really enjoyed the video! thanks for the tip about how its easier to put in the axles before painting.
this is some great information thank you for sharing!
Glad you liked it so much! Look out for new video coming soon 😁👀
not balanced... front wheels higher thab rear...
If you can make a pinewood derby car, you can make this stand. :)
when i raced very fast drag slotcars i found low weight oil faster that graphite not to say that graphite is not good but it needs a lot of upkeep
Pwd oil is definitely faster than graphite. However, some races prohibit oil as a lubricant for some reason.
Great video!!! Thank you…Question…How deep do you place the nail/axles??? What kind of spacing do you have ideally between the body and inside of the wheel?? What technique do you use to finish/polish the aspect of the body potentially in contact WITH the wheel???? Thank You
Joel what is the purpose of putting pledge on with the graphite? I always put it on the axle and let it dry. when I did it your way the graphite hardened up in to graphite mud chunks in the wheel.
The pledge on the q-tip and pipe cleaner is just to hold the graphite onto its surface for burnishing the hub and bore better.
It’s obvious there’s many misconceptions in these comments. Which graphite to use. No one sells a graphite better than Joel’s Max-Lube period. If a PineWoodDerby expert tells you there’s no difference in graphite then I would wonder about anything else he says. When our boys we’re building their cars I bought every tube of graphite I could find and I built a powdered machine that tested how long a wheel would run with dozens & dozens of different brands of graphite. A lot of graphite no doubt comes from the same mfg just a different label. But there is a difference. One that you NEVER should use is the 50/50 combo of Graphite & Moly. It’s the best way to lose the race. Don’t worry about the particle size. If you want to compare get a tube of Joel’s Max-Lube squirt a little on a piece of paper. Take any other graphite and put a squirt next to it and behold you immediately see a vast difference. On my machine no other graphite has made a wheel run longer. A big plus is the container Joel puts his graphite in. It’s designed for application on a PWD car. Another big plus he doesn’t hold you up. I would love to know how he found or developed this product. There’s more! Pledge is NOT a lubricant. It’s Not an oil. If you don’t follow Joel’s directions and saturate the pipe cleaner you WILL have problems. Our 3 boys & 3 grandboys have never raced in a district that prohibited polishing the bore. Pledge is a polish just ask your wife. It’s possible some districts have made such a rule and as Tom Hanks would say “that’s Stupid”. It’s just my opinion but a rule should never be made that can’t be enforced. Before we leave the graphite one thing not obvious, I wasted alot of money trying to find a pipe cleaner that was good for polishing the bore. Again Joel has just what you need. One small package is enough for several cars. Joel does not sell a pipe cleaner he sells a borer polisher. For my credentials and maybe bragging our family’s 6 kids have won practically all of the den races, most of the pack races and first or second in many district races. During that time we have purchased 90% of our supplies from Maximum Velocity. A great company made even better when Joel took over. Customer service is great . we’ve had very few problems and he’s always bent over backwards to make things right. One last thing, we have always had a rule it’s a father/son project 50/50. The benefits are great. Sorry, One more, I have not been paid for these comments they are all mine. Joel sells products that will help your car win. We know and wish him the Best. Ron
If the pledge also transfers to the wheel bore, doesn't that mean you're car is now illegal since it has an oil or liquid lubricant? How can you be sure the pledge doesn't transfer to the wheel?
Pledge is a polish not a lubricant and it also wouldn't be wet once you wipe it off.
This is a neat idea, and I imagine it works really well. Thanks! However, I would note that for derbies that prohibit liquid lubricants, which is most, I believe, I would say it does violate the rules. Pledge is a polish/coating (as opposed if one were using water to help apply graphite, for example, which completely dries up).
If you spray pledge on your table and wipe it off does it stay wet forever? No it doesn't. Also, pledge is a polish not a lubricant. You can run a car on just pledge, but any speed will be short lived and you'll get smoked.
@@loud2nslol just because it dries doesn't mean it's not a liquid lubricant lol it's 100% a liquid lubricant in this situation
@michaelgillette6132 Is waxing your bores also illegal then according to your logic? That's a liquid at some point. Lol How about the graphite sprays that are out there? Still illegal? (Don't use spray graphite====slow!)
Dude. What is the point of zooming in and not showing an aerial view. Your videos need a lot of work.
Some videos are saying to make the cars ride on three wheels. We just went through the tech process and it's illegal to ride on three wheels. I'm curious why people are saying to do it
Different Cub Scout packs have different rules. Most require 4 wheels touching, however.
Sorry I don’t have those tools or knew I needed to buy them. Looking to install nail axels using everyday tools you have around the house.
That's why these videos are rubbish. They expect you to buy $75 worth of "specialty" tools for a kit that only costs $5. Takes all the fun out of building. The scout is supposed to build the car with the parent's help, but this is stuff only adults can do. I have yet to see a video demonstrating how to do this in a way that the scout can learn and do the building, or one that even shows a scout
Should I use pledge and graphite on axles that have been sanded and polished already? Or is that just for stock axles with no prep work already done?
Yes. The pledge and graphite will further reduce friction.
As far as I know scout pinewood derby prohibits the use of a liquid lubricant....
the axels are flat not pointed. so your video is no help. if we need to sharpen the end of the axel then you should say that
Thank you so much for this video! I am a single mom and nothing about this. I loved that I had these things on hand, nothing special I had to buy. Our cars were fast! The dads were impressed and asking what I did! Thank you!
I'm about to be in your boat, I'm so nervous lol
@@Love_life_always to polish the wheel on the cheep use whitening tooth paste and do the same thing he did in this vid for graphite. Next be sure to polish the axle up to 2000 or better 2500 grit sand paper. If your allowed his zink or nickel axles are a few dollars and well worth it vs standard scout axles. It will save you mass time as you can jump right to 2000 grit sand paper and polishing.
@@bt-xv1fy thanks. I watched quite a few youtube videos with my kid after doing a lot of googling and reading lol. He won every race. So I guess we did something right🤣 we did polish the wheels and axles and used maximum velocity graphite. He made sure to hammer the wheels in straight, so the first attempt alignment was great.
Great video!!!!
I just split the wood around the axle. Should have watched this first
Great video!! what if we don't have Pledge?
How fine is your graphite powder? 300 mesh?
Used graphite in 1970 to win the pinewood derby championship. Thanks to my dad sharing the secret
I like that concept but it looks kinda sloppy. Wonder if there's a way to make it a little cleaner
ive used all sorts of lube on my cars. personally i never had much luck with oils the best results i had was with Moebius 8000 fine clock oil. but ive used multiple brands of graphite finding hob e lube is the best dry wile believe it or not lemon pledge had the best results in my testing via full size track. ny oil II sucked ive personally never tried kyntox 100 due to the bad experience with oil even wile applying correctly via instructions. good video though! ive been retired for a few years but i might jump back in when this crap blows over with covid lol
Hey Joel, what about little divots either side of the body for finger holes in order to grip the car to get it out? Or is the foam weak enough to push your fingers down beside the sides on the body? I know we obviously don’t want to grab and pull the car out by the wheels either for obvious reasons. Nice video man. Helps a lot. Yeah... no fancy router here.
Do used jigaloo with this oil
Yep

you could but you can make your own with a few minutes of your time and some scraps from you parts bin...
Hi great video. Is there any way to make your wheel round if it's out of round? Thank you Sir.
Thanks Joel! Can i use "Favor" lemon furniture polish (made by Johnson Wax) instead of "Pledge"?
You can try any of it. I personally have only ever used the actual Pledge.
@@maximumvelocity6563 It seemed to work just fine. Wheels are spinning very well. Graphite is still as messy as I remembered.
there is a catch to using pledge be sure it sits and drys for at least a day if not 2 if its any kind of wet it will junk up like mud, once it drys you will be lucky if the car makes it across the line.

Who did you learn this trick from Joel ?
DirtyWorxInc man this is a good question. I believe that either you or Scott Law told me about Pledge on the axles. I have sense morphed it into what you see here. Hope you like it.
