Very true about him being a wrecking ball. And one could argue that Andile's actions are motivated by the need to impress other men (his dad, brother, male friends) and not because he is "in-love" with Zanele. Patriarchy forces men to police each other, constantly checking how they can one-up the other and measure their manhood against their "opponents". He uses his son as a trophy to indicate to other men that he is a man among them, gaining their favour. For instance, Andile would lord it over his brother's head that he sired a son first while his brother couldn't; that he is now their father's favourite. And Zanele finally having a child to love shines a light on the reasons behind why some people choose to have children in the first place. It's really fascinating when you break the movie down bit by bit.

@@bioskopandchampagne I'm not sure what other vloggers do about the mics or if they just use a iPhone on a tripod and the sound is that good. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find a set-up that works for you. Excellent point about Andile needing male validation and making choices in that light. I felt he was insecure and stood behind other people to project an identity he didn't actually have e.g. Jessica for the association to whiteness, respectability and money (clock that he went from a house to an apartment), Zanele to appear more traditional and culturally-grounded (it was authentic to her, Sbu, and his parents hence her birthday present was better received than the party itself). Zanele and Sbu were a strong match as they both loved the city life/village life split. I think Andile wrecked everything because Zanele was a resource to him; she wasn't a friend, she was a gap-filler for his shortcomings, even a placeholder for the duties his wife couldn't perform. I'm glad they didn't end up together.

Your insight adds way more nuance to the reasons behind Andile choosing Jessica over Zanele. And peep how he was the one buying all of the traditional trinkets to dress his wife in. It seemed as if he was working extra hard to make her blend into his family as much as he could. He is a user and I'm also happy that both women realised that and got the hell outta dodge (even though they are stuck with him through the children). You can also argue that just like Zanele, Jessica was a resource for him (apart from his proximity to whiteness and its privileges). He got the boy-child from Zanele and got Jessica's youth (he married and sired children with her all because he didn't want to be alone. HE WASTED HER TIME!) 😔

@@bioskopandchampagne It's my favourite so far because this was the movie I discussed in depth with my mum. She's a psychotherapist and called out Andile's many, many contradictions. One on hand, he wants his father's approval as an authentic Zulu man and the son to lead the family going forward. On the other hand, neither his kids nor his wife speak isiZulu properly, or understand the culture. He didn't marry Zanele because of her infertility and inability to give him an heir, but married and stopped having children with Jessica after two daughters. Note that when Zanele would distance herself, he'd pull her back in through emotional blackmail (the kids mainly). It's Jessica who pushed Zanele away for good, not Andile. He enjoyed the blurred lines because it benefited him, which is why he had the big tantrum when he saw her with a man who loved her. Then there's Jessica; when they would go out as a family, he was so disconnected and detached from it all. What's the point of making a family you won't participate in? A messsssssssss.

Gender shouldn't have played a factor in who the lead would be in each film. Production truly fumbled the ball on this one.

It's clear that Production was looking for people who would make good tv and not people looking for love. They clearly knew about Tyler's kids and never made a move to tell Ashley so she wouldn't be robbed of making an informed decision about either staying or leaving! That is diabolical behaviour and it indicates that production was salivating at the sh*t storm in the distance which would cause Ashley emotional turmoil and embarrassment on a global scale. She was a patsey in this case and she never asked for that! 😞

I don't think you watched my review at all! 😞 I never said the premise was a misrepresentation of reality, I pointed out that TP failed to write a story that is multi -layered and actually good! He failed at his job as the writer and didn't entertain ME to that effect. I respect that you love it but at least listen to what I had to say. And please stop doing the trauma recognizes trauma narrative (trauma bonding) because if the acting and writing were on par, I wouldn't have had a problem suspending my disbelief and feeling empathy for the characters. I shouldn't be doing all the emotional labour for the performers at all-that's not my job.

@bioskopandchampagne you're blaming tyler Perry and his writing when people are living what we saw on this show if not worse. This show I'm sure wasn't meant to do a clean sweep at awards series. It's a soap opera for mature audiences that exposes broken homes, how life can be hurtful without a stable family foundation, how people in power exploit the less fortunate, and the ruthlessness of those who have money and power. But again, if you haven't been through any of this then you can't relate.

I'm blaming the writing because I'm critiquing the show on that rubric. It's not a blame game, it's fact checking. I'm not in any way knocking the themes in the story.They are real issues and no one can erase that, least of all me. And again, if the acting were on par I wouldn't need to have lived through it or be a "mature audience" to empathize and relate with the characters. There are some soap operas that are really good but this isn't one of them. Just watch the first 10mins of the video and come back and tell me what you think.

​AGREED with everything you said. This is cinematic trash, meant to appeal 'only' to a very specific audience! There was NO character development & the story structure was non-existent! Bottom line Tyler has become inexcusably lazy! His last several project's prove that he's no longer even trying to deliver anything of quality nor substance to his very own community, just shameful! However, as long as there does remain that lone demographic... people who willingly accept the most negative stereotypes re: black people & so consistently! Maybe because they are the ones being represented here & never realizing this type of one dimensional entertainment is 'never' meant to be flattering!

PeriodT! That last part hits different considering how long this man has been writing black stories. He's dragging us back and is causing more harm than good and people continually buying into it while missing the point all together is wild work.

literally! I'm on the same boat as you: I haven't watched his work in so long and can't explain to you why I thought that this show would be different. but it wasn't. it was SO bad, laughably bad. writing was terrible, plot line fell through, acting was horrendous but they did what they could with the script provided. I had to see it through and it was not worth it at all, especially considering the finale. but my oh MY, does he know how to cast em. the men were gorgeous!!!!! if there's no other reason to watch his work, it's for sure the beautiful eye candy of men that he casts. my sanity is gone but my lust was satiated. TP going to hell in a hand basket 😹
