Francis Kofi Akotuah is a traditional drummer from Ghana, West Africa. Born and raised in the melting pot neighborhood of New Town, Francis grew up in an environment bursting with the sights and sounds of Ghana's many ethnic groups.
Francis now directs Ghanaian performance ensembles at UCLA and UC Santa Cruz. He also teaches at the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, CA and at institutions around the San Francisco Bay Area.

Kpatsa at the University of Ghana
Kpatsa is social music from the Ga-Dangme people of Ghana's central coastline. Often associated with puberty rites and rituals, it's also performed on social occasions. It is believed to have first been danced by dwarves, hence some of the signature movements.

The Vice President of Ghana visited the San Francisco Bay Area in April of 2018 with a team of ministers and business owners to meet with technology companies in Silicon Valley. This was recorded in March 2010 at a wake-keeping in Madina, Accra. We are playing Jama, a Ga style of music that is very fluid and participatory. We are using djembes here, but normally you would see this music played on kpanlogo drums.
