I had the great privilege of reading the pages of Senlac as Julian wrote them. I will swear to you that any reader who wants to dive into the Game of Thrones world ... of actual history, brought to life by this world-class writer ... will want to do only one thing once you start the book: Turn the pages. One, then another, and another. That's what happened to me. That's what will happen to you. CMc

For history buffs interested in the 1066 Norman invasion of England, this fiction, based on facts, will keep you riveted from beginning to end. For readers like myself who are not familiar with this particular page in history, you are in for a treat. This was one wild and crazy time period. My compliments to Julian de la Motte for his extensive research and his ability to flesh out the players in such fascinating detail. The story-telling is engaging, and the writing style is crisp and unique. Bravo!

Excellent discussion by an inquisitive mind….makes me want to read his work. I worked for Stephen King, and there was never a time that I was with him that he was not reading a book… And every book that I had with me, which was always… He had read. As a wanna be writer… I feel a kinship and encouragement when I run into such like-minded people like Roger.

Nice to listen in on your conversation. Seeing the dead girl in the red coat is the point where Schindler goes from worrying about himself ("It's dangerous to ME!") and decides to put everything on the line. To be even-handed, his empire was about to become worthless with the fall of Germany. He also had been a NSDAP member since 1939 immediately after Germany annexed his native Czechoslovakia (prior to that he had been a member of the Czech pro-Nazi party and worked as a spy for the German intelligence service smoothing the way for the Nazi takeover - a role he repeated prior to the invasion of Poland). He was more than simply a war profiteer. The arc of his going from that to doing what he could to rescue Jews is the exception (even for unideological non-Nazis). The film certainly simplifies that, though doesn't completely ignore the equivocal bits. The vast majority of Jews didn't perish in camps, but rather were rounded up in rural areas and executed (Timothy Snyder's book _Bloodlands_ does a good job of detailing this, and Christopher Browning's _Ordinary_ _Men_ investigates how easily it was for everyday Germans to transition to merciless killers). German Jews had a better chance of surviving than those in other conquered areas (some were sheltered by non-Jewish relatives, some were hidden as an anti-Nazi political statement, even those in German camps had a better chance). Americans should also never forget the role too many in our country played in promoting antisemitism, and racism in general, worldwide prior to Hitler's rise (antisemite Henry Ford is even praised in _Mein_ _Kampf_ and remained a hero in Adolf's eyes), and that U.S. major corporations profited from making the Holocaust even deadlier by playing on both sides of the fence for profit. Kubrick's criticism is valid, IMO, but Spielberg did superb work in personalizing the reality of the Holocaust rather than taking on the more difficult (perhaps impossible) task of putting out a broader film.

Dee's criticism of my novel is fair, but I felt descriptive detail was necessary for such a largely forgotten people from a little-known era. I get that it's not breezy reading and often challenges the reader to learn. Especially appreciated is her noting the philosophical themes I wove through the action and adventure. Thanks! (Note my front cover now has this blurb from a world-famous HIttitologist: “In this well written, absorbing novel, Nixon has combined thoroughly researched fact with highly evocative fiction to produce a gripping story set within the context of the collapse of civilizations at the end of the Bronze Age.” -Trevor Bryce, Hittitologist & Ancient Near East Historian
