The Irresistible, Holy Grail Critter of Lembeh ~ the Hairy Octopus!
How incredible are the dive guides in Lembeh (particularly at NAD Lembeh)? Well, our dive guide found THE Holy Grail critter - the "Hairy Octopus". I didn't even know this thing existed, so it definitely wasn't on my radar, but oh boy this tiny, pygmy sized dynamite package was a super special treat! It's smaller than a ping-pong ball and was first discovered in the early 2000's so it is still too new that it doesn't even have a scientific name yet! At the end of the video, you can see how well it blends into the rubble bottom and looks just like the filamentous algae patches, no wonder it is so hard to spot.

South Kona - Ho'okena Sand Box - Good Day for Nudibranchs and Sea Slugs!
มุมมอง 6521 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is a quick little mash up of a morning dive I spent at Ho'okena Beach in South Kona. It was a very productive day out over the sand patch and saw the following species: Melibe megaceras ("Goober") Costasiella formicaria ("Black Sheep") Philinopsis speciosa (Blue-margin headshield slug) Siphopteron quadrispinosum ("Rubber-ducky") Stylocheilus striatus (Lined sea hare) Gymnodoris sp. #11 Cos...
Blackwater Diving for the Diel Vertical Migration ~ Pelagic Magic, Kona 2024
มุมมอง 20614 วันที่ผ่านมา
Blackwater diving is essentially "throwing divers off a boat in the dark of night in open ocean waters that are, for all practical purposes, bottomless." Sounds like fun, eh!? So, after the sunset, we ventured 5 miles offshore of Kona to water that was 5,000-7,500 feet deep and drifted aimlessly around to witness the largest animal migration on the planet that occurs every night! This is known ...
Muck Diving the Murky Waters of Kawaihae, Hawaii for Macro Critters

In my perpetual quest for finding unusual, exotic or new critters, I decided to jump into the murkiest and muckiest area of Kawaihae I could find. And it paid off! The Bermudella pellucida sea slug (nudibranch) species we found was another new sighting for Big Island and the Phyllodesmium poindimiei species was new to us. This site definitely had a strong creepy and eerie feel to it, but there ...
The Mimic Octopus ~ imitating lionfish & sea snake + swimming like a flatfish! Sulawesi, Indonesia

Back diving off Lembeh Island in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, our dive guide found several mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) for us. These cephalopods are known to "mimic" or impersonate other animals to either evade predators or being stealthy while hunting for prey. In addition to color changing via chromatophores, the mimic octopus can also change its shape and position its arms to resemble...

Not A Typical Hawaii Dive! Seahorse Comes Out of the Murky Waters

Always on the quest for nudibranchs and other joyful sea creatures, my buddy and I jumped in some extra murky waters to see what treasures we could find. Venturing offshore into the deep blue waters off the Kona Coast of Hawaii, we spotted a pod of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Yes, the dolphins still play the leaf game, where they "pick up" a leaf that is floating in the water with their pectoral fin and carry it around. When they are done, they pass it along to another dol-friend. Amazing to watch them!

Planning on doing this. I have a few questions: 1) I saw you guys trapped some prawns, did you bring the prawn trap, or was it already there? And how did it taste like? 2) I am assuming nobody goes there often as it is remote, were you the only ones camping when you stayed? 3) Did it rain at all when you were there? I saw you had a tarp over your hammock. 4) Mosquitos at night? Can you make your bon fire?

Aloha, I actually did another backpacking trip in April 2024 to Waimanu Valley. So here is the up to date info. 1. the prawn trip used to be there, but I did not see it last month, I'd bring your own just in case. 2. Last month there were 4 others on our first night, and then a large group (~10 people) up on a Saturday night. If you want the place to yourself go mid-week. Yes, its the windward side of the island, always plan for rain! Mosquitos are not a problem at the campsite, but are prevalent at the drinking water source waterfall. Yes, each campsite has a campfire area. You need a permit to camp and figure out logistics of how to get down into Waipio Valley. Good luck, happy trails!
