opinion, it is a miracle that the city still exits after all the difficulties it had to face during history. It is not a charming place. But it is resilient and strong. And if you open your eyes, you can see it. But the extra charging at the Johanneskirche was not cool.

If you want to try a good brunch spot, then I'll recommend Tucker Brunch Bar in Friedrichshain. Very cheap but very very good.

The Böhse Onkelz are verry special to me. Their songs are about the real life, addiction, death, love... I lost a lot of beloved people and had alcohol and meth addiction and verry bad depression with suicide in mind. My best friend and those songs safed me and gave me the power to start again and got clean.

We went to Panorama Punkt which also has a great view. One of my favorite places to visit is the East Side Gallery.

The thing about Falco, was that he seemed, to me, to be a British persona inside a Viennese body. I only know a few words of German, but I can understand his humour, his sarcasm, and the intelligence in his lyrics. He suffered for being an artist who was born too soon. The 80's were not conducive to his International outlook, his seemingly Left leaning views, and his very british self parodying. Its difficult for Americans to get the humour and genius of Falco, they barely get British humour, nevermind the somewhat black and gloomy Viennese humour and outlook. As a Brit, I 'get; Falco, and appreciate him. By the size of the crowd there, I think a lot of others appreciated him too. I feel you wrote him off hastilly, with a few lines of a song. I would suggest giving an artist a chance and maybe a little research into them may help to put the into cultural and historical context.
