I Spent YEARS Searching for the PERFECT Lightweight Lenses!
In this video, I show you what I started with and what my current camera and lens set up is. I explain why it works for me, for photographing pretty much anything from birds to landscapes to plates of food! I like to keep it simple with the right camera and lenses that are quality but not too expensive and MOST important for me, not too bulky and heavy! You know I hate tripods ... until the sun goes down anyway... 😂

Panboola Wetlands near Pambula Village on the Sapphire Coast of NSW is a wonderful (and easy!) place to go birding with over 84 hectares to explore and a wide variety of birds. You never know what will pop up there! I used a 'shooting through' technique in some of the photos to soften the images and give them an additional creative element. มุมมอง 715หลายเดือนก่อน
I love the photography lifestyle 😇 My days revolve around the sun, the moon and the stars, and I'm always planning my next trip or chance to get out there and see what I can see, even if it's just down the road to my local wetlands. It's totally addictive in the best way, and if you're thinking of giving it a go I say YES! GO FOR IT! Start with your phone if you have too. You won't regret it......

Nice vid... funny seeing you sit there with 'the elephant in the room' on your lap while you rattle on about the other glass. Interesting how people don't get the cost thing with the 150-400.... I still have (and sometimes use) the ZD 90-250 f/2.8 that came out with the original 4/3 system. That thing was 6k US on release in the mid-2000s, which is over 10 in today's money (the ZD 300 f/2.8 from 2004, which i also have, was 8k US in 2003 - 13k in today's money). These are both great lenses, each weighing 3.5kg, and bulletproof, but if you don't need the speed then the 150-400 is a brilliant replacement and a bargain given its quality and portability. Lkd&Subd - all the best from NZ.
😂 I cart that thing around like a baby 😆Love NZ I grew up in Auckland 👍 Still entertain thoughts of moving back

Amazing birding gear and nice capture for your birding photography
Wonderful photos. inspiring video
I am inspired to go out there and shoot more photos
Hello,yes....very true what you are saying and showing!! Greetings Gijs 😊😊
excellent Sonia. thanks. A Sydney guy by birth, I've spent most of my working life in Melbourne, and have visited lots of national parks in VIC, and photographed lots of birds here , from Gang Gang cockatoos to Cape Barren Geese. I look forward to retiring back in NSW and visiting some of these spots.
We have lots to offer just over the border! It's a great area for birding, I'm sure you'll love it 😊🦜
its the peace.... and the birds, of course.
The perfect mix in my book!
AMAZING❤
Love your videos. I was just there for the second time and got some amazing birds before heading onto Hattah NP.
Thank you 😊It's a really great spot, I had a bit of bad luck with strong winds I'd love to go go back again. Hattah is on my list too!
Wow incredible great shots
Thank you so much! They are a wonderful subject 😍
I currently have the 12-100 f4 so 24 mm equivalent on the wide end. I’ve been thinking that was enough for my landscape photography. Lately having second thoughts and wondering if the 7-14 mm is worth it. Reviews have said there is A LOT of lens flare. Is 24 mm wide enough??
Yes that can be a problem but I do love the super wide view for certain landscapes. I think it compliments the 12-100mm well, as sometimes it is toooo wide and you can lose too much detail. I find it excels as a astro and lightening lens or anywhere with a big big view. You can get those double rainbows in! I'm also looking at the 2.8 12 - 40mm Pro, which could potentially replace my 7-14 and the 12-100mm on trips. Any excuse for a new lens 😂
@@flyingparrotphotography I too have the 12-40 f2.8 on my list and it’s more affordable
@@frankstark3036 if you're in Australia it's on sale now at CameraPro for $1200... it's a good buy at that price, the reviews are very favourable. Probably a better choice than the 7-14 as the lens flare issue can be a bit annoying at certain times. Thinking about it, I do zoom into 12-14mm most times anyway...
I’m surprised you didn’t try the 300 mm f4 Pro lens equivalent to a 600 mm. It’s supposed to be super sharp like 150-400 and also performs very well with the 1.4 teleconverter. I too would prefer the 150-400 for the zoom capability but a light weight super sharp 600 mm f4 is or would have been an excellent stop gap in the meantime.
I very nearly did!! ...but I did want some zoom for a bit more flexibility. I've heard it's an excellent lens and if the 150-400 wasn't on the cards I would have got it. The lure of the latest and greatest got me 😂
Wow amazing birds, I haven't even seen many of them. Greetings from a Balinese 🇮🇩❤🐦
Thank you and hello! I had such a wonderful time in Bali as a first time visitor 🙏 The people were so lovely and the Balinese food was delicious! Looking forward to my next visit for more of your beautiful birds 😍🦜
I shoot with both Olympus and Panasonic. The Panasonic lenses work much better on the Panasonic bodies. The lens and body stabilization work "in concert" with each other. On zoom lenses, I don't mix brands. On wider lenses, it really doesn't matter at all.
Ahhh that explains a lot. I think my expectations were too high for that Panasonic lens 😂 It's still good for the price point.
Hi! Great job. When you refer to the 12-100mm do you me the 12-100mm f/4 Pro? I've been on the fence to purchase one to use on my hikes.
Yes that's the one. It's such a versatile lens. I've been really rough on it too, throwing it in bag without even the lens caps and I've dropped it twice and it's still going strong! I hope I didn't just jinx myself.... 😂
Love this lens. Great IQ. Stays on my camera for just about everything. Also have the 100-400 for wildlife. The 2 lenses cover FF equivalent of 24-800mm.
I always laugh when MFT shooters make inaccurate comparisons to FF… that 150-400 f4.5 on MFT give the same “look” as 300-800 f9 on FF which can be achieved with a 200-600 f5.6-6.3 lens + 1.4x / 2x teleconverter for 75% less cost and the same exact weight lol
Works for me! It's a fantastic lens. It's the overall package and the features of OM System I like, but as I said, it's a personal choice.
@@flyingparrotphotography that’s great, just weird nobody can ever manage to make the correct comparison… as if 300mm f4 on MFT is the same as 600mm f4 on FF 🤦♂️
@@rvpcqp I did say *roughly 😉 You have to consider that I'm comparing focal length as that's the primary consideration for a birding lens. Besides which, if I swapped all my MFT lenses for roughly FF equivs I would be packing a fair amount of excess weight and bulk in my sling bag! This is manageable for me and gives me the flexibility to carry enough kit for a wide range of circumstances. I guess that's the point I was making in the vid, not really comparing apples for apples....
@@peterosborne9802 no pun intended 😉😂
@@rvpcqp Field of view is pretty much the same, which is totally unsurprising. Aperture is a lens ratio thing... an f/4 is an f/4 is an f/4. Where there's a discernible difference is in DOF... that's where you are justified in thinking about a doubling, although it's not in any way exact. What this 'doubling' means in real life is that it assumes that everyone is standing the same distance from a subject - because that also affects DOF - and sometimes, depending on the environment, you'll get an advantage or a disadvantage at a specified distance, that may or may not be alterable (cliffs / rivers / room size), depending on whether you are shooting crop or FF. 'I always laugh' when FF shooters make the elementary mistake of not including all the real-world variables in their 'assessment', as well as failing to allow that all the disparagement they address at crop-sensors applies equally to FF when compared to medium format. All very silly.
Great tips. Watched a vid here on u-tube where a small mirror was used also for light & a backdrop. Pretty neat
Hey that's a great idea! Thanks for the tip I'll try that one out sometime 👍

Moved to Olympus with the release of OM-1 and really enjoy the system. Seeing the 150-400 showing up on the used market now in the US. My primary lens is the 300 f4 which is a brilliant Pro Lens, 12-100 and 100-400 along with several other Olympus and Panasonic lenses Yes I agree that the Olympus systems offers a lot of value and great optics.
I nearly bought the 300mm I've only heard good things about it!
Hi Sonia, thanks for the great video. I am retired and enjoy bird and wildlife photography as a hobby. I have the 150-400mm and it is a brilliant lens for all the reasons you outlined. It was ridiculously expensive - I paid $A9750 (DigiDirect had it on special) and I sold my motorbike to be able to afford it. But I am so glad I did. I have used it every day since I purchased it nearly a year ago. Before that my birding lens was the 300mm f4 pro. It is also an amazing lens and very sharp but the fixed focal length makes it less flexible than the 150-400mm. I also have the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters and my everyday kit now is the OM1 with the 150-400mm plus the 1.4 teleconverter. It weighs about 2.7kgs and I sling it over my shoulder using a Peak Design strap. It is very comfortable and I never have to worry about being fatigued while carrying it. I love the focal range I get, so I can easily capture everything from fairy wrens to black swans, depending on what I come across on my morning walks. I also have the 7-14mm which is great for astro and real estate photography (as well as rainbows). And I recently bought the 90mm macro which is an extraordinary lens. I haven’t made enough time yet to fully explore its capabilities.I have always been well satisfied with Olympus/OM gear, and I like their commitment to innovations like IBIS, live composite, pro capture, starry sky focus and the built in ND filters. Regarding travel tripods, I have had a Benro Travel Angel (C1691T) for over ten years and it is still going strong. It is compact, strong, stable, and opens up to a descent height.
👍🏾😎 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
Such a beautiful video, lovely thoughts. Totally agree, photography is a wonderful hobby, good for the soul.
Well I was pleasantly surprised to watch this video, have been following you for little while and always imagined your big camo lens must be a Canon or similar. I thought how strong you must be to hand hold it and get such great images of birds etc. I have used Nikon for years, love them but the big bird lenses kill my arms just too heavy fir walking far. Also tried Fuji for get closer but not all that happy with the auto focus for birds, though fun to use. Finally bit the bullet and bought used OM1, a 75-300,light and sharp, plus a Pany/Leica 100-400 which is sharp and am able to carry easily. I agree that M4/3 can give perfectly good images and due to it’s manageable size and weight one is eager to get out into nature and enjoy the hobby. Thank you for an interesting video, though I probably won’t buy that lovely big lens but good to know your thoughts. 👏
Not that fit unfortunately 😂 I think the OM range is a great starting out option and I have stuck with it through to professional use. I'm very happy with my set-up and have no reason to change at this stage.
So many beautiful birds and pictures of them, thanks for the video.
My, "Affordable" gear... then shows a lens that's worth 12K... yeah. That's really not affordable, mate but nice set of gear you have. I love photographing birds in my area and I also travel a bit around Australia too. I love wildlife photography and it's an amazing way to meditate and forget your worries and get your mind straight again. Anyway. I hope you have an amzing day. Cheers :)
Yeah...true, but it took me years to get there. The one I started birding with, the 40 -150, and still use for travel, is definitely affordable and it's a great lens!
Yes, as a product alone 12K is a lot of money and is a hefty investment. However, in the context of bird photography (probably one of the most expensive photographic genres) the 12K telephoto lens presents a significantly more affordable solution to it's full frame counterparts. Sonya makes this comparison in the video.
@@nathanwood1506shut up with the whataboutism. It's not affordable, period.
thanks for sharing your experiences with the Om system. The Olympus 150-400 is, like all other pro lenses from Olympos, a very good lens. I'm waiting patiently to see what Canon will offer me in November and at what price. If it is too high and the weight is too heavy for me, then I will seriously look at the Om system.
@@nathanwood1506 bird photography can be a very expensive hobby for sure...it is a lot of money but I get so much enjoyment out of it it's worth every cent.
Great advice. Than's from the UK...😁👍
Hello James! Thanks for watching 😊
Nice sharing. Thank you so much ❤❤ like 👍🏻 149
This was so thoughtful and beautifully put - thank you for sharing. Enjoy the journey.
Lovely fun video / great tips! I have been struggling to find fungi to shoot lately, your mushroom hat seems to have brought the good luck in finding subjects for this outing - I think I need one of those 😆
It was a very lucky run! I went back two weeks later and no where near as many. Always worth a look though...
Excellent video . Hope to see more 🙌
Thanks for watching! 👍 Lots more in the pipeline 📸
EXCELLENT! Another aspect to add to the list is foul weather! For example, a bald eagle with feathers messed up from high winds, a perched owl covered in snow, a calling blackbird with warm breath appearing as smoke in a cold morning, a duck with water beading on its head during a rain storm, etc.
Oh yes great point!! I shall add that one to a future video 😊
