How to Create Shadow Puppets Inspired by Kara Walker
This video is part of a series of videos focusing on artwork inspired by BAME artists. In this video I will look at the work of Kara Walker who creates huge paper silhouettes that tell stories and narratives based on the themes of race, slavery, gender.
In this video students will take the idea of silhouettes and use them to create their own characters by tracing images and cutting them out of black paper to create puppets. They can then use these puppets to create a story, scene or tableau for their teacher, family or friends.
This is a fantastic standalone art task, or an excellent extension task for literacy lessons. Students can write a dialogue, story or script. They can practice their oral presentation skills in a creative and fun way. They can create a story based on fact or fiction, from a story that they have enjoyed themselves and create their own interpretation or even just their own piece of creative writing.
There is an excellent interview article with Kara Walker on one of the pieces featured in this video. You can find it at this website; art21.org/read/kara-walker-the-melodrama-of-gone-with-the-wind/art21.org/read/kara-walker-the-melodrama-of-gone-with-the-wind/

Dear A, You have a pleasant way of speaking. You would be a born teacher, preferably an art teacher. I liked also David Hockney. A creative painter. Unfortunately, you no longer have it on the Chanel.
