    I’m going to guess this doesn’t apply to newer Malibus because they will already have the jumper or should have an extended harness. For those, the micro switch is to blame. Interesting to see in the TSB that this applies to the Volt too since my brother had that issue (wrecked it in 2022 tho’).

    For the 2018, the harness is not the issue. It's the actual switch in the shifter assembly. They need to design a better switch or design.

    I finally went to change this in my dad's Malibu and he already had the bypass wire in there. So I just swamped it out with what I had anyway and the message came up but then it went away a few seconds later. If it's still happening I guess the next step is to change the entire piece right?

    I just recently had the same issue on my 2019 Chevrolet Malibu LT with the shift to park. I took it to a Chevrolet Dealership and I was fortunate to get an extended warranty when I first purchased it a few years ago. They replaced the shifter assembly (control) part number #13534328 and installed an in-line jumper (harness) part number #84733196 free of charge. No more issues. Extended warranty makes a huge difference as well. Without the extended warranty, it would have cost me around $574.00 in parts and labor. Great video!

    Question on this fix...what is the harness doing, that fixes the problem? I have read the issue with the micro switch isn't the metal tab hitting the button, but that there is over voltage occuring killing the switches. Is this harness the voltage suppressor? I have read that you can change the micro switch with a new one but if you don't install "the voltage suppressor," it can do other damage.

    • @nathank4708

      My question the same. What does the "by-pass harness" do? I bent the switch tab didn't help. Grainger has a switch. But if the harness is a so called by-pass. Why could i just by-pass the switch?

      Yes, just clip the the metal sensor switch and soder the two wires together and put electrical tape around the end. It by passes the whole problem and is a free fix. Saw it on another youtube. It worked great for my 2018 Malibu hybrid. @@nathank4708

    Just installed this on our 2018 Malibu premium and it has worked. I saw some other videos out there that describe the problem being at the microswitch which I can believe given my past experience with similar switches on my Chevy truck. I don't know how reliable these things can be over the long term so it doesn't leave me with much confidence in their ability to last very long. As a precaution I bought 2 of the microswitches if this continues to be an issue. The microswitch is hard wired in with solder. Someone posted the part number for those microswitches (653-D2HW-BL221H) on another video. I did a Google search and found them quickly for sale on a few different websites for around $3. Thanks for posting the video it was very helpful.

  • @MrDmax19681

    By the way, the shifter handle has 2 plastic release tabs on the left and right to get the shifter handle off. Just pop them with a hook pick after you peel the faux leather boot all the way up and over the top of the handle knob. I saw some other vids of guys muscling it off, figured there must be an easier way.

      GM absolutely should be fixing this! I just spent half an hour on the phone with GM Customer Care asking why there isn't a recall for my Camaro because my dealer wants nearly $500 to fix it. She tried to tell me there is no manufacturing error and they have no way of knowing if it was my driving that caused the issue. What BS! How could this many drivers across several different GM models being causing the same issue with their driving habits?!

  • @captivethoughts1745
    @captivethoughts1745 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If this fix doesn't work for you and you cannot get your Volt to turn off, a new connector and wring harness are free as well the install at your nearest Chevy dealer (reference GM Service Bulletin 19-NA-206, dated February 2020). Let me stress that if you cannot get your car to turn off (Chevy Blazer, Malibu, Traverse, Volt, GMC Acadia), you 12 volt battery will run low and be killed if you don't get it to a dealer ASAP. The dealer will not give you a free battery ($200) plus battery test socked me for $234. So if you cannot get it to a dealer, disconnect the 12 volt battery in order to save it. If you get it to a dealer, disconnect the battery when you get there and alert the service department that you did so. GM will reimburse them for the installation of the harness and shifter, not the battery. That's on you. Just figure I'd give you a heads up.

    I started getting the same issue last month (just as the warranty ended) and it's getting worse. I saw other videos with other workarounds (fiddling with the shifter) and bending the metal plate that's supposed to press the switch to make it more likely. I'm worried about this happening right before Christmas. On top of that, I got a message from Onstar about the battery being low. I just had it in last month and they didn't say anything about the battery going. I may have to do this myself.

    Just performed the repair on a 2016 Malibu Hybrid. Struggled with getting the connector off the wiring harness - but my wife fashioned a 'hook' of galvanized wire which she then used with her smaller hands to depress the connector retainer. Not my favorite design. Seems to be fixed! And only about $13 for the part.
