The magnet test is NOT 100% reliable. But I use one in thrift stores in combination with a strong powered jewelery loupe. I've had magnetic 14 karat gold...and it apparently depends on what metals are mixed in the gold. Acid testing does damage to the item and isn't accurate or reliable...as the acid itself breaks down in a week or two. I take all my items to a xray machine...?xrf I think it's called...to get the exact metal percentages. I have my own scale but wish I had other tools like gem testers. This hobby has much better odds than gambling!
