🛼Santiago: skating ALAMEDA, the MAIN STREET of the city, to Estación Central #Chile #Santiago
I decided to take on Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, locally known as Alameda. It is the main street of the city of Santiago, Chile, and kilometers long. The traffic was hectic and I had to battle the city buses and a somewhat 'unique' bike lane. I ended up at the Central Station (Estación Central), which I explored inside and out.

I made my way from the city center past Universidad de Chile to Barrio San Diego. Street life got a bit grittier and more authentic, which I like! I ended up in Barrio Franklin, previously the site of a big slaughterhouse but now up and coming and attracting hipsters for its markets. Watch me being harassed by dogs too! Equipped with a pretty severe jetlag (I arrived only about 30 hours ago) I took on the streets of Santiago, Chile, by inline skates. I started in Sanhattan, Santiago's business district, and made my way along the Mapocho river. Along the way I did a scary bridge and explored the bohemian Barrio Bellavista district. And so the first of a long string of South America videos was published.

I explored Milano, Italy, by bike. Part 1 started with a quick visit to Duomo Square for a celebration of Republic Day. Right after that, I ventured into the suburbs to the north and visited Quarto Oggiaro, a rougher part of town. I serendipitously came across the site for the largest but one student campus of Italy.

      Hi, thanks for the comment. As I am trying to finetuning the channel (I am a newbee) I have been struggling with finding the right approach for background music. Early on, several folks told me to put in background music, so that is what I did. Bought myself a limited set of song licenses from Adobe. But I sometimes think music takes away from the authentic background street audio. Curious what your opinion would be. Is it the particular song that you don't like, or the fact that a short piece is looping, or the fact that there is even background music at all (I checked out your videos and they don't have any music at all it seems)?

    • @wheelsabroad
      @wheelsabroad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Ruby, the Strip is not hilly at all, although there is a slight gradual inclination from north to south (see the GPS output at 19.16 min in the video). But that should be no problem. The spikes you see in the GPS output are not hills but escalators and stairs that are sometimes the only means to cross an intersection. If you take the main road, take note of the traffic! If you are newer to skating, consider taking sidewalks only. Enjoy! Simply because this was Vegas with all its glamour/lights/sounds/etc, it was a unique experience and different from the other cities worldwide I have skated (which you can find on my channel too).

      Some parts in this video show rougher sides of the Cairo area, but every city has its own character and that makes every city unique. Part 3 of this bike trip (coming up next Sunday) will show some different parts of the city.

    Thanks for sharing. I am visiting Amsterdam from Seattle for a few days this summer with my family and I wanted to see what skating might be like there. I saw they have skate rental there which is great because I can not pack all my inline stuff. Seems like a great way to explore the city :)

      Amsterdam (in fact, the whole country) is packed with bike lanes, which in principle are also great for inline skating and exploring the city. Compared to US cities (I have lived there and also visited Seattle), the city is compact and bike-centric, not car-centric. Mind two things, though: 1) Bike lanes are often full and Amsterdam cyclists are assertive, including folks on fatbikes and the likes; 2) The tram rails and how to safely cross them :-) My Wheels@home folder on this channel has more videos on this. Enjoy Amsterdam by skates!

      People usually warn for the area surrounding USC, yes. From what I understand from people who worked at USC it isn't as bad as it used to be, though.
