Acorn 180 Curved Stairlift Removal
This video shows just how easy it is for someone to remove this style lift.
Please keep in mind that I have ever touched a Stairlift and I was figuring this out as I went.

Super helpful, great time saving tips. Much appreciated.
I was just trying to figure out how to access the batteries. I think your video is gonna help. Thanks 👍
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Wouldn't have been able to do it without it! Good tips.
I cringe as I watch you walking in those thongs with tools and parts scattered in your walkway. Tripping hazard and unsafe footwear. You are an accident looking for a place to happen.
I took mine out in 3 pieces. The installer stripped out so many of the 5mm heads, that it would have taken hours to remove. I also manually ratcheted the chair off of the rails to make it easier to pick up and move.
Is there part 2 of it installed straight?
Awesome video! I'm about to remove mine tonight! Didn't think anyone would have a video to remove the lift. Thanks!
4:01 if only someone in Wimbledon would come and remove my brothers!
I'm attempting to remove a lift now - but absolutely NONE of the sections comes apart. They are wedged together so tightly that they will not come apart. Can't believe how easy you are able to separate them in this video. Just can't believe it. I'm about to get some dynamite.
trying to remove the legs so i can get a new carpet not sure what tools i need
Your the boss Sir! I'm about to start this job tomorrow and your are going to save me a lot of agrevation with surprises like set screws, putting the chair into a short section, etc. Thank you!
Rubbish stairlift, go for Stannah
Great video, thank you!
You dont need to remove all the rail in order to remove the carriage either the seat , if u only remove the charge point u can go to program mode (clear mem) then with the remote u can reprogram or get the carriage up or down ez, the remove the seat. Also when reprogramming is good to know what u doing if you set a higher speed in the helicals or the angle increases u can jammed one of the motors when tryng to sync with the other. watch your fingers this is no jokes
What size tool do I need to remove the set screws or whatever that is holding the pieces of railing together?
The set screws are 5mm allen heads
The chair usually comes on the first rail section at the bottom... Most convenient place to remove from
Did you use lithium or synthetic grease for maintenance?
Here is my Google Drive page with some info on installations and re programming the lift. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1isgnJ9HkhJVT1YL6o4f03ALz-NA7A6ov?usp=sharing
Excellent, thanks for the video, God bless you 🙏
Painful to watch!!
Just bought on of these used, the chair was removed from the rail. Any hints on how to get it mounted back onto the rail?
Hmm. Just bought a place with a 180 in place. Not needed now but aged 70 and with screwed lungs says best to hang on to it, so this vid has helped me understand what seems a logical approach and somehow i am going to get this up in the loft for if & when. Battery getting removed prior tho, methinks. (that should lose some of the Kg's) Thanks for this.
Can you please tell me the distance of the rail from the wall and the height of the rail from the stairs. ACRON is discusting that they do not supply an install manual for the 180.
7.5" wall to outside of rail. You're welcome AH
GREAT video, thank you!
One thing I did learn is that you need a socket wrench and allen hex head for the screws that hold the rails together...the L shaped Allen wrenches don't have enough leverage.
Yes, we found that too
What's involved with re-programming can you do that yourself or do you have to get someone in?
Thanks for such a detailed video. I would not have known about the set screw, and separating the joints was driving me nuts, today!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It was pretty much a trial and error on figuring out how to dismantle it but this was the first time I ever worked on a lift like this. It’s kind of crazy that they put the set screws in the place that they did but hopefully this video helps people realize how to dismantle the rails and not try to beat the crap out of them to get them to separate. I was able to Ship the entire unit to my fathers home in Hawaii and then reinstalled everything and the programming was a bit tricky but there are resources out there with detailed instructions how to reprogram the lift.
@@pumpbottlemisters Hitting the crap out of it is exactly what I was doing. The rubber mallet left no marks, but it also didn't budge it a millimetre. I dismantled it last night 9 (13 stairs) in under 2 hours. I left the chair on a section of rail for the new owner. Hooly dooly, that thing is HEAVY!
Glad you got it done. Dismantling is the easy part. Installation and programming is a whole new kind of headache. ;-)
@@pumpbottlemisters A headache for someone else!
How did you get the seat to come off the base of the seat? We're pulling like crazy, but it seems to be locked in.
I think he said that's the small plastic screw at 2:11 th-cam.com/video/K1Yt8kBZ-dI/w-d-xo.html. I'm doing this job tomorrow.
@@rottingrat That's it. I watched the video 5 times and didn't see it. Thanks.
Sorry for not replying earlier but yes there is a small plastic screw that needs to come out and then the seat can slide directly upward it took me a little while to figure that out as well
@@pumpbottlemisters When I pulled the seat up, the plastic around the top of the hole started to come up with it and caused the switch it was holding to pop out of its location. It began to crack the plastic. It could all be put back, but was close to being a bigger headache. I don't know why it stuck to the seat shaft, but it's something to look out for.
@@pumpbottlemisters I have a slightly different seat, probably just a different iteration of the same one you show. Mine swivels on the front corner, not a center post. It appears there's a plate across the top of the battery base unit with four bolts that hold it in place. I'm nearly done with my "uninstall" -- just waiting for my son to come over to steady the chair/rail piece while I take out the last 3 screws. I'd hate for the chair to crash through the upstairs railing and fall 10 feet to the foyer below. :( Thank you SO MUCH for this informative video! I did number all my pieces sequentially from bottom to top before I started disassembly, so it would be a little easier to reassemble, if needed.
Very good - I have to do the same to an Acorn 180 (mom passed away)...leaving it on a short rail has benefits to completely removing it off the rail I guess? I had to replace the batteries about 18 months ago and had to reprogram the start/stop points and speed - was a bit tricky but did it - don't understand why they don't use non-volatile memory for storing the data points.
Leave it on a short rail if you can at all. It was difficult to get it back on the rail. We found we had to loosen bolts on a round plate that holds a couple of rollers in order to get the rail through. Once it was through, we re-tightened them and it was fine. To get it back on the rail, we also had to reset the over speed brake which had triggered in the removal process. I have instructions for programming a T565 which is the model my 2018 chair should have, but mine won't enter the P1 mode when I hold down the three footrest safety switches. It just keeps blinking E1 when I do that. Did you learn any tricks or find good instructions?
I will look again for my programming instructions that I used. It was a bit confusing but I was ably to work thru them. It took me about 5 or 6 try’s to get the new programming to take. Then while I was back in CA the 2 new remotes arrived and I walked my 80 year old dad thru the process to delete the old remote and reprogram the 2 new remotes and the the frigging Acorn reverted back to its original programming. He went half the way down the stairs and then it started tilting like it was coming to a landing and he about fell off. Needless to say we had to reprogram the lift again and ever since then it has been working great.
@@steveselby2694 could you share your programming instructions? I recently got a used lift and think the first thing I need is new batteries then reprogramming
@@steveselby2694 I just googled "acorn 180 reprogramming" which led me to the same document that came with the batteries. I just kept trying but not sure what I was doing wrong - the instructions I got with the batteries were not 100% clear.
@@brianleung1105 try the links at this page. Just be careful because the website with the instructions will try to put a lot of crap on your computer. Don't accept anything but the instruction document. okprops.com/how-to-problem-solve-an-acorn-180-or-bison-80-stairlift/ To enter programing mode on the older version, you hold in all three safety switches on that footrest. On the newer version, you in the two safety switches that run from the seat to the footrest and the bottom switch on the footrest.
Great video. I really like the detailed captions below the video, and I liked that you showed the whole process when you were trying to remove the seat at the top and then deciding to go to the middle.
Excellent video. Very helpful. I will be doing this job tomorrow. Lots of tips, like the set screws that are not visible and the 3/4 inch nuts which have to be loosened before removing the Allen key bolts on the other side. I would have probably tried to run the chair off the rail but you mentioned the programming aspect. So will be removing with rail as you did. Thanks for posting,
I have one but its not holding the pressure in the bottle. I am not sure what is going on but it was working fine then just stopped working.
I bought one and it has no pressure!!
