Life As A Machine Shop Owner - #3 Lets build a rotary adaptor!
Rather than spend money on a 90° rotary adaptor, I repurposed some aluminum drops and made my own. Who knew you could save $2500 by using $4000 of your own time and materials? 🤔

Talon V1 Demonstration

Your keys are always nearby so we designed the TALON V1 to fit neatly on your keychain. Whether opening a package at the mailbox or in the field setting up camp, the always razor sharp TALON V1 is just a few seconds away. Standard features include an integrated safety which prohibits the blade from unintentionally deploying , a key ring location, and a simple breakdown mechanism for quick and e...
What blades did you use. Bought some Stanley ones but the notches are off by around 1mm
Beautiful custom fixturing
subscribed! very nice man. i would love to see not just more, but everything on fixturing! maybe mixed in a multi-video series where you go thru the whole process?
Great Video but lower the music please next time. Keep up the good work.
Dar music is much too loud.
You should do a video on how to manually code on this machine. Would be a major help to me
Ты реально крут!
Great video 👍. Would have loved to see the machining of the platen and the supports too, and even some more of the design stuff in fusion. Didn't mean that in any negative way at all, this was super cool, just meant to say that if you threw more of that in it wouldn't add too much to the vid (like you said at the 11:10 timestamp). I'm sure it's pretty time consuming to film and edit while you're trying to get work done though. Anyway, cool stuff here man, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to watching the next one.
Beautiful work!! That will save epic time!! Might be wise to get a torque wrench to set tools in holders and for stock in vises. I've found it easier to avoid silly mistakes and tool failures.
I agree and use one religiously!
Nice work and good job on the video, but there's a ton of versatility to a having a zero point fixture on your 4th. Then you can switch between this style vise shelf, a vise mounted to the face of the rotary, a collet chuck, tkmbstone style dedicated fixtures, etc. It's suber fast to swap around.
I completey agree, but I'm balling on a budget right now lol. We'll get into a zero point in the future!
@@hallprecision I was in the same place (still somewhat am, but a bit better now) so I used the Orange ZPS. It's probably not as good as Lang or the other high end systems, but for the us the cost to utility ratio has paid off.
Good job. I would only suggest that you might want to reduce your projection length on your tool holders. When they hang out that long you can’t get aggressive with your cuts you will end up with a screamer and chatter galore.
Shit I work on 813 Harden to 45 and unfortunately I have to use a half inch and mill hanging out 3 inches to be able to reach some of my spots I worked in the automotive industry and unfortunately only use three axis machines
How long does it take to accomplish the programming and troubleshoot the program for your mini box cutterr before it is ready for machining? How long does it take to do the machining as well? I am 72 yrs old and operate a conversational cnc mill and seeing what you do just makes my head hurt,.
love the protruding slots with receiving slot for orientating
станок вроде хорошо выглядит а стол уже запиздячил))
Nice video!
I have been thinking about making something similar to this for my rotary.
Great video and content! I always enjoy a video with CAD and CAM along with any info on the thought process 👍🏾
Chip Conveyor: "To infinity ... and beyond!" Chip Conveyor: "D'oh! Busted!"
Nice work - It would be nice to see the changes in the fusion 360 programming that were made to support the rotary. Also interested in how you made the tabs (what tool was used etc).
I just use a new work coordinate for each orientation/position and enable the rotary axis in the post processor. It outputs the A-axis moves automatically. Regarding the tabs, I use a 1/32 x 2" 60? tooth carbide slit saw from johnson carbide and cut it in multiple radial depths of cuts from eaither side. I comp the tool to adjust tab thickness and ease of removal.
If you raise the vice platform to the centerline of the rotary axis, could vices be installed on both sides, like a tomb stone?
Yeah! Pierson workholding makes a 4-sided rotary vise similar to what you’re saying. I believe it’s called the roto vise.
9:06 Hello. there are containers for metal shavings with a throw-away function. have wheels. tap for draining the emulsion from the container. search will make your life easier. but these barrels are terrible.
Do you have a link to this magical product?
there are two options for clamping such parts. 1. these are soft vise jaws, just like on a lathe. did with a stepladder. 2. you make a collet that clamps the part on the depth, there is a step, and one step on the cams to insert the collet and the part into the cams of the cartridge
Great video, keep em coming :)
I'd like to order one, but a recent change in law makes that utility knife illegal in Australia.
I can’t imagine living somewhere that doesn’t allow you to own a sharp piece of metal.
@hallprecision I didn't pretend the law made any sense. Essentially, there are no shape edges allowed unless you are purchasing it (with a receipt) and taking it home or you are a chef on the way to work.
Man i really enjoyed this video and it pushed me over the edge to actually buy a talon for myself, keep making content like this and like inheritance machines makes and well keep watching.
do you work alone?
Not really. There’s always somebody at the shop to keep me company! Hoping to hire on a few guys in the near future though.
I just ordered one brother. At work we can’t have normal knives but we can have ones like you’re making. This is awesome and it’s small not like the huge box cutters.
You make everything look so easy Matt
What happened to real men doin manual machining?lol just kidding nice vid...I'm 36 been manually machining for 14 years....if its old n cuts steel, i run it on the daily
Hey, I’ve spent my fair share of time on manual machines lol. Grinding, lapping, milling, turning, etc.
@@hallprecision its a dying art
Loved the video! You definitely need to make more like that. Ciao, Marco.
sweet setup man
Hey guys! If you’re interested in picking up a Talon Utility Knife you can snag one here! Thanks for watching! www.hall-precision.com/product-page/talon-al
keep grinding videos !
bruhhh lmao use a stick, sticking your extremities in there for science is gonna cut down the amount of science you can do lol
Keep up the good work ♥️
why don't this video have views its a good video keep it up.
✨shiny✨
There's much faster ways to do that
Definitely! But for only 12 parts, this is just fine.
There's always that guy that can do it faster
Токарный станок есть для таких работ
Great shop.
Machine shop without a overhead crane? Mate do yourself a pleasure and get one haha
I would if we needed it regularily. Most of the stuff we do is very small. lol.
How did you find your work to start
You need a shop crane.
Very Nice Shop!
the table cable
Cool shop, subscribed to see more
What do you use the 3d printer for? I want to buy one myself, but need to justify it a little more.
Everything from prototyping, custom fixtures, and finished goods. They’re handy to have around!
11:35 i like the deterrence dispensed and other stickers

Mate, your shop looks REALLY clean 👍👍 Floors look like they are epoxy? I’ve subscribed, and I look forward to seeing this channel develop You might want to work on your camera technique though… made me dizzy 🤣🤣🤣 Regards Robert Sydney Australia
Sweet! I thought for sure you’d pick up an engine hoist. They’re big fun.
If I do, it'll be one of these. www.haascnc.com/haas-tooling/tooling_accessories/haas_shop_lift/06-0200.html?US&gclid=CjwKCAjwpuajBhBpEiwA_ZtfhWewWufOZy5IqVG_N1gVCCQKUvHPdjVgcoM5PtaQSgxteUwPxMxgdRoCEvAQAvD_BwE
