A Felicidade - Antônio Carlos Jobim (arr. Heitmeyer)
Brazilian Jazz for the Classical Guitar - Steven Saulls, Classical Guitarist
About the music and the composer…
"A felicidade" ("Happiness") is a bossa nova song by Antônio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes, composed in 1958 for the French film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus).
The theme of the song is the fragility of happiness. The lyrics begin: "Tristeza não tem fim. Felicidade sim" ("Sadness has no ending. Happiness does"). The lyrics compare happiness to a drop of dew, a feather floating in the wind, and the poor escaping their reality in the fantasies of Carnaval, emphasizing the transitory nature of each. The final stanzas reference the "namorada" (girlfriend/sweetheart) of the character singing the song, without touching directly on the theme of impermanence and loss. In the context of the film, however, these stanzas describe Orfeu's search for Euridice after her death ("É como esta noite, passando, passando, em busca da madrugada..." ("It's like tonight, passing, passing, in search of dawn...").
Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (January 25, 1927 - December 8, 1994), also known as Tom Jobim (Portuguese pronunciation: [tõ ʒoˈbĩ]), was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer. Considered one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim internationalized bossa nova and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound, with popular success. As a result, he is sometimes known as the "father of bossa nova".
Jobim was a primary force behind the creation of the bossa nova style, and his songs have been performed by many singers and instrumentalists internationally since the early 1960s.
In the 1940s, Jobim started to play piano in bars and nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro, and in the first years of the 1950s, he worked as an arranger in the Continental Studio, where he had his first composition recorded, in April 1953, when the Brazilian singer Mauricy Moura recorded Jobim's composition Incerteza, with lyrics by Newton Mendonça.
Jobim became prominent in Brazil when he teamed up with poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes to write the music for the play Orfeu da Conceição (1956). The most popular song from the show was "Se Todos Fossem Iguais A Você" ("If Everyone Were Like You"). Later, when the play was adapted into a film, producer Sacha Gordine did not want to use any of the existing music from the play. Gordine asked de Moraes and Jobim for a new score for the film Orfeu Negro, or Black Orpheus (1959). Moraes was at the time away in Montevideo, Uruguay, working for the Itamaraty (the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and so he and Jobim were only able to write three songs, primarily over the telephone ("A felicidade", "Frevo" and "O nosso amor"). This collaboration proved successful, and de Moraes went on to pen the lyrics to some of Jobim's most popular songs.

@ you motivated me to do some hymns so I thank you again I did “the old rugged cross” and “in the garden” particularly motivated by your channel when we met
Glad to hear it! By the way, in a few months or so, I'll be adding 10 new hymn arrangements to the Classic Hymns and Praise Songs Playlist. (I'm really excited about those new additions!)

Good morning with steven$ ✋️
Good morning to you and thank you for your recent visit to my TH-cam channel!
My book shows that A note (16th and final movement) to be played on the 4th string (7th fret)but I notice you play it in the second fret third string - does it matter?
I used a portamento from the C, 5th fret to the A second fret because I liked the gentle gliding, sighing sound it produced. It is just an optional musical idea to consider. Thanks for your observations and your recent visit to my TH-cam channel!
Amazing!
Thank you for your encouraging words and, your visit to my TH-cam channel!
💝💖💗😍
Thanks for visiting!

Dear Steven, I like so much you work! Please, if possible can you play "La Catedral" of Agustin Barrios?
Thank you for the kind comments and encouragement! Perhaps someday I shall record La Catedral (I worked on that many years ago). Right now, I have quite a few pieces in the que ahead of Catedral. Eventually, however, I hope to get to that one! Thanks again for your visit to my TH-cam channel!
Nicely done. Peace mate.
Thank you!
Steven , combien d’ heures par jour avec ta guitare pour jouer cela ?
Super❤et toujours avec le sourire
Merci beaucoup!
❤ bravo Steven, belle musique et super interprétation ! Question ?
Thank you, really enjoy this style of music.
Thank you too, I'm glad that you've enjoyed it!
Lovely, maestro!

I have the book (The Faithful Guitarist) this arrangement came from and I have used several pieces from the collection with my guitar students. It's a wonderful collection. I have been searching TH-cam for several years and yours is the first video I've seen. Have you recorded any other selections from that book? I'd love to see more. My 17 year old granddaughter is learning this piece as we speak.
